XXIII: Ascending

Out of anyone to appear here, I never expected it to be my uncle Cain!

“What are you doing here?!” I sob into his arms, then break off his embrace. “How did you know I was here?”

My uncle chuckles. “It’s gonna sound weird, but your mother told me in a dream,” he says and I nearly laugh at that because it doesn’t sound weird at all. But why would she only speak with uncle Cain through his dreams? Why not contact me too?

“We’ve had a lot of… weird lately,” I say, swallowing hard before turning around to check if Arkyn was still here. “Why are you here, uncle Cain? Did something happen?”

He sighs, then his eyes flicker to Arkyn before resting on me. “Your mother didn’t just tell me where you were, she had a few things she wanted me to relay to you. In private, if you don’t mind.”

I look at Arkyn and notice his reluctance, but he eventually nods and gestures toward the living room to his left. “I’ll be in my father’s study if you need me,” he says before walking off.
