Rhett

I wake up alone.

Not physically—Brynlee is still on her side of the bed, curled away from me with her silky hair spilling across the pillow. But the emotional distance between us feels like a chasm that no amount of physical proximity can bridge.

Last night's conversation plays on repeat in my head, each word cutting deeper than it did in the moment. Maybe you'd be better off without someone who can't figure out how to be a proper mate anymore. The pain in her voice when she said it was real, but so was the resignation. Like she's already decided this isn't going to work and she's just waiting for me to accept it.

I fought so hard to bring her home. Moved heaven and earth to find her, risked dimensional collapse to pull her back from whatever void she was trapped in. And now she's suggesting that maybe I should have left her there.

The thought sends such a wave of raw agony through me that I have to get out of bed before I wake her up with my breathing.

RhettThe house feels like a tomb after Brynlee leaves.Maya comes home from school to find me sitting at the kitchen table, staring at the note Brynlee left explaining that she's gone to stay with her sister for a while. "To give everyone space to figure out what they really want," the careful handwriting says. "I'll call about visitation schedules once things settle."Visitation schedules. Like we're humans who can just get divorced. We both know it’s not that simple. "Where's Mommy?" Maya asks, setting down her backpack and looking around the kitchen like Brynlee might be hiding somewhere."She went to visit Aunt Olivia," I tell her, because it's easier than explaining that our family is falling apart again just two weeks after I brought her mother home from the dead."When is she coming back?"I don't know if she is, I think but can't say. "We're still figuring that out, sweetheart."Maya's face crumples, and I realize she understands more than I've been giving her credit for. "I

Brynlee"It's not like that," Rhett says quietly, finally responding verbally to my accusation."Then what is it like? Explain to me what's so important about your conversations with Harper that you need to lie about where you're going to have them."Rhett glances around the café, clearly aware that we're drawing attention. Several patrons are openly staring now, and the barista looks like she's debating whether to call security."Can we please continue this at home?" he asks."No. I want to know right now what you two have been discussing behind my back.""We've been discussing treatment options for bond disruption," Harper says when Rhett doesn't answer immediately. "And yes, we've talked about the possibility that the damage might be permanent."Permanent. The word hits like a physical blow. So they have decided I'm broken beyond repair."And what conclusion did you reach?" I ask, my voice deadly quiet.Harper and Rhett exchange a look that tells me everything I need to know. They'

Brynlee The mate bond slams back to life at two o'clock in the afternoon like someone flipping a switch. One moment I'm folding laundry in blessed silence, resigned to another day of feeling disconnected from my own life. The next, I'm drowning in sensation as our bond roars back to overwhelming intensity.Rhett. His presence floods my consciousness so suddenly I have to grab the edge of the dresser to keep from falling over. I can feel his location, his emotional state, the complex mixture of guilt and confusion and something that feels dangerously close to resignation. But there's something wrong with what I'm sensing. He's not where he said he'd be.This morning, he mentioned running errands after dropping Maya at school. Simple, mundane tasks that shouldn't generate this kind of emotional complexity. But the location I'm picking up through our bond isn't the hardware store or the bank. He's at Café Luna. And he's not alone. The realization sends my wolf into immediate territorial

Rhett"Can I ask you something?" Harper says eventually breaking the silence we’d fallen into."Sure.""What do you want from this relationship? Not what you think you should want, not what you used to want. What do you actually want right now?"The question forces me to examine feelings I've been avoiding. What do I want from Brynlee? The easy answer is "everything we used to have"—the intimacy, the connection, the sense of being two halves of a complete whole. But what if that's not possible anymore?"I want her to be happy," I say finally. "I want her to feel safe and loved and like she belongs somewhere.""With you?""If that's what would make her happy, yes. But if being with me makes her feel trapped or obligated or like she's failing at something she used to be good at..." I trail off, unable to finish the thought."Then maybe the most loving thing you could do is let her go," Harper says gently. The words are a shock to my system. "You think I should leave her?""I think you s

Brynlee Maya joins us for dinner, chattering about her day at school and the art project she's working on. Her presence provides a distraction from the growing tension between Rhett and me, but I catch her glancing between us with the perceptive concern that means she's picking up on undercurrents she doesn't understand."Are we still having movie night on Friday?" she asks as I clear the dishes."Of course," Rhett answers before I can respond. "Wouldn't miss it."The automatic way he answers, like he's making decisions for our family without consulting me, grates against nerves that are already raw. Before I disappeared, we made parenting decisions together. Now he seems to be operating like he's been Maya's primary parent for so long that my input is optional.Which is probably fair, considering he has been her primary parent for six months. But it still stings."Actually," I say, more sharply than intended, "I was hoping we could discuss weekend plans together before making commit
