“This isn’t too much, right?” Nora muttered, staring at her reflection for the third time that evening.

Her dress was a show-stopper: a black, high-necked, sleeveless gown that hugged her curves like it was made for her. Silver crystals and tiny stones glittered down one side, where a slit ran high up her thigh.

Her long, dyed red ombré hair flowed past her waist. The matching stilettos caught the light, her diamond necklace glowed, and for a moment she looked like she belonged on a runway instead of at a corporate party.

“But what if it’s too much... for him?” she whispered, lips pressing together.

Max Jordan. She pictured him like always: a little clumsy, casual, and grinning too wide. This wasn’t just overdressed; it was overkill.

What if he showed up in sneakers and a hoodie?

Groaning, she reached for her phone to ask what he was wearing when it buzzed with an incoming call. The nosy doctor.

Perfect timing.

“Hi, Faith.”

“Nora!” Dr. Faith’s cheerful voice rang out. “I just s

ϖϖϖϖϖϖSome stories don’t start clean. They start right in the middle of a mess… like now, with a phone call she wished she hadn’t made.‘Great. Now you’ve pissed him off, Nora thought bitterly.Nora heard the change in Max’s voice, and for a moment, she considered lying, telling him something convenient, anything but the truth. But she couldn’t do that to him. He has been nothing but a sweetheart since he became her assistant. She groaned softly. “No, Max, I didn’t find someone else. I wasn’t exactly thinking straight when I asked that of you. I was upset and trying to prove a point that didn’t need proving.”She paused, chewing on her bottom lip before continuing.“I just feel horrible, Max. Dragging you into my mess? It’s not fair. So I think it’s better if…”“Did I complain?” he asked, interrupting her mid-sentence.She blinked. “Ah! Of course not, but…”“Then don’t worry about me. If I didn’t want to go, I’d have said so. I’m not a pushover, you know.”Her lips parted. “I never s

ϖϖϖϖϖϖAva Marshal didn’t return to her office. Why waste time on reports when there were far more important games to play? Her stiletto heels clicked against marble as she walked out of Noah’s office, still smirking.Let Nora sulk. Ava had bigger plans. She speed-dialed Celine, and the sultry voice answered after one ring.“Miss Marshal, it’s been too long,” the boutique owner cooed.“I need something showstopping.” Ava purred, stepping into the elevator. “I’m talking sinful silk, unapologetically short, and dangerous enough to get a man on his knees.”Celine laughed. “Ah, so we’re making someone jealous?”“Not someone, darling,” Ava whispered at her own reflection in the mirrored elevator wall. “Her.”“You’re bad,” Celine giggled. “Come over. I’ll keep the red rack ready.”By the time Ava reached the boutique downtown, she was already picturing Nora’s face, that trembling jaw, the wide eyes, and the slow realization that Noah’s attention was never hers to keep.Ava swept into the bo

ϖϖϖϖϖϖThe silence was so loud it practically roared in Nora’s ears.Noah said nothing, just stared at her.No guilt, no regret. Just that cold, unreadable mask of hisLike he expected her to figure it out on her own. Like she should already know why the knife was in her back.“I’ll be going to the party with Miss Marshal,” he finally said. The words hit her harder than she expected. Her throat tightened.“Why?” She asked, her voice trembling. “If I remember right, members who aren’t part of a project cannot attend its launch. That rule was written and signed by you. So what the hell is this, Noah?”He opened his mouth, but before he could speak…“What do you think, sweetheart?” Ava cut in smoothly. “There’s been a change of plans, obviously.”Nora’s eyes snapped to her. “Really? And was this change approved by the board?”Ava smirked. “Why would the board care about something so small? It’s just a plus-one, not a merger.”Small.This demon had the audacity to call Nora’s work small.

ϖϖϖϖϖϖAva crossed one leg over the other, slow and deliberate, like she had all the time in the world. Her fingers tapped lightly on the armrest; her eyes were fixed on the glass door. She’s coming. She didn’t need anyone to say it, she felt the energy shift the moment Nora stepped onto the floor. That quiet tempest she always carried… pretending not to feel.Let’s see how well she pretends today, Ava thought, lips curving into a slow, satisfied smile. She’s not going to like this. Not one bit.It wasn’t just seeing him that would bother her. it was the fact that Ava Marshal was sitting with him.And like clockwork, the door opened. Nora walked in.Ava smirked the moment she caught the annoyed look in Nora’s eyes. "You look more alive now," she said. "I thought you died."But Nora didn’t answer. She moved like Ava was furniture, something to step around, not acknowledge.Eyes locked on Noah, she asked coolly, “You sent for me?”It was the first time she’d seen him since coming back f

ϖϖϖϖϖϖMax Jordan sighed as he dragged himself back to his desk.He wasn’t a fool.Every time Noah Bamford’s name came up, Nora’s face changed like shifting skies. Sometimes it clouded with sadness, other times it softened into quiet longing. But just now… what he saw was different,Expectation. What was he missing? He told himself time and again that Nora and Noah were nothing more than boss and employee, maybe old friends. But something didn’t add up. The way she lit up at the thought of that man gnawed at him.Was he jealous?Hell yes.Max Jordan, the baby-face man. That was his nickname back home, half joke, half insult. Twenty-six, but he could easily pass for eighteen. At first, it was fun. While his friends chased gym bodies and adult problems, he got away with looking untouched by time. But the novelty faded. People didn’t take him seriously, not at work, not in life, and definitely not in relationship, a lot of people even wondered if he was gay. That was why he left home.He
