Damien’s POV

Celeste smirked, dropping her fingers. “You were right about one thing though–I do deserve an incredible man. But that sure as hell isn’t you, Damien.”

Each word stabbed like hot knives, wounding my pride.

“That’s not fair, Celeste.” I said, my voice flaring. “I would have protected you just the same if I were closer. I always protect my woman.”

Ryan raised an eyebrow. “So when Vanessa was begging for help and you just stood aside while the police dragged her away, that was you protecting your woman? Wow, I need to take notes from you, Damien.”

Blatant sarcasm dripped from each word.

If we weren’t in the middle of a mall, surrounded by so many witnesses, I would have thrown a right hook at him. Showed this punk his place.

“I feel bad for Vanessa.” Celeste said, shaking her head, lips pursed. “She entrusted herself to the wrong man. You’re too selfish, too blinded by your own self-importance, to be a suitable partner.”

The revulsion in her eyes made my heart sink.

Celeste’s POVMy heart ached as I squeezed Bonnie closer. A million different scenarios had played out in my head and my body still trembled from the possibility of losing my daughter.I had never been more terrified in my entire life.“Let go of me!” Bonnie screamed suddenly. She recoiled from my touch like a startled animal. Like it burned.I loosened my grip to ask, “What’s wrong, hon—” But she shoved me away, tearing herself free from my embrace.“Stay away from me! I only want Daddy!” She screamed, lunging into Damien’s arms.My daughter buried her face against her father’s chest, sobbing like I’d hurt her.I stared blankly in shock as my heart twisted.Damien had lost her in a mall, and still she chose him over me. Who knows when he would have realized she was missing if I hadn’t asked about her? I pushed myself off the playground floor.“Honey, why don’t you want Mommy near you?” I asked as I walked towards them.Bonnie looked up from Damien’s chest, and her face twisted when

Third-Person POVDamien turned to look at the fitting room in shock. He was certain this was the one Bonnie had angrily stomped off into, and yet it was glaringly obvious she wasn’t there. Fear spiked his heart.“She must have run into a different cubicle–they all look the same.” He said, waving his hand with nonchalance as he moved onto the next one.Celeste watched him draw another curtain, then the next. His movements became more jerky and panicked with each empty room he unveiled.A surge of adrenaline and anger overrode the initial fear she felt.“How could you have lost our daughter?!” she screamed, her usual poise shattered by her mama-bear fury. Damien stepped back, bumping into an armchair. He’d never seen Celeste like this before. Murder gleamed in her eyes, her nostrils flared and her face was blotchy with rage.“What are you staring at me for? Find her!” Her voice cracked from the sheer ferocity of her yelling. “I swear to god, Damien, I’ll rip you apart if anything bad

Celeste’s POVI watched the police car drive off, Vanessa banging on the window, with a deep sense of satisfaction. That snake had been slippery, always evading the repercussions of her actions. But karma was catching up to her and justice had never tasted so sweet.“That’s enough, folks!” Grace said, loudly shooing away the thick band of onlookers. “It’s time to move along and enjoy your shopping.”They dispersed, chatting about the wild display they’d just seen. Gradually, the mall quietened down, and I felt like I could finally think again. I turned to Ryan, picking up his arm and inhaling sharply at the amount of blood that coated it.“It’s fine, Celeste, just a shallow cut.” He said, putting his arm down with a shrug.I glared at him and picked it back up. There was no way he was alright–his shirt sleeve was soaked bloody. “God, Ryan, look at this,” I tutted, my voice tight. “It could have been a serious injury. You were too reckless.”I released his arm to dig through my bag

Celeste’s POVThere wasn’t a chance in hell I was letting this queen of manipulation get away with this. I pulled out my phone and opened Vanessa’s Instagram. This snake had bitten her own tail.I stepped forward, my heels crunching on the broken glass. “Excuse me, officers.” I called over the chaotic crowd. “If I can have a moment of your time, I think we can clear up this situation right now.”The room quietened down as every eye turned to follow my approach to the police officers. I held my phone screen high and visible. On it, a video Vanessa had posted on IG last night played on a loop. She was at the gym doing pilates, twisting and stretching her body with such complex and wide-ranging movements.I increased the volume on my phone and Vanessa’s voice played through.“This next one is called the boomerang. It’s one of the most challenging pilates exercises there are.” She said with a smug laugh. “Although for me it’s a breeze, even in my second trimester.”I turned down the volu

Celeste’s POVNo one could tell me guardian angels didn’t exist.Mine rushed into the fitting room, grabbed my wrist to pull me out of the way of the vase hurtling towards my face. His tall frame shielded my body as he raised his left arm to block. The ear-splitting shatter of glass made my heart pound, followed by the screams of other customers.“Celeste, are you alright?” Ryan asked over his shoulder, his eyes darting across my body frantically. His arm was still raised, and I gasped at the scarlet stain that was quickly growing on his shirt’s sleeve. The vase must have broken against his forearm.“You’re hurt,” I cried out, rushing to assess his wound. But he suddenly wrenched me back behind him.Vanessa shrieked, searching for the next object to throw at my head. Finding nothing, she launched herself at me, trying to claw her way past Ryan.“Officers coming through! Clear the way!” loud, commanding voices sounded outside the fitting rooms. Vanessa’s eyes widened, and she pulled he
