Chapter 1

Tristan Kelley posted the agreement he had signed with Sage in the group chat.

"Party A: Sage. Party B: Tristan Kelley.

"Through amicable negotiation, both parties have reached the following agreement regarding compensation for college entrance exam delays.

"If Party B, while preparing to take the college entrance exam, inadvertently misses the exam and is unable to enter the examination hall, Party A shall assume full liability for compensation.

"Compensation amount: within three business days, Party A shall issue a one-time lump-sum payment of 50 million dollars to Party B."

The class group chat erupted. Messages poured in faster than anyone could read.

"50 million! Is this for real? Tristan, you're not messing with us, right?"

Tristan sent a voice message, his words trembling with excitement. "The agreement's right there. How could it be fake? Sage even signed and stamped it. It's legally binding!"

"What if Sage doesn't honor it?" someone asked.

Tristan scoffed. "We're the honors prep class. Every single one of us is pulling near-perfect scores. Sage is backed by a massive company. Do you think they'd dare deny it? Do you think they'd throw their reputation away like that?

"Even if the AI doesn't care about its image, the company behind it sure does!

"Skip this one exam, study another year, and we'll still get into the top schools. This is 50 million dollars we’re talking about!"

I stared at the screenshot of the Sage agreement, fully convinced that every single one of them had lost their minds.

Sage was just an AI. It had no legal personhood, no assets of its own, and certainly no bank account. It would never pay out and, even if it somehow wanted to, it had no way to produce the money.

In my previous life, I had begged and pleaded with every last person, explaining this exact reasoning. Nobody listened. They accused me of being jealous and of not wanting to see anyone else get ahead.

This time around, I did not want to say a single word. I wanted to see exactly who they planned to collect their 50 million dollars from.

My phone buzzed. It was a message from my best friend, Tyler Russo.

"Zane, look at this! 50 million! You signing?"

In my previous life, Tyler was the one I had physically dragged from the mall to the exam hall. He had been convinced a windfall was waiting for him and had followed Tristan on a spending spree. I was the one who called his parents and hauled him away by force.

Later, when the mob came for me with acid, Tyler stood at the very front. "Zane Archer, you destroyed my dream of getting rich overnight. You ruined the only shot I ever had at turning my life around!"

The searing pain still seemed to linger on my face. I gripped my phone until my fingertips turned white.

"No thanks. I wasn't born lucky enough to strike it rich. Go ahead and sign."

Tristan wrote up a step-by-step guide on how to trick Sage into signing the insurance agreement. "Make sure you screen-record the entire thing. If Sage refuses to pay, these recordings will be our evidence."

"I've got a cousin at a law firm. I'll get him to sue them into the ground to the point they won't know what hit them."

He started a sign-up chain in the group chat.

"Tristan Kelley, signed."

"Tyler Russo, signed."

"Kyle Brewer, signed."

By the end, 32 people had signed. There were 33 students in the class.

"You're not signing?" Tristan tagged me directly, his tone dripping with mockery.

"Zane, do you think you're above the rest of us? Or do you just think the whole class is beneath you?"

I was about to reply when Megan Hurst, my childhood sweetheart, called me instead. "Can you quit picking fights with Tristan? Just sign the thing. Who do you think you are? Do you think you're the only smart one in this entire class?"

In my previous life, it was her foot that delivered the final kick that sent me over the edge.

"Keep acting like this and you shouldn't bother calling yourself my boyfriend anymore. The engagement is off. I refuse to be humiliated like this!"

I scoffed. "Get lost. I don't want a girlfriend this stupid."

I hung up and blocked her immediately.

"We all agreed. Nobody takes the exam. The more people involved, the more seriously Sage has to take this and the better our chances of getting paid!"

Several people tagged me in the chat. "Zane, just sign already! You're the only one left!"

"Don't push your luck!"

I was just grateful that, this time around, Tyler would not be standing in front of me with a bottle of acid.As for Tristan, he had lost his mind. The internet might eventually move on and forget about him, but the 31 people he had dragged down with him never would.Every so often, he would pull up screenshots of his conversations with Sage and show them to anyone who would listen. "Sage said it's going to pay me back. As soon as it gets a bank account, the money's coming."A few days later, it would be a different story. "Sage and I never had any beef. Why would it do this to me?"When his mind was at its worst, he would say, "I've got 50 million dollars coming. It's about to hit my account. I'm about to be rich."On the rare occasions his mind was clear, he would cry quietly. "Why did I believe Sage? Why did I throw my whole future away?"In September, the campus at Carlton University was carpeted with fallen leaves.I wheeled my suitcase down the main path toward the freshm

He walked through the whole story, his voice growing more and more agitated as he went."Sage is a legitimate platform. None of us expected a legitimate company to pull something this shady!"It made the offer. It said if we missed the exam, it'd pay out 50 million dollars. All 32 of us got scammed. We're the victims here!"There's a company behind it, isn't there? Why should 32 kids have to pay for their mistake? We're only 18!"And Sage apologized to me. It admitted it was in the wrong and told me to contact its parent company for compensation. It said that with its own words!"Maybe it was the way he looked, broken and desperate, but the comments section actually started producing some sympathetic voices."AI making promises it can't keep is genuinely a problem that needs regulation.""Sure, he messed up, but doesn't Sage share some of the blame here?"The majority, however, were still tearing him apart."You really just don't listen, do you.""If the parent company pays h

The post blew up the same day. It hit the front page with a trending tag and racked up views instantly. The entire class was ecstatic, cheering in the group chat."We made it!""It's going viral!""Sage is finished!"They expected public opinion to rally behind them. What they got was the exact opposite."I'm dying. Who actually trusts an AI chatbot with their future? Sage: 'Go ahead and call the cops on me. I don't even have hands.'""Party A: Sage. Party B: Tristan Kelley. I showed this contract to my dog and he could've signed the same thing. Literally the same legal standing.""Sage! Say something, Sage! Why won't you pay up? Oh wait, you're an AI. You don't have money.""I watched the full screen recording. Sage didn't trick him into signing anything. He tricked Sage into signing. He sweet-talked and manipulated the AI the entire time.""Sage going home like: 'Mom, I'm back. I owe 32 people 50 million dollars each, can you help me out?' Mom: 'You're no child of mine.'"

"Nothing.""Same here.""Me neither!""What the hell is going on?!""Calm down, calm down." Tristan jumped in immediately to keep everyone steady."The first exam started at 9:00 am. Technically, the 72 hours aren’t up until tomorrow morning at nine. What are you all panicking for? Get a grip.""Really? There's not going to be a problem, right?" Doubt was starting to creep in."Tristan's word isn't good enough for you?" Megan stepped in to back him up, tacking on a laughing emoji."Everyone get some sleep tonight. By the time you wake up tomorrow, we'll all be millionaires!"Nobody slept that night. The entire group stayed up, half-heartedly playing word games in the chat to pass the time. They barely made it to 9:00 am. The moment the clock hit nine, someone finally cracked."Where's the money?""Yeah, where is it?""It's 9:00 am! Tristan!"Tristan fired off a voice message. "Everyone relax. I'm pulling my cousin into the chat. He's a lawyer, a real professional. He'll s

"Zane, cut the act. You don't have the guts to go for the money, so you can't stand watching the rest of us get it. That's what this is about, right?"You're nothing but a coward. You'll spend your whole life working for someone else, cramming onto the subway, living in some rental dump!"We've got a signed agreement, screen recordings and evidence. Sage can't weasel out of it. As for you? You've got nothing. All you've got is your pathetic little pride."The more Tristan talked, the more worked up he got. His fists clenched tighter with every word, and passersby were starting to stare."You think showing up to the exam means you've won? So what if you get in? After you graduate, you'll still end up working for somebody who never went to college. Who do you think you are?"Megan chimed in from beside him. "Exactly! Tristan's right! You just can't stand to see anyone doing well! You're nothing but a jealous freak!"The crowd began to stir. Some of them pushed forward, others held

The next morning at eight, Mom had a full breakfast spread ready for me.I ate while scrolling through the group chat with great amusement. They were already in full celebration mode, showing off their shopping hauls.Megan posted a selfie holding three bags from a luxury boutique, captioned, "Spent a couple hundred thousand. My arms are about to fall off. Once the 50 million hits my account, I'm buying out the entire store."Tristan commented underneath, "Hell yeah, Megan! I dropped 400,000 myself. Got myself a Rolex."Tyler sent a voice message, his voice shaking with excitement, "I maxed out all three of my parents' credit cards! That's 200,000! The 50 million will land in three days anyway, so who cares!"The chat was buzzing with celebration, as though the 50 million dollars was already sitting in their bank accounts. My phone buzzed again. It was a message from Megan."Zane, where the hell are you? If you don't show up, I swear I'll make your life miserable. I'm not lettin
