Chapter 5

Author: Sesame King
The next morning at nine, the moment I arrived at the company, I immediately sensed something was wrong.

Four visitors stood at the front desk: a camera brand representative, a platform representative, and two police officers.

Everyone's eyes kept darting toward the scene.

Adrian stood at the doorway of the meeting room, his face looking terrible.

"Nicole, step inside for a moment."

Just as I walked over, Rachel stood up from her desk.

Her face was pale, yet she spoke up before I could: "What happened?"

There was no reply.

The door to the meeting room closed after I stepped in.

The platform's risk control representative placed a stack of printed materials onto the table.

"Ms. Sullivan, over the past three-plus months, twenty-one high-value orders were placed using your name and work address as the delivery details.

"Among them, eleven resulted in post-sales requests.

"Seven resulted in refunds or compensation on grounds like item not received, damaged goods, or item not as described.

"The remaining four are currently under dispute processing."

My fingers turned stiff. There were even more than what I had uncovered.

The brand representative then spoke up.

"Our side is involved in three orders.

"One camera, two lenses.

"For the first two returned items, the serial numbers did not match the original orders.

"For the camera return requested yesterday, the submitted photos also showed signs of irregularities in the components."

Adrian's face sank instantly.

"What does this mean?"

The representative looked at me.

"Put simply, we suspect a case of fraudulent returns involving replacing new items with old ones or swapping out parts."

The room fell terrifyingly quiet.

The police officer's tone remained diplomatic.

"This is an ongoing investigation.

"Since multiple delivery records list you as the person who signed for the packages, and several return labels name you as the sender, we need to verify a few things with you."

I nodded.

"Understood."

Just then, the door to the meeting room was pushed open abruptly.

Rachel stood outside the doorway, her eyes red.

"Nicole, what on earth did you do?"

I looked at her without saying a word.

She took a step back as if completely unable to process it.

"Those things were mine. I only had you help receive them.

"Why did it turn out like this?"

Adrian whipped his head toward her.

"What do you mean?"

Tears instantly spilled from Rachel's eyes.

"Some of those orders were bought by me.

"My apartment isn't convenient for receiving packages, so I occasionally had them shipped to the company.

"Nicole kept saying she could help receive them.

"I had no idea what she was doing with those packages."

I knew all along that she would pin all responsibility on me.

The bullet comments had forewarned me days ago.

And still, hearing someone I had known for two years deliver lie after lie so seamlessly felt so absurd.

I asked her, "You had no idea?"

She shook her head while sobbing, taking a step forward.

"Nicole, were you short on money?

"You could have told me.

"Why would you do something like this?"

Quite a crowd had gathered outside the meeting room.

Everyone heard her.

Adrian's face was now a dark storm.

"Nicole, until this matter is cleared up, your involvement in current projects is suspended.

"Hand over your computer and access badge for now.

"Cooperate with the police and the platform's investigation staff.

"Don't let your personal issues affect the company."

Rachel's shoulders trembled as she wept.

"I just trusted her.

"I really never expected—"

"Enough."

I cut her off for the very first time.

Everyone looked over at me.

I pulled out my phone, tapped open the complaint acceptance text message sent to me by the platform yesterday, and opened the identity misuse ticket I had submitted three days ago.

Then I pushed the phone in front of the police officer.

"Officer, before you arrived, I was planning to involve the police myself."

Rachel's sobbing paused for a split second.

I continued:

"I want to report Rachel Stone for long-term misuse of my identity for receiving high-value deliveries.

"And for suspected fraudulent post-sales returns.

"I have the shipping logs, chat logs, audio recordings, return receipts right here, along with something she said herself."

I raised my head.

For the first time, I looked straight at Rachel's now ghostly pale face.

"Didn't you have no idea?

"Let's get to the bottom of it then."

There was that sentiment again.I realized then, the fact that Rachel had turned out the way she did wasn't surprising after all.I lowered my head and let out a faint laugh."The day the brand representative and the police came to the company, the entire office was staring at me."Our team leader told me to hand over my access badge."Rachel stood beside me crying, claiming she knew nothing all along."If I hadn't discovered it in advance, if I hadn't had the audio recording, or the complaint ticket, or the delivery logs…"Do you think I would be fine now?"She didn't speak.I continued:"It was always my name she used."Every single delivery, she wanted me to verify and sign on her behalf."Whenever she returned something, she tried to have my name listed as the sender."Those weren't careless mistakes."Those were choices made over and over again."She sobbed even harder."But she's young yet."I raised my eyes to stare at her."So am I."That rendered her speechless. Why should you

During the investigation, the company also conducted an internal review.Administrative regulations were completely overhauled. From then on, all high-value private deliveries had to be signed for in person. The front desk would no longer accept shipping information that persistently misused other employees' names.Returns had to register the actual sender. After the new regulations were issued, Chloe told me privately:"Should've been like this ages ago."I thought nothing of it back then."Who knew how bad loopholes could be misused."I looked at the policy email and suddenly thought of those who told me not to fuss over it.Before something landed on their own shoulders, everyone thought it was just a favor.Adrian formally apologized to me later on.Not just a casual remark at my desk.Instead, he called me into the meeting room."My handling of the situation before was flawed."He spoke very slowly."The situation came up suddenly that day, and my first reaction was to contain the

In the afternoon, I contacted a lawyer, had the post preserved for evidence, and filed a complaint with the platform shortly after. At eight in the evening, my lawyer helped me draft an extremely concise statement. It didn't disclose any private details of the case.Just three points were mentioned.First, I never participated in any suspicious purchases or post-sales returns.Second, upon discovering that my identity had been misused long-term, I filed a record with the platform and contacted the police at the very first opportunity.Third, regarding the untrue content circulating online, I had preserved evidence of the false claims circulating online. An hour after the statement went out, the post was deleted. The next day, the account that posted it was deactivated.Yet the matter didn't end there. The police quickly tracked down that although the post wasn't made by Rachel herself, it came from a computer frequently used by Luke.Rachel was called in for questioning once again. She

By now, I thought the hardest part had already been behind me.Turned out I had underestimated Rachel once again. Two days later, a post suddenly went viral on a local industry forum. The title read: "Colleague was jealous of me buying luxury goods and dragged a personal conflict all the way to the police station. She almost destroyed me."The author didn't use their real name. And yet the situation was described in extreme detail."A design firm."Female colleague, around thirty years old."Usually keeps to herself."Suddenly acted off after seeing my frequent purchases of digital products."Took the initiative to help me sign for packages for a few months, then turned around and claimed I tried to frame her."She even secretly recorded audio and investigated my accounts."Causing me to get suspended."The final line read:"Moral of the story is never befriend jealous folks. They may act like they care about you, but behind your back, they're collecting evidence to use against you."T

I stared at her.Suddenly I found the whole thing to be quite laughable. From the moment things started, this was the first time she admitted to any wrongdoing. Not because she realized she had almost destroyed someone's job and reputation. But because all the evidence pointed squarely at her.She had no other choice.I told her:"I don't want anything from you."The authorities will handle this."She jerked her head up."Come on Nicole, we've known each other for two years!""And?""Was I not a good friend?"She sounded as though she had caught onto something."When you first joined this team, who showed you around?"When you worked overtime, who brought you meals?"I even got you a gift on your birthday!"I looked right at her."Which is why I signed for your packages a dozen times over."Have I not repaid your favors?"Do you expect me to take the fall for fraudulent compensations as well?"She froze. For the first time, I saw our so-called past friendship with absolute clarity.A f

The police investigation progressed faster than I had imagined.Three days later, I was called in again to give a statement. This time it wasn't in the company meeting room.It was at the police station.Rachel came as well. And there was another man.He looked about twenty-seven or twenty-eight years old, wearing a black jacket, with a very gaunt face.I had seen him on Rachel's Instagram before. Her boyfriend, Luke Simmons. The two of them had been together for three years.Rachel used to brag often about how good he was at business."His mind is razor sharp."Now I knew where the man put his sharp mind to use.The police had retrieved a portion of the platform's records.Out of the orders, the majority were placed through Rachel's own account.A small portion came from Luke's account. The payment cards belonged to the two of them respectively. All seven refunds or compensation payments had gone directly into their own payment accounts. Not a single cent had ever reached me.Most cru
