Chapter 3

Author: Redleaves
The slap landed. The auction hall went dead silent for a solid few seconds.

Damon's head was turned to the side, his jaw locked tight.

Serena shrieked. "Eileen! You actually dared to hit Damon?! Security—take her to the underground interrogation room!"

Two guards rushed forward and grabbed my arms from both sides.

I struggled. "Let go of me! You have no right to detain me!"

Serena laughed coldly. "This is the Vesper family's auction house. Of course I have the right."

"I'm warning you," I said, my voice ice-cold. "Don't make me call Lucien to come down here—"

Damon cut me off with a raised hand. "Enough. Apologize, and you can leave."

I locked my eyes on him. "Damon, I'm walking out of here with that brooch today. Tell them to let go."

Damon's gaze swept over the guards' hands on my arms, his brow twitching slightly.

"Eileen, I don't want to make things difficult for you. But you disrupted the auction first, and then you impersonated a Moretti Donna. You need to apologize."

"Don't believe me? Go ask Lucien yourself." I didn't back down an inch. "Or are you scared?"

Damon's eyes darkened. "Are you really set on blowing this up?"

"Get this straight, Damon." My voice dropped too. "You're the one blowing this up."

Damon froze for a second, his thin lips pressing into a tight line.

"Fine. You want it your way?" He turned to his men. "Handle it by the book."

I stared at his cold, sharp profile, and something hollow settled in my chest.

Memories came biting at my heels like a rabid dog.

Five years ago, on Thanksgiving, he'd insisted on bringing me to his family's dinner.

He said I was his family.

I remembered holding his hand under the table, thinking that was forever.

And now Damon stood right in front of me.

But he felt like a stranger I'd imagined.

The guards dragged me all the way down to the basement. I screamed for help, but everyone just watched—cold, distant, unmoved.

No one lifted a finger. Just like five years ago.

The underground interrogation room was deeper than I expected. Stuffy, damp, with a flickering white light overhead.

I was shoved into a metal chair, my wrists cuffed to the armrests.

Before long, a man in a gray suit walked over.

"I've reviewed the situation. You disrupted the bidding under the pretense of being a Moretti Donna," he said, eyes fixed on me. "Then, after failing asset verification, you assaulted Don Vesper."

"I didn't fail verification," I shot back. "They refused to provide a neutral notary."

"That's your version. Anyone to back that up?"

I thought of the crowd upstairs—all those dead-eyed sheep—and let out a cold laugh. "You can check the surveillance footage."

The man paused, then burst out laughing. "Surveillance? In an underground auction? You want to leave evidence for the cops?"

My stomach dropped.

He slid a document across the table in front of me.

"Look, you disrupted the auction, but Don Vesper is merciful. Sign this, and you're free to go."

I glanced at the paper.

It read, clearly printed:

I admit that I am unable to pay the bidding amount, voluntarily forfeit the emerald brooch, and will issue a public apology to Damon.

I stared at the black letters and let out a short laugh.

"What if I don't sign?"

The man raised an eyebrow.

"Then you stay here until you change your mind."

The words barely left his mouth before a bucket of ice water slammed into my face.

The cold soaked through me in an instant. My teeth chattered, but I didn't lower my head.

"Miss Eileen, we don't tolerate rule-breakers here."

The man leaned in, his mouth close to my ear. "Don't be so stubborn. Your reputation's already ruined anyway."

My pupils contracted. "What do you mean?"

"Exactly what I said." He handed me his phone. "Take a look."

The video of Serena humiliating me was already circulating on the dark web.

The headline burned—obscene and sickening.

[Crazy Woman Fakes Donna's Identity, Slapped in Public by the Real Donna]

The comments were nothing but curses.

They called me a desperate lunatic crawling back to Damon. A mentally unhinged freak.

"Let me go," I said, lifting my head to meet his cold stare. "I've already contacted Lucien. He'll be here any minute."

The man laughed like I'd just told the best joke of the year. He grabbed my face hard.

"Still running your mouth at this point?"

I bit down—hard—on the back of his hand.

He yelped and pulled back, then turned and grabbed a folding knife from the side.

The blade snapped out. The glint of steel sent a chill through my chest.

"I'm warning you—you can't afford—"

Before I could finish, he yanked my hair and forced my head down.

The cold blade pressed against my cheek.

My wrists were cuffed to the chair, my hair in his grip—I couldn't move an inch.

The tip traced slowly down my face. The icy touch made every muscle in my body lock tight.

I clenched my jaw and glared at him.

"If you touch me, the Moretti family will destroy you."

He sneered.

"Let's see if your so-called 'Don Moretti' can still recognize you once that pretty face of yours is carved up."

The blade was about to slice in—

Boom!

The interrogation room door burst open from the outside.

A tall figure stood in the doorway, backlit by the light.

My eyes burned red-hot in an instant. I couldn't help but call out:

"Lucien!"

  • Not His Donna, Not His Anything   Chapter 14

"Eileen, do you really think being a Donna means you can do whatever you want?"Serena's eyes locked onto me, her gaze venomous enough to draw blood."Let me tell you something—the Vesper family is no weaker than the Morettis. We don't accept any tribunal!"Damon's face was dark—almost black. He didn't respond to Serena. He just looked at me, like he'd finally made up his mind about something. The next second, he walked around the long table and stopped in front of me.Under the eyes of every family representative, the once-untouchable Don Vesper dropped to one knee before me."Eileen."His voice was raw—almost broken."I know 'sorry' won't bring your mother back. It won't erase what you went through.""I also know that the one who pushed you into the abyss wasn't really Serena or my father."He looked up, his eyes bloodshot."It was me.""I believed Serena's lies. I let my family corner you until you had nowhere left to go."He reached out, like he wanted to touch the hem of my dress—

The joint family tribunal was held at the Moretti estate.Every family on the East Coast sent representatives. At the head of the long table, Lucien sat in the main seat, with me beside him as his Donna. When Damon walked in with Serena, every pair of eyes in the room landed on them.Serena cowered behind Damon, gripping his sleeve like it was her lifeline."We're all here. Let's begin."Lucien made a gesture, and the butler started the projector. The footage from the night of the accident played on the massive screen. No one spoke. The color drained from Serena's face, inch by inch.I lifted my gaze to her. "Now—are you still going to call it an accident?"Her whole body shook, like her spine had been yanked out. She crumpled to the floor. After a long moment, she grabbed Damon's feet desperately. "Damon—save me!"Damon stared at the frozen image on the screen, his eyes dark with something terrifying."Shut up!"Serena froze. Tears spilled down her face instantly."You swore you'd pro

The butler's words made both Lucien and me go still.I set down my glass, and we walked together to the side hall. The butler had already set up the projector. On the screen was a piece of restored old footage. The image was dim—streetlights blurred into hazy halos through the rain.It was the scene of the car accident five years ago.A silver-gray sports car, barreling straight toward my mother. Then the perspective went chaotic, finally stabilizing at a low angle. The red roses she'd picked up for me flew into the air and scattered down like rain.I instinctively tightened my grip on Lucien's hand.So this was the moment she was hit.Lucien squeezed back firmly, about to pull me close—but I suddenly sat bolt upright. The perspective shifted again. She was getting up.I nearly gasped. The car hadn't hit her—she'd dodged the first impact. But the sports car reversed slowly, turned around. My mother clearly noticed it. She started running, stumbling forward. The image on the screen bega

Damon stared at our intertwined hands, the color draining from his face in slow waves."No way..."His throat moved, his gaze shifting back to me. "Eileen, you don't have to play along with him this far just to get a rise out of me."I almost laughed at the absurdity. Then Lucien kissed me—right there, without warning. His sudden kiss left me weak in the knees."Still think it's an act?"Lucien looked at Damon, a taunting smile on his lips. "Want more proof? If you've got the guts to watch, I've got the guts to do it."I smacked his chest half-heartedly. "Stop it."Lucien caught my hand, his eyes dropping to mine. They were full of want—raw and hungry. The next second, he swept me off my feet.I instinctively wrapped my arms around his neck. "What are you doing?""Exactly what I want to do most right now."Lucien carried me up the stairs, tossing over his shoulder, "Mr. Vesper. The door is that way. Don't let it hit you on the way out."Damon said nothing.Even without looking back, I

I stared at Damon, my fingers tightening unconsciously. How did he find out about the contract between Lucien and me?Before I could even ask, footsteps sounded from the stairs—slow, unhurried.Lucien came down, pulled me into his arms without a word, and fixed Damon with a cold stare."How did you find out?"Damon's gaze stayed on me, a flicker of coldness passing through his eyes."I found your prenuptial agreement—the lawyer who handled it is a friend of mine."Lucien's expression darkened.Damon continued:"The only reason you married Eileen was to secure your position as heir.""You agreed to a three-year marriage. After that, you'd divorce, and you'd pay her a fortune as compensation."Damon looked straight at me, his tone certain. "Am I wrong?"I felt Lucien's heartbeat beneath his shirt—strong, steady—and for a moment, I drifted. My thoughts slipped back five years.Back then, I'd arrived in Sicily with nothing but a few maxed-out credit cards. To survive, I took a job as an ac

Damon didn't answer right away.Raindrops tapped against the window, one after another, like they were counting the seconds for us."No."Finally, he spoke. His voice was hollow—sad, like the echo in an empty room."I never loved Serena."I looked at him and said nothing. He seemed afraid I wouldn't believe him, his tone turning urgent:"Eileen, all I had for her was obligation."His eyes fixed on my face. "The person I love—even now, even this second—has always been you."Damon stared at me, the last layer of restraint in his eyes finally cracking open. The words he'd held back for five years came rushing out of his throat, desperate to be heard."After Serena found out I was going to marry you, she fell into a deep depression.""I couldn't let her go to prison—she would've died in there. And I'd sworn to protect her.""That was the last time I indulged her. But I never thought you'd leave."My hand didn't move around the glass.Damon tugged at the corner of his mouth, bitter."These
