Celeste’s POV

“Good luck, Vanessa.” I said, sidestepping her to leave the hospital. “You’re going to need it.”

She scrambled to block my path again, arms spread wide.

“Is that all you have to say?” She asked, huffing. “I’m pregnant with your ex husband’s child.”

“Am I supposed to congratulate you?” I asked, annoyed.

“Don’t be bitter, Celeste.” She tutted. “We’re old friends and you can’t say one nice thing?”

Poor girl didn’t know what she was in for.

“My deepest sympathies.” I gave her a plastic smile. “Now beat it. I have an actual future to get to.”

Her eyes narrowed. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Where’s Damien right now? At work?” I smirked, reveling in her karma. “You’re going to end up raising that baby on your own while he’s off philandering behind your back.”

Vanessa floundered, face reddening.

“Congratulations.” My voice dripped with sarcasm. “You wanted my life so badly–it’s all yours.”

“Damien would never do that to me.”

This woman was clueless.

“Oh, please.” I laughed

Ryan’s POVEverything that could go wrong, did.It was like Celeste made it her mission to make me late. By the time I was done repacking the storage room, I was a sweaty mess. Showering, forgetting the gift and then going back for it in traffic, and then the restaurant’s parking lot was full.I parked my car and sprinted half a block to the restaurant.“Ryan,” Michelle met me outside the entrance, eyes wide with worry. “I was afraid you wouldn’t come.”I caught my breath while her eyes darted to the door.“When my father makes a comment about you being late–and he will–mention the roadworks near his office. He despises the current city councillor. I think he’s planning on running in the next election.” I offered her my arm and a smile. “Thanks for the tip.”We walked into the restaurant like the perfect couple. The maitre d’ led us to our table without prompting and I used that time to calm my nerves.I’d become the perfect son-in-law for Celeste. “Mr. and Mrs. Hughes, it’s an honor

Celeste’s POVI touched up my makeup in my car’s vanity mirror, then tossed my lipstick into my purse where the bracelet Ryan had made for me glinted from the bottom. I glared at it and unbuckled my seatbelt.Tonight I dressed to kill.My driver’s door opened. “You look lovely, Celeste. Shall we?”“You’re such a gentleman.” I said with a smile. My date offered a hand, and I allowed them to help me out of my car.“I know how to treat a lady,” Grace said, then wriggled her eyebrows. “Maybe I’ll get lucky tonight, hm?”We laughed as we walked towards the restaurant, arm-in-arm. When the restaurant’s sign came into view—La Maison in neon white—my lips curled into a smirk.I’d sent Damien to a restaurant an hour out of town.“We have a reservation under ‘Celeste’.” I said to the maitre d’.My eyes scanned the restaurant as he led us to our table, searching for a glimpse of broad shoulders and wavy black hair. I was both eager and terrified that I had recalled which restaurant Michelle ment

Celeste’s POVI spent an hour crying behind my sunglasses and eating ice cream on a random park bench. Passersby gave me judgmental looks and a wide berth. But my heart was too torn up to give a damn.“I’m in love, Celeste.” Ryan’s pause built my hope only to crush it when he continued. “Michelle truly is the woman of my dreams.”But it was fine. By the time my ice cream finished and tears ran dry, I had reached an epiphany. Love just wasn’t in the cards for me.I dumped the empty ice cream tub in a trashcan and headed to a public restroom. When my sunglasses came off, I cringed at my reflection–I was a pathetic, slobbery mess. I took a deep breath and dug through my handbag for my makeup. It was time to become the indifferent boss I claimed to be.“Grace, Ryan, I brought lunch!” I called as I walked through the studio’s front door, calm and composed. “Let’s eat in the dining room!”I was placing plates on the table when they joined me.“One vegetarian burrito for Grace.” I said, han

Vanessa’s POVI didn’t look up when the interrogation room’s door opened and the detectives walked in. Instead, I kept my gaze trained on the table, shoulders slightly curved, and my expression a mix of pouty and afraid.Conner and I had perfected my innocent and demure look years ago.“Good afternoon, detectives.” Connor said as they settled down. “Are these handcuffs necessary? My client is in her second trimester–she won’t hurt anyone.”“Despite her pregnancy, your client has been assessed as a danger to herself and others,” the female detective said firmly. “The cuffs stay.”I rolled my eyes internally at the hardass. But it didn’t matter. The plan was always to focus my attention on her male colleague–my innocent act worked on men better, anyway.“I’m Detective Santiago, and this is my partner, Detective Perez. The alleged assault took place inside the fitting rooms, where the store does not keep security cameras for privacy reasons.” Before I could celebrate, she turned her lapt

Vanessa’s POVThe metal frame of the bed dug into my back through the pathetic excuse for a mattress. Time ticked by as I stared at the ceiling of my holding cell with unseeing eyes. My mind replayed the humiliation I’d endured over the last twenty-four hours in high definition.“Your lunch, m’lady.” Came a guard’s mocking announcement and the clanging metal.I gritted my teeth as my stomach twisted with hunger. The gruel they served here wasn’t fit for animals. I had shoved my untouched dinner back through the slot last night and requested a simple smoked salmon salad, but no matter how long I yelled, no one brought me anything.Eventually, a guard called me to the bars. I rushed there for my food, but she grabbed my shirt and pulled me close to hiss in my ear. I shuddered at the memory of her threat. “If you don’t shut your trap, I’ll switch off the cameras and make you eat your teeth, veneers and all.”I nodded quickly, and she shoved me away. When breakfast came, I attempted to ea

Ryan’s POVThe blood drained from my face.Maximilian wasn’t one to make idle threats. If he put his wealth and connections towards ruining Celeste, she’d face more than an online smear campaign–she’d never step into a studio again. Not even as a janitor.“Father, Celeste has done nothing wrong!” I said with indignation. “How could you threaten to destroy someone’s livelihood for your own gain?” He tutted. “Don’t make me out to be the villain, Ryan. You wanted control, and I gave it to you. Now make your decision.”Celeste had worked damn hard to get where she was today. I couldn’t let her lose it all because of me and still call myself a man.I had no choice.“I’ll dazzle Michelle’s parents for you under one condition.” I said, voice harsh as a blizzard. “You must make provisions in your exclusivity contract to allow Rosemary to go into business with Hughes Industries.”If I couldn’t stop my father from controlling my life, at least I’d fight for Celeste with the little power I had.
