Oh Holy Night

"Holly! I'm back!" Sapphire called as she stepped into the house.

There was no response other than the sound of Christmas music, and the smell of homemade treats.

Sapphire poked her head in the kitchen, the table was covered in trays of mince pies, gingerbread men, Christmas pudding, and Holly was in the middle of taking bunloaves out of the oven.

"Hi Saph," Holly greeted as she put the fruit loaves on the side and took off her oven mitts.

It always amazed Sapphire how Holly could bake so much in just a few hours. She used to think Holly used magic, but the blonde insisted she didn't.

"Did you remember the icing?" Holly asked, hands on hips as she surveyed her hard work.

"Of course." Sapphire said, holding up her bag. "I wouldn't forget the only thing you let me do."

Every year she'd come home to find Holly having finished all the baking, they agreed Sapphire would get to do the decorating, though their mother hadn't approved since Sapphire didn't leave the table until everything was done, with them having school the next day, and Christmas being so close...

Holly grabbed a bowl and watched her sister tip a bag full of Haribo, Licorice, and Pick 'n' Mix in, along with an assortment of different colored icing, Sapphire wasted no time grabbing the white icing and a small bag of sweets and getting to work.

Holly put the bowl on the neighboring chair and went to get her coat.

"I'm going out for a bit." Holly announced, she'd clean up when she got back.

"Oh! They've got the tree and lights up." Sapphire called as Holly opened the door, letting in a gust of icy cold night air.

Holly brightened despite the cold and quickly left, almost forgetting to shut the door, much to Sapphire's amusement.

--------

Holly practically ran down the street, it was no secret she loved seeing the Christmas lights, as she approached she heard a small group of carollers singing, Holly hummed along as she passed, dropping some money as she did.

The town had been transformed as gold lights gave the place a soft glow, and small silver trees hung high on lamp posts, and in the centre of town stood a tree as tall as the surrounding buildings.

Holly pushed open the door to her favourite shop, the bell tinkling as she did.

"Oh, hello Holly, getting ready for Christmas?" a lady who worked there asked, stepping around the work bench that doubled as a till, which was covered in different kinds of cloth.

"Yeah," Holly walked around, looking at all the materials, she grabbed a roll of gold and put it on the work bench. "I'm making a dress," Holly explained, adding some blue as well.

"For your energetic friend, right?" the woman asked, cutting the cloth.

"Melanie," Holly paused. "Do you have anything water proof?"

The woman nodded over to a whole rainbow she somehow missed.

"The girl she's always with, they live together now, right?" the lady asked.

Holly nodded.

"And these," she added, dropping a pack of buttons next to the red fabric.

"Here we are," the shop keeper said, handing Holly a bag and taking her money.

"See you soon." Holly said, waving as she left the shop.

She breathed into her gloved hands, 'It's so cold,' she thought before going to another store.
