Chapter 2

Author: Redleaves
"Asset verification's fine. But this is your Vesper auction, and I don't trust your people."

I pulled the Donna Moretti badge from my bag and pinned it to my chest, my voice cold. "I'm requesting a neutral notary on-site."

Before the words even settled, Damon's scoff reached my ears.

"Can't keep up the act anymore, so now you're making excuses?"

I didn't want to bother with him.

But looking at that insufferable face of his, the fire in my chest started burning, slow and steady.

"Look closely. This is the unlimited black card."

I held it up, my tone flat. "Cut the crap. Either get a neutral notary here, or we keep bidding."

A flicker of mockery crossed Damon's eyes.

"Don Moretti would waste his time on someone like you?"

Someone nearby chimed in with a laugh:

"Probably bought it off some knockoff site. Slap it on and suddenly she thinks she's a real Donna Moretti."

"She wasn't this good at spinning stories when she ran off five years ago."

"Bet she couldn't make it overseas. Crawling back to save face."

I clenched the black card in my hand, about to fire back—

A shrill voice cut through.

"Eileen!"

The sharp click of heels on marble grew closer.

Then, a slap cracked across my face.

The sound echoed.

The entire auction hall went silent for a beat.

Serena stood in front of me, eyes red, looking like she was the one who'd been wronged.

"If I hadn't rushed over, I wouldn't even know you had the nerve to come back!"

"Is it because you heard he proposed to me? That's why you're here clinging to Damon again?"

My head was turned to the side, ears ringing.

The moment I snapped back, I raised my hand to return the favor—

But my wrist was seized mid-air.

Damon's low voice came from beside my ear. "Eileen. Don't make this worse."

I stared at him in disbelief.

I was the one who got hit.

And yet he stopped me.

A flicker of triumph lit up Serena's eyes.

The next second, she lunged forward and yanked my hair hard.

"Don't you have any shame left?"

"You chased after Damon back then and made everyone think I was the other woman!"

"Now five years later, you're back here using some fake Moretti Donna act to fool people!"

Her sharp nails raked across my cheek.

More slaps followed.

The Donna badge was ripped from my chest in the chaos.

"This needs to be authenticated," she announced loudly. "If this is a forged Moretti crest, everyone here could be implicated."

The crowd erupted.

"Oh my God, she actually dared to forge a Moretti badge?"

"Not being able to pay the bid is one thing—but impersonating someone's Donna?"

Someone even lifted a phone, aimed at my battered face.

"Film this. Put it on the dark web."

"Let everyone see what the DeLacroix heiress has become."

My scalp stung as she yanked my hair. My shoulders pinned down by two security guards. I could barely stay upright.

And Damon stood there the whole time, just watching.

Serena, as if exhausted from the beating, turned and buried herself in Damon's arms, sobbing violently.

"Damon, why does she always try to tear us apart?"

The guests murmured in comfort.

"Don't worry, Miss Serena. There's no way Don Vesper would fall for her."

"She broke off the engagement back then, and now she's back to embarrass herself again."

I almost laughed.

It was the same five years ago.

My mother lay in her hospital bed, never to wake again.

But all Serena had to do was shed a few tears, and Damon would stand by her side.

Like I was the aggressive one. The unreasonable one.

Damon pulled Serena closer, looking down at me from his high horse.

"Eileen. Apologize now."

"Admit you faked the identity and renounce this brooch. I'll forgive you, and we'll call it done."

I was shaking with rage.

Five years, and he hadn't changed one bit.

—Arrogant enough to make you sick.

I smiled, but my eyes burned fiercely.

"Damon, you don't get to forgive me."

The words fell. I broke free from the guards, swung my arm, and slapped Damon clean across the face.

  • Not His Donna, Not His Anything   Chapter 14

"Eileen, do you really think being a Donna means you can do whatever you want?"Serena's eyes locked onto me, her gaze venomous enough to draw blood."Let me tell you something—the Vesper family is no weaker than the Morettis. We don't accept any tribunal!"Damon's face was dark—almost black. He didn't respond to Serena. He just looked at me, like he'd finally made up his mind about something. The next second, he walked around the long table and stopped in front of me.Under the eyes of every family representative, the once-untouchable Don Vesper dropped to one knee before me."Eileen."His voice was raw—almost broken."I know 'sorry' won't bring your mother back. It won't erase what you went through.""I also know that the one who pushed you into the abyss wasn't really Serena or my father."He looked up, his eyes bloodshot."It was me.""I believed Serena's lies. I let my family corner you until you had nowhere left to go."He reached out, like he wanted to touch the hem of my dress—

The joint family tribunal was held at the Moretti estate.Every family on the East Coast sent representatives. At the head of the long table, Lucien sat in the main seat, with me beside him as his Donna. When Damon walked in with Serena, every pair of eyes in the room landed on them.Serena cowered behind Damon, gripping his sleeve like it was her lifeline."We're all here. Let's begin."Lucien made a gesture, and the butler started the projector. The footage from the night of the accident played on the massive screen. No one spoke. The color drained from Serena's face, inch by inch.I lifted my gaze to her. "Now—are you still going to call it an accident?"Her whole body shook, like her spine had been yanked out. She crumpled to the floor. After a long moment, she grabbed Damon's feet desperately. "Damon—save me!"Damon stared at the frozen image on the screen, his eyes dark with something terrifying."Shut up!"Serena froze. Tears spilled down her face instantly."You swore you'd pro

The butler's words made both Lucien and me go still.I set down my glass, and we walked together to the side hall. The butler had already set up the projector. On the screen was a piece of restored old footage. The image was dim—streetlights blurred into hazy halos through the rain.It was the scene of the car accident five years ago.A silver-gray sports car, barreling straight toward my mother. Then the perspective went chaotic, finally stabilizing at a low angle. The red roses she'd picked up for me flew into the air and scattered down like rain.I instinctively tightened my grip on Lucien's hand.So this was the moment she was hit.Lucien squeezed back firmly, about to pull me close—but I suddenly sat bolt upright. The perspective shifted again. She was getting up.I nearly gasped. The car hadn't hit her—she'd dodged the first impact. But the sports car reversed slowly, turned around. My mother clearly noticed it. She started running, stumbling forward. The image on the screen bega

Damon stared at our intertwined hands, the color draining from his face in slow waves."No way..."His throat moved, his gaze shifting back to me. "Eileen, you don't have to play along with him this far just to get a rise out of me."I almost laughed at the absurdity. Then Lucien kissed me—right there, without warning. His sudden kiss left me weak in the knees."Still think it's an act?"Lucien looked at Damon, a taunting smile on his lips. "Want more proof? If you've got the guts to watch, I've got the guts to do it."I smacked his chest half-heartedly. "Stop it."Lucien caught my hand, his eyes dropping to mine. They were full of want—raw and hungry. The next second, he swept me off my feet.I instinctively wrapped my arms around his neck. "What are you doing?""Exactly what I want to do most right now."Lucien carried me up the stairs, tossing over his shoulder, "Mr. Vesper. The door is that way. Don't let it hit you on the way out."Damon said nothing.Even without looking back, I

I stared at Damon, my fingers tightening unconsciously. How did he find out about the contract between Lucien and me?Before I could even ask, footsteps sounded from the stairs—slow, unhurried.Lucien came down, pulled me into his arms without a word, and fixed Damon with a cold stare."How did you find out?"Damon's gaze stayed on me, a flicker of coldness passing through his eyes."I found your prenuptial agreement—the lawyer who handled it is a friend of mine."Lucien's expression darkened.Damon continued:"The only reason you married Eileen was to secure your position as heir.""You agreed to a three-year marriage. After that, you'd divorce, and you'd pay her a fortune as compensation."Damon looked straight at me, his tone certain. "Am I wrong?"I felt Lucien's heartbeat beneath his shirt—strong, steady—and for a moment, I drifted. My thoughts slipped back five years.Back then, I'd arrived in Sicily with nothing but a few maxed-out credit cards. To survive, I took a job as an ac

Damon didn't answer right away.Raindrops tapped against the window, one after another, like they were counting the seconds for us."No."Finally, he spoke. His voice was hollow—sad, like the echo in an empty room."I never loved Serena."I looked at him and said nothing. He seemed afraid I wouldn't believe him, his tone turning urgent:"Eileen, all I had for her was obligation."His eyes fixed on my face. "The person I love—even now, even this second—has always been you."Damon stared at me, the last layer of restraint in his eyes finally cracking open. The words he'd held back for five years came rushing out of his throat, desperate to be heard."After Serena found out I was going to marry you, she fell into a deep depression.""I couldn't let her go to prison—she would've died in there. And I'd sworn to protect her.""That was the last time I indulged her. But I never thought you'd leave."My hand didn't move around the glass.Damon tugged at the corner of his mouth, bitter."These
