Chapter 3

Author: Sesame King
I had no idea when she had come to stand at the door, her eyes glued onto my phone screen.

Chloe clearly sensed the tension in the air.

"Um, you two talk it out."

She excused herself under the pretense of printing documents and quickly stepped away.

Rachel walked over.

"Nicole, what's the meaning of this?"

I turned the log page toward her.

"Nineteen items.

"Why are they all addressed under my name?"

She only offered it a passing glance.

"Didn't I already explain it to you? It's just for convenience."

"Convenience for what?"

Impatience flared across her face.

"Why are you suddenly making such a fuss about this?

"You signed for so many packages before without a problem. Why make a fuss over my camera now?

"If you feel that my buying something expensive rubbed you the wrong way, just say it straight."

I could hardly believe my own ears.

"You think I'm jealous of you?"

"I didn't say that."

She denied it in her reply, but the look in her eyes meant exactly that.

I stared at her.

"Don't use my name ever again.

"For any orders already placed but not yet shipped, change every single one of them."

Earlier, I'd submitted a report through the platform's help center.

At four that afternoon, a customer service representative called me back.

The caller identified themselves as customer service from a certain e-commerce platform.

"Ms. Sullivan, may I ask if your shipping information has been used by someone else on a long-term basis?"

My heart tightened.

"Yes."

I briefly explained the situation to them.

The representative asked me to provide the relevant tracking numbers.

However, since those orders were not purchased through my account, I didn't have the information with me.

The representative said:

"Under these circumstances, we can't disclose another customer's order details to you.

"However, we can log your report that someone has been using your name and delivery details without your consent.

"If disputes arise in the future, we will keep a record of your complaint today."

I immediately asked:

"Can you give me the ticket reference number?"

The representative read off a string of numbers.

I noted it down and requested the processing status to be sent to my mobile phone.

After hanging up the phone, I let out a slight sigh of relief for the very first time.

At least I had acted first and left some proof.

When it was time to leave work that evening, Rachel seemed to have already left.

The camera from this morning sat on her desk.

The package had been opened.

The camera was there on full display.

Someone passing by murmured with envy: "So nice."

I didn't spare it a second glance.

Yet just as I reached the elevator entrance, floating comments suddenly sprouted out again.

"She will apply for a post-sales return tonight."

"The reason: scratches on the camera body upon unboxing, suspected resold item."

"In fact, she's replaced parts of the new camera with scratched ones from her old camera."

My feet came to a dead halt.

Rachel's voice rang out from behind me.

She hadn't left—she was hiding inside the stairwell taking a call.

"Don't worry.

"Her name is still on the shipping label. I've signed for it myself, but they'll see her name first.

"Even if the platform investigates, they will look into her first."

The blood in my entire body went cold instantly.

Instead of rushing over to confront her, I turned on my phone's voice recorder.

Rachel's voice came through the stairwell door in intermittent segments.

"I know.

"Didn't the previous few orders turn out fine anyway?

"It's just signing for a few things.

"Who knew she'd suddenly throw a fit today?"

The person on the other end of the line seemed to say something.

Rachel scoffed.

"She hates dealing with trouble.

"A few sweet words tomorrow and she'll be fine.

"Worst case, I'll just buy her a cup of coffee."

I stood outside the fire door, completely motionless.

We'd known each other for two years. Rachel knew I hated conflict.

She knew that as long as it wasn't a matter of fundamental principle, I would usually rather do a bit extra myself than make a fuss.

As it turned out, to her, that wasn't being easygoing.

It was being an easy target.

I saved the recording.

The next morning, a cup of coffee indeed sat on my desk.

Rachel sat down beside me as if nothing had happened yesterday.

"I was in a bad mood yesterday.

"Don't be mad, mkay?"

I glanced at the coffee.

I didn't touch it.

She lightly nudged my arm with her elbow.

"Eat out tonight, my treat?"

I asked, "Did you return the camera?"

Her eyes instantly flushed red.

"I was nice enough to buy you coffee. Why do you keep interrogating me?

"Is it really that big of a deal, signing for a few packages?

"Do you really have to do this?"

There was that sentiment again.I realized then, the fact that Rachel had turned out the way she did wasn't surprising after all.I lowered my head and let out a faint laugh."The day the brand representative and the police came to the company, the entire office was staring at me."Our team leader told me to hand over my access badge."Rachel stood beside me crying, claiming she knew nothing all along."If I hadn't discovered it in advance, if I hadn't had the audio recording, or the complaint ticket, or the delivery logs…"Do you think I would be fine now?"She didn't speak.I continued:"It was always my name she used."Every single delivery, she wanted me to verify and sign on her behalf."Whenever she returned something, she tried to have my name listed as the sender."Those weren't careless mistakes."Those were choices made over and over again."She sobbed even harder."But she's young yet."I raised my eyes to stare at her."So am I."That rendered her speechless. Why should you

During the investigation, the company also conducted an internal review.Administrative regulations were completely overhauled. From then on, all high-value private deliveries had to be signed for in person. The front desk would no longer accept shipping information that persistently misused other employees' names.Returns had to register the actual sender. After the new regulations were issued, Chloe told me privately:"Should've been like this ages ago."I thought nothing of it back then."Who knew how bad loopholes could be misused."I looked at the policy email and suddenly thought of those who told me not to fuss over it.Before something landed on their own shoulders, everyone thought it was just a favor.Adrian formally apologized to me later on.Not just a casual remark at my desk.Instead, he called me into the meeting room."My handling of the situation before was flawed."He spoke very slowly."The situation came up suddenly that day, and my first reaction was to contain the

In the afternoon, I contacted a lawyer, had the post preserved for evidence, and filed a complaint with the platform shortly after. At eight in the evening, my lawyer helped me draft an extremely concise statement. It didn't disclose any private details of the case.Just three points were mentioned.First, I never participated in any suspicious purchases or post-sales returns.Second, upon discovering that my identity had been misused long-term, I filed a record with the platform and contacted the police at the very first opportunity.Third, regarding the untrue content circulating online, I had preserved evidence of the false claims circulating online. An hour after the statement went out, the post was deleted. The next day, the account that posted it was deactivated.Yet the matter didn't end there. The police quickly tracked down that although the post wasn't made by Rachel herself, it came from a computer frequently used by Luke.Rachel was called in for questioning once again. She

By now, I thought the hardest part had already been behind me.Turned out I had underestimated Rachel once again. Two days later, a post suddenly went viral on a local industry forum. The title read: "Colleague was jealous of me buying luxury goods and dragged a personal conflict all the way to the police station. She almost destroyed me."The author didn't use their real name. And yet the situation was described in extreme detail."A design firm."Female colleague, around thirty years old."Usually keeps to herself."Suddenly acted off after seeing my frequent purchases of digital products."Took the initiative to help me sign for packages for a few months, then turned around and claimed I tried to frame her."She even secretly recorded audio and investigated my accounts."Causing me to get suspended."The final line read:"Moral of the story is never befriend jealous folks. They may act like they care about you, but behind your back, they're collecting evidence to use against you."T

I stared at her.Suddenly I found the whole thing to be quite laughable. From the moment things started, this was the first time she admitted to any wrongdoing. Not because she realized she had almost destroyed someone's job and reputation. But because all the evidence pointed squarely at her.She had no other choice.I told her:"I don't want anything from you."The authorities will handle this."She jerked her head up."Come on Nicole, we've known each other for two years!""And?""Was I not a good friend?"She sounded as though she had caught onto something."When you first joined this team, who showed you around?"When you worked overtime, who brought you meals?"I even got you a gift on your birthday!"I looked right at her."Which is why I signed for your packages a dozen times over."Have I not repaid your favors?"Do you expect me to take the fall for fraudulent compensations as well?"She froze. For the first time, I saw our so-called past friendship with absolute clarity.A f

The police investigation progressed faster than I had imagined.Three days later, I was called in again to give a statement. This time it wasn't in the company meeting room.It was at the police station.Rachel came as well. And there was another man.He looked about twenty-seven or twenty-eight years old, wearing a black jacket, with a very gaunt face.I had seen him on Rachel's Instagram before. Her boyfriend, Luke Simmons. The two of them had been together for three years.Rachel used to brag often about how good he was at business."His mind is razor sharp."Now I knew where the man put his sharp mind to use.The police had retrieved a portion of the platform's records.Out of the orders, the majority were placed through Rachel's own account.A small portion came from Luke's account. The payment cards belonged to the two of them respectively. All seven refunds or compensation payments had gone directly into their own payment accounts. Not a single cent had ever reached me.Most cru
