Chapter 3

Author: Much Better
Hence, I never dared to slack off.

If I wanted to keep my scholarship, I had to be at the top every year.

That was how Tessa ended up stuck as the eternal runner-up.

It was also because the little heiress had such a strong sense of pride that I got a chance to step into the world of the rich.

However, I was nothing like her. Someone like me, who had to dig myself out of the gutter, would never waste any opportunity.

I dragged my luggage into the room and closed the door behind me. I lay down on the bed, savoring a rare moment of peace.

Then, the comments popped up again, mocking me as I enjoyed the tranquility.

"What an idiot! No wonder she's just cannon fodder. She's so quick to believe whatever people say!"

"Do you think she really believes she's an heiress now? Don't tell me she'll just hand in a blank paper for the SAT later!"

"That would be perfect! Then the female lead can grab her university offer letter and kick her out. Just imagining that scene cracks me up. It's like kicking someone when they're down!"

I stared at the barrage of comments with a blank face. They all thought I was stupid, but honestly, I was grateful to Tessa's family for crafting such a beautiful "dream of wealth" for me.

I opened my suitcase. There were just a few simple clothes at the top, but underneath was crammed full of wrinkled stacks of practice papers.

"No way! Her whole suitcase is full of exercise books and practice test papers!"

"She doesn't care about studying? This side character deserves an Oscar!"

I pulled out my notebook, which was full of mistakes, and started reviewing each problem I had gotten wrong. I worked through them one by one until two in the morning.

Suddenly, I heard footsteps in the hallway. I quickly turned off the lights and lay down.

Tessa pushed open my door, glanced around the room, and asked, "Lucia, are you awake?"

I didn't answer.

When Tessa saw that I was sound asleep, she let out a cold laugh and left. She was frightened that I would actually take my studies seriously, so much so that she came over late at night just to check on me.

There were 100 days left until the SAT.

Every day, I went to and from school in Scott's car with his driver.

Whenever I focused on my lessons, reading and working on problems in class, Scott would come over and pull the pen out of my hand in annoyance.

I stared at him, confused. "What is it?"

He looked at me for a long time, then said in a low voice. "Lucia, you don't have to study so hard. You can have a good life without it. Are you studying because you don't trust me? I don't like it when you act like this. I want you to rely on me completely. That's what a good fiancée should do."

I had liked him for so many years, so of course I couldn't bring myself to refuse. "If you don't want me to study, then I won't."

He leaned in closer. For the first time ever, I felt his breath so close to me. I could even smell his unique scent.

"Don't study anymore, okay? That way, you'll have to depend on me."

My heart pounded wildly. Even in that moment, I caught the hint of disgust in his eyes.

But I didn't care.

All I cared about was my own happiness.

I wrapped my arms around his neck and made my first demand.

"You said I'm your fiancée, and that I should depend on you. Then, I want a grand confession. Scott, show me you really mean it."

The old me would never have dared ask for anything so bold from the guy I liked.

But now, if he wanted something from me, he would have to give something in return. It was only fair.

That very afternoon, Scott covered the school field with nine-thousand nine-hundred and ninety-nine roses and made a grand confession to me.

When his soft, cool lips finally, hesitantly brushed against mine, I finally understood.

They were willing to pay any price to render me completely useless.

"By the way, I wasn't the one who called the police. You should be thanking everyone in the livestream."The medal pinned to my chest was actually a hidden camera. From the moment I agreed to meet Scott on the sports field, the livestream had already started rolling.Tessa's eyes went wide in disbelief. The police rushed in, arresting everyone involved. I was taken away by ambulance to the hospital.Lying in the white hospital bed, Scott stood at my bedside, apologizing weakly. "I'm sorry… I have no idea that you've gone through so much."I nodded curtly. "It doesn't matter."His eyes suddenly lit up, full of hope. "So… Does that mean you'll forgive me? Do we still have a chance…?""You're so disgusting," I spat, my face etched with repulsion. I didn't let him dream, not even for a second."You and Tessa are the same. You share the same values. You're only apologizing because you're interested in me. When you were helping her hurt me, you never thought that you were in the wr

"You hear that, Tessa? This is the man you always claimed is loyal to you," I said coldly.Scott froze on the spot, confused why I suddenly brought up Tessa. He didn't understand what was going on until a girl burst out from behind a tree and slapped him hard across the face. "Scott! You actually fell for her? I'm telling you now—she has known everything all along! She knows you got close to her with an agenda! She flirted with you, slept with you, and got close to you just to piss me off!"To her, you're like a cheap host. She played with you when she felt like it. Now that she's done with you, you're even thinking of betraying our families? The Walker and Flores families have worked together for years! Do you really think your family will get anything out of this?!"Tessa turned and glared at me, every word laced with hate and venom. "Lucia, you're just a worthless nobody from the gutter. So what if you got top marks or made it into MIT? My family has money. There are a milli

Everyone began to sympathize with what I had been through. They even cheered for me for being able to pull myself up by using my own bootstraps!Meanwhile, Scott spent days desperately trying to reach me.But honestly, I didn't have time to care. After all, as the state's top scorer, I was busy with endless media interviews. I had even taken on some tutoring jobs.A publishing house reached out, hoping I could organize my study notes and learning methods into a set of "Top Scorer Notes" for publication. I had to seize every opportunity. I knew I'd need money for many things in the future. My study notes sold out both online and offline.Countless parents left raving reviews online, saying that after their children read my materials, their grades improved dramatically. Their children even found better study methods and identified the weaknesses in their studies. With all the recommendations, the sales for my notes kept increasing. In the end, I earned nearly two hundred thous

Tessa, uncaring of the consequences, immediately started a livestream. On camera, she showed my recent exam scores, focusing on my two mock exams. Neither one even broke 400, and I had been at the bottom of the class. As she waved her ID for the camera, she accused me with righteous indignation. "Lucia cheated! With mock exam scores like this, how could she suddenly become the top scorer in the state?"Online discussions exploded.People started tagging me, demanding an explanation. I just laughed, opened up my private YouTube account, and revealed it to the public. There, I had 99 private study vlogs posted. Every video showed me studying until the early hours, notebooks covered in dense notes, even memorizing notes while I was showering or using the bathroom…I smiled at Tessa. "Actually, I should thank you. If I hadn't spent the past one hundred days as an heiress, I never would've had such a great environment to study. And with a handsome guy around to have fun with wh

Tessa kept refreshing my results page, muttering to herself the whole time. "No way. This must be a system glitch!"The principal and a few reporters came over, staring straight at my score screen. My score was blank. Below it was a line in bold:"Total score: You are ranked in the state's top 50. Please check back on the 27th for more details."Everyone in the room was stunned.Even the comments section froze for several seconds before it exploded again."Holy… This is crazy! Did I read that right? The side character's score is hidden, and she's in the top 50 in the whole state? Didn't the novel say she only scored 300 or something and couldn't even get into a community college? What is the author doing?!""No way she's the state's top scorer, right?""Get real! At best, she's in the top 50. The top scorer in a whole state full of geniuses? No way the underdog would ever get that lucky. The odds are impossible…"But in the very next second, my homeroom teacher's phone buzze

Scott's expression changed, and he said impatiently, "I'm doing all this for you! If it weren't for me, would you have ever gotten first place?"Tessa's eyes were red as she shouted back, "But did I ever ask you to sacrifice yourself?" Scott fell silent, then let out a long sigh. "Can you stop? There's only one week left. This whole farce is almost over."As for me, I didn't feel hurt at all. After all, Scott and I were just using each other.Pretending to be a bad student got me a hundred days of close, romantic interaction with the school's heartthrob. It was totally worth it!The mock exams came as scheduled. In both rounds, I kept my scores steady at three or four hundred. It wasn't enough even for a normal university, let alone MIT or Harvard. On the day of the SAT, we were all assigned to different exam halls. Before going in, Scott tried to comfort me. "It's okay. Even if you do badly, you still have me."I smiled and nodded, then turned and walked into the exam room—a
