Chapter 2

Author: Mohini
I thought about this before giving my answer. My eyes turned increasingly red as tears brimmed in my eyes while I watched Elaine share picture after picture of her wedding gown.

My mother was admitted to the ICU after my father cheated on her with Scott's mother. She suffered emotionally and mentally every day, and my father vowed to cut off all ties with the other woman and kick his illegitimate child out of the house.

Elaine blew on the spoonful of soup to cool it down before feeding it to me. "Your mother would want you to be happy, and I'll be right here by your side."

It was because of her words that I managed to get through this, but it was only now that I discovered that they were all honey-laced lies. I forced myself to pick up the pieces and tore up the NDA, and when I got home, my father slapped my face.

"How can you treat your younger brother this way when I brought you up to be better than this, Lucas?"

My father went through the chat history and showed me the text that 'I' had sent to Scott.

[If your mother is an adulteress, what would that make you?]

I had no idea how to react as I pondered the absurdity of this. My tone remained calm, "That text wasn't from me. Besides, is there anything wrong with what the text said?"

"Shut up!" My father stopped me angrily.

Elaine frowned. "Scott has never asked anything of me. He would have continued to hide himself away if not for our son. How can you bear to treat your brother this way?"

My childhood friend, who came over with me, chimed in, "Scott helped me out of trouble before. If you dare say anything against him, it will be the end of our friendship."

"If you dare touch a hair on him, I will cut ties with you as my son and will no longer care about your mother," my father threatened.

These were the people I had trusted the most, and they had chosen to take Scott's side while treating me as some sort of monster out for revenge. Scott's eyes had become red and swollen from crying.

"I've never asked for anything in return, Lucas. If you really hate me, feel free to yell at me or hit me. Just don't call me an adulterer. Elaine and I are legally married, and if you are willing to come, I'd like to invite you to our wedding."

Scott handed me a wedding invitation with a photo of him in a limited-edition suit that Elaine had searched many places to find. I remembered how her eyes lit up when she saw the suit. "This should be the wedding suit for when we get married."

It turned out, the 'we' she was referring to was not Elaine and me.

I was about to reject the invitation when Elaine gave me a warning look. "This is just a ceremony. If you attend the wedding, the rumors about Scott being an adulterer will be proven wrong. I've arranged for a family photo shoot tomorrow. You should come."

My eyes fell on the family photo hanging in the middle of the living room. My father was wearing a groom's suit, and his arms were around the mistress who had broken my mother's heart all those years ago. Elaine's head was leaning against Scott's shoulder as she smiled happily.

While they were taking that family photo, my mother was lying in the ICU. It might have been even earlier that my mother and I had become pathetic outsiders to this family, believing us to be people who could be kept quiet or sent away with some money.

I stared at the wedding invitation in front of me, nearly choking from the bitterness in my throat. My voice sounded hoarse when I replied, "I won't attend the wedding. I don't want to be part of a drama where the woman falls for her boyfriend's brother."

"Lucas, y… You're still alive!" Elaine stared at me in disbelief while her hands started trembling.I looked at her coldly. "Yes, I am. Let's just pretend that we don't know each other."As I turned to leave, Elaine suddenly grabbed my hand, and she hugged me from behind. "I won't let you leave me again, Lucas! I won't!"Elaine's body stuck close to mine, and I could feel her trembling. However, it only made me more disgusted with her. "Let me go!" I struggled out of her arms. "You don't need to act as if you care about me. It'll only disgust me further."Her eyes widened as she took a step back. "Lucas, h… How can you say that about me? Do you know how happy I am to have finally found you? Please don't treat me this way."I sneered. "Why can't I treat you this way? You caused my mom's death and left me homeless! What right do you have to ask me to treat you as before?"The way my mother stopped breathing in front of me was forever etched into my memory. I could not forget how my

When I regained my consciousness, I felt like my body had just been driven over by a truck. The doctor was about to leave to inform my family when she saw me awake, but I grabbed her hand. "Please don't tell anyone outside that I'm awake. Can you help me call someone and get her to pick me up?"I told the doctor a phone number from memory and, after that, I closed my eyes tiredly. When I awoke next, I immediately saw a beautiful face in front of me. It was Eva James."Lucas…" Her gentle voice rang in my ears, and tears of sadness started falling from my eyes.I had no idea how long I had been crying when I finally released her arm from my hug and wiped away my tears. "Thank you." Eva wiped away a tear from the corner of my eye. It pained her to see me this way. "I'm sorry about what happened with your mother. I've taken care of her funeral, and all you need to do now is to rest well and not worry about anything."She had once proposed to me, but I was adamant about marrying Elain

A white cloth had been pulled over Lucas' mother's head as she laid quietly on the hospital bed. "H… How did this happen?" Elaine was stunned as she heard ringing in her ears, while Brian stumbled backward as his face turned pale. "Sarah… What happened…"That was when the doctor and nurse came in to take care of her body. "Condolences to the family. Ms. Lambert has just passed because her oxygen mask was pulled off her face. The patient died of suffocation."Brian fell to the floor right after hearing the truth. "How is this possible? This can't be possible!"Elaine helped him up from the floor and remembered what Lucas said. Lucas had said with a numbed look on his face, "He killed my mom."She had not believed him then, as she thought Lucas was just trying to gain some pity by lying, but now it looked like he was telling the truth. Elaine quickly called Lucas, and she heard his phone ringing from the hospital room's balcony.Elaine went to the balcony to pick up the phone fro

The entire world seemed to go silent around Elaine as her heart skipped a bit. The crowd seemed to be heading in a direction in panic as the police started to secure the area. A broken body could be seen in a pool of blood from a distance. "Could it be…"Elaine wanted to take a look at the situation, but Brian, Lucas and Scott's father, called out to her, "Elaine, let's head upstairs quickly. We shouldn't poke our noses into someone else's business."She quickly followed behind after agreeing.Elaine kept refreshing her phone, but did not receive any text from Lucas begging for forgiveness. She did not understand why Lucas would refuse to apologize and just tolerate the situation for her sake. He did not even say “I'm sorry” to her. When they got out of the elevator, Scott and his mother came up to them. Scott was sobbing so much that he could hardly breathe as he held Elaine in his arms. "My face hurts so bad, Elaine. It feels like it’s been torn apart…""All right, all right. Lu

I could hear alarms go off in my brain. "Mom, I would never…"Before I could finish my sentence, the crying on the other side suddenly stopped. What a joke.][How shameless can he be to go after a woman he knew was legally married?]I rushed to the hospital in a fluster, only to be slapped on the face by my mother. "Lucas!" Elaine ran after me after I turned to leave. "If you continue to be stubborn, I'll make sure you'll regret this!" However, I did not look back at her. When I returned to work as normal the next day, my manager stopped me outside the door. "The CEO has informed us that you're not allowed to continue working here. Collect your salary from last month and leave."The thought of my mother's endless medical bills made me speak out louder than usual, "On what grounds are you firing me? I can take you to court for violating labor laws!"My manager sneered. "Mr. Jones, your father specifically asked our CEO for the favor. There is no point retaliating when you know it would come to nothing. You should save your breath."With that, he threw a wad of cash at me and left me standing outside the door.I suddenly had a bad feeling and immediately checked my bank account. My father had frozen all my accounts, and when I stumbled home in a state of shock, the movers were flinging every
