Chapter 4~ Chained to the Past

Just like Mira said—he was in a shitty mood.

Noah sat slouched on the sofa, ignoring the office secretary as she nervously read off his schedule.

He tapped his foot rapidly, like he was counting down to an explosion. His fingers drummed against his thigh—a habit he’d picked up after years of bottling shit up instead of just saying it out loud.

His jaw was clenched, brows drawn tight, and that signature scowl was glued to his face, the one he wore whenever the world refused to bend to his liking.

Nora walked in like nothing was wrong, not that she would no.

She didn’t spare him a glance as she crossed the room and took the seat farthest from him.

She’d long since learned not to fear Noah’s anger. His moods didn’t scare her anymore. If out all, they annoyed her—because she knew he could be more than this. He just chose not to be.

“You wanted to see me?” she asked coolly.

His eyes snapped up.

“Why’re you sitting so far away?” he asked, clearly irritated, like even her choice of seat offended him.

She bit the inside of her cheek, swallowing down the snark rising to her tongue. Instead, she offered a faint, polite smile. “I need fresh air,” she lied smoothly. “And this seat’s closest to the window.”

He didn’t buy it. She could tell.

Still frowning, he grabbed a thick stack of documents and dropped them on the coffee table—loudly.

“Fine. I need you to go through these.”

His tone was clipped. Rude.

She sighed—not out of exhaustion, but because of how familiar this whole dance had become.

“You wanna tell me what the hell’s wrong with you?” she asked, feigning mild curiosity. “You’ve been—”

“Enough!” he barked, cutting her off and slamming a palm against the stack. “Just go through the damn documents.”

Nora blinked, taken aback.

Seriously? He was this pissed because Mira kicked him out?

Mira was a married woman, for God sakes. What kind of man sulks over a married woman while the single one right in front of him loyal, patient—gets treated like disposable furniture?

In anger, Nora snatched the papers off the table.

“Do I look like your personal chew toy?” she asked, in a low voice.

Noah blinked—as if her words hit a nerve he hadn’t armored. “Huh?”

She jerked her chin toward the secretary still hovering awkwardly by the door. “That’s your office assistant. Not me.”

Then she stood, lifting her chin high, her stare unblinking. “But I’ll go through these papers, Sir. Not because you barked at me—because I’m doubling my salary this month.”

He sat up straighter, visibly thrown. “You’re joking, right?” he asked, “You can’t just demand—”

“I wasn’t hired to be your emotional punching bag, Mr. Bamford,” she cut in, harsher. “You might be the CEO, but I’m a boss in my own right too.”

He glanced at the door and gave the assistant a subtle nod. Once she slipped out, he turned back to Nora.

“You wanna tell me what the problem is?” he asked, quieter now. “Your voice is… unpleasantly harsh today.”

Harsh? She almost laughed. The nerve of this son of a bitch.

“Really?” she said, flashing a brittle smile. “Because I’m using the same tone you’ve been dishing out since I walked in.”

He slumped back into the couch, dragging a hand through his hair. “You got a call from Mira, didn’t you?”

Not a call per se.

Nora tilted her head, playing dumb.

“And why would I get a call from Mira?”

His expression changed, part frustration, part defeat.

“You don’t have to lie. I know you two still keep in touch.”

Nora stared at him.

She was confused, frustrated, and dangerously close to losing the last sliver of control she had left over whatever the hell this was between them.

How long was she supposed to stay quiet while he chased ghosts?

While she stood here unseen, unwanted but still hopelessly drawn to him?

“How long are you going to keep torturing yourself over Mira, Noah?” Her voice trembled. “She’s married. As if that’s not enough, she’s having a baby, for crying out loud.”

“So what?” he shot back, unapologetic. “She was mine first—before that asshole stole her. Just because she’s married doesn’t mean I love her any less.” He said shamelessly.

He thought he was being honest.

She thought he was being selfish.

Neither of them realized just how far apart their definitions of love had drifted.

“I thought someone who’s experienced loss would understand what I’m feeling,” he added bitterly.

Nora froze.

He didn’t just say that.

He didn’t just compare this—his pathetic obsession with Mira—to that… to her burying her entire family.

“I see,” she said at last, her voice flat, stripped of any emotion.

Noah’s eyes widened, ah, he made a mistake. “Nora, wait. That’s not what I meant—”

“I’m sorry to disappoint you, Mr. Bamford,” she cut in abruptly, tears brimming but refusing to fall. “But not everyone’s stuck in the past like you are.”

And with that, she turned and walked out, slamming the door with a loud thud.

Noah exhaled slowly, dragging a tired hand down his face.

“Seriously, Noah…” he muttered under his breath, moving toward the window. “Did you really have to go that far?”

He stood there, staring at the door long after she was gone.

Finally, he pulled out his phone, his thumb hovering over her name.

“I’ll just apologize later,” he said softly, to no one at all.

In case you didn’t catch the Author’s Note… Before you step into this next scene, I want to let you know that what you’re about to read is not part of Nora and Noah’s main story. This is a sneak peek, a doorway into the next chapter of this universe, a story that has been demanding to be told even while this book was still unfolding. Ava and Max have always existed on the edges. Complicated. Messy. Too stubborn to love, too wounded to admit they want to. And yet… something between them has been simmering beneath every argument, every glare, every accidental moment they shared. This epilogue is where their story begins. I’m offering it here, freely, because I want you, the readers who walked every step with Nora and Noah, to experience the spark before deciding what comes next. If this world should continue… If Max and Ava’s chaos should evolve into a full book… If Uncontracted Desire: Twisted Affection deserves to be born… then your votes and your support will be the decid

  • Non~Contracted: The Heart Doesn't Need a Contract to Break   Author's Note

Dear Readers,If you made it to this point… thank you. Truly. I don’t take your time, your patience, or your heart for granted. Every comment, every moment you spent following Nora and Noah through their heartbreak, their healing, and their stubborn fight for a second chance ... all of it means the world to me.This story was never just about romance. It was about two people learning to breathe again after being torn apart. It was about forgiveness, the kind that feels impossible, the kind that feels unfair, the kind that still somehow finds its way back home.Writing this book was a joy. There were scenes that tore me open, scenes that healed something in me,. Nora and Noah have lived in my head for so long that letting them go, even a little, feels like saying goodbye to two friends I’ve grown up with. But the beauty of stories is that they never truly end. They leave doors open if you look closely. And that brings me to what comes next. This is not our final goodbye. Not yet.F

ϖϖϖϖϖNora stood still as the final pin was secured into her hair, her breath shallow, not from the nerves, but from the weight of how far she’d come to reach this moment. This wasn’t doubt; it was acknowledgement. She knew this woman in the mirror. She knew the quiet strength in her eyes, the softness earned through loss, and the stability that came from surviving what should’ve broken her.She was getting married again. Not because she needed saving. Not because she was afraid of being loved. But because she had chosen love… again… after grief had tried to teach her otherwise. After Nora had said the big yes, Noah hadn’t wasted a second. He swept her home, made love to her like his life depended on it, and honestly, in the middle of it, she begged for more.If it were possible to get her pregnant again, he would’ve done so without hesitation. Her fingers drifted to the ring on her hand, her chest tightening. ϖϖϖϖϖThe ride back was silent. Not the awkward kind... no fidgeting, no forced words. Just silence, weighed down by everything that had been said … and everything that hadn’t.Noah drove with one hand on the wheel, the other resting loosely on the gearshift. His eyes stayed on the road, but every so often, they drifted to Nora. Her head was leaning against the window, the city lights sliding across her face in fleeting reflections. She looked calm. Too calm. And he knew better than to believe that.He broke the silence first. “Are you okay?”She didn’t turn. “Define ‘okay.”A faint smile tugged at his mouth. “You were quiet back there. I half expected you to tear her apart.”“I wanted to,” she admitted softly. “But I couldn’t.”That made him glance at her again.“No matter how much I want to be with you,” she continued. “I didn’t want it to come at the cost of your mother.”Noah exhaled, tightening his grip on the wheel. “It wasn’t your fault. She made her choice.”“I know.” Her voic

ϖϖϖϖϖThree Months LaterThree months. That was how long it had been since Nora last stood in front of a mirror, holding her breath as the reality of her pregnancy took slowly settled into her bones. The woman staring back at her looked the same… reserved. But inside, she was a walking disaster. She should have been used to this. She had done motherhood before. Twice. And yet fear had a way of reinventing itself. No matter how familiar the road, the uncertainty never softened. It always found a new way to ache. She rested a hand on her still-flat stomach, fingers trembling just slightly.“We’re going to be okay… right?” she whispered. The clock on the wall ticked softly.5:30 p.m.It was time.Noah had arranged dinner with his mother… to talk things through. Which, translated bluntly, meant telling Rosa Bamford that the woman she despised most in the world was carrying her grandchild. And hoping… against all logic, that something in Rosa might change.Nora wasn’t naïve. She never expe

ϖϖϖϖϖ Ava blinked rapidly, her mouth opening before her brain could catch up. The words had slipped out… loud, careless, and damning. Shit. Her heart slammed against her ribs as she took a slow step back, silently praying she hadn’t said that out loud. But she did and they heard. Noah’s eyes narrowed like a loaded gun. Nora’s brows knit together, confusion replacing shock. She tilted her head slightly. “What do you mean … I got your baby? How exactly did I do that?” Ava forced a nervous laugh, waving a dismissive hand as if she could swat the moment away. “Nothing. I… I didn’t mean it like that.” “That didn’t sound like nothing.” Noah said coldly. She tried to move past him, but he was faster. Noah grabbed her arm and slammed the door shut. The sound echoed sharply through the room. “Now,” he snapped. “You’re going to talk. Before I lose what little patience I have left.” Damn mouth, Ava cursed inwardly. She exhaled slowly and looked anywhere but at them. “
