LOGINWhen my family was at its poorest, a wealthy family found me and claimed that I was their real daughter. The school heartthrob I crushed on? He was my fiancé all along! Still reeling from all these surprises, a mysterious message suddenly popped up in front of me. "This is where everything changes. The cannon fodder is taken home by the female lead's parents, forced to drop out of school, and then gets pregnant by her fiancé. In the end, everyone thinks she's a harbringer of misfortune, and she's beaten to death." My hand froze as I held the paternity test results. My mom's eyes filled with tears as she took the report from me. "My poor child, you've suffered enough all these years! Don't worry. Just come home with us and rest. You're our daughter now. The family business is enough for you to live comfortably forever. You don't even need to take the SAT if you don't want to." The school heartthrob lowered his head and whispered sensually into my ear, "Listen to me, Lucia. Studying is hard. I'll take care of you from now on."
View More“They were just so adorable, and seeing the smiles on all their faces made me so happy, Dad.” Kiara rambled on about her previous expedition for a charity project. She was extremely passionate about helping the less privileged. The kids in the Caribbean, particularly Jamaica, didn’t have access to any water, so she and her team stayed there for a couple of weeks, making boreholes, wells, and taps for them.
Of course, she was a Lux, but she didn’t misuse her power, or take it for granted. Instead, she put it towards helping others who were in need, endangered, or living in not-so-safe homes. It had become a part of her, one that she could never take away.
She pointed at her phone smiling, “Look at them!” Her father, Damian Lux, watched the video to the end, feeling very proud of his one and only daughter. “And there was this lovely little girl too, she was so intelligent and beautiful, I couldn’t help but admire how strong and resilient she was.”
“She told me she would go to the river every day with her mother to fetch water, and most times she would help her prepare food for the household. Her name is Ronica.” She grinned.
“That’s amazing, cara mia.” He responded, leaning away from his cup of coffee and placing a kiss on her forehead. In Texas, Damian’s company was one of the most reputable, and his daughter was doing a good job upholding and boosting that reputation. He definitely couldn’t ask for more.
Maria, her mother, emerged from the kitchen, with a tray of food in hand for everyone. “It’s time for breakfast, amore,” she warned Kiara with a stern look on her face, “Put the phone down.”
Kiara groaned, placing her phone face-down on the table, before grabbing her plate from the tray. “Why did you cook today? Is Rosa still off?” She inquired, curious as to why their chef wasn’t back yet.
“Family emergency, not that it’s any of your business,” She smiled, biting into her toast. “She will be back by tomorrow.”
“Don’t talk to my precious daughter that way,” Damian teased, pointing at her.
Kiara laughed, taking a sip of her coffee and eating her breakfast. “The video is going viral, you guys! Who would’ve thought? I might end up taking another trip to Jamaica. It’s lovely over there.” She sported a victorious smile on her face, as she wiggled her eyebrows playfully.
“We’re proud of you.” Both parents said in unison. They glanced at each other, trying to stifle laughter. Just then, the doorbell rang signaling an unexpected visitor. Kiara looked at the wall, where the security camera’s monitor was mounted.
It was Luca. Just when she finally had breathing space to talk to her father freely, he had to show up. It’s not as if she hated him, she just didn’t like him. He was weird and was always trying to get with the trends in a cringe way.
The security guard let him in, and after a few minutes, Luca showed up in their dining area, dressed in a fancy suit. He was so ripped that his suit would probably burst at any moment if he tried to flex his muscles. “Good morning everyone.” He greeted with a slight bow of his head as he crossed his arms behind his back. His eyes lingered on Kiara for a couple of seconds, before he turned to face Damian.
“What’s up, L-boy?” Damian cheered, as they shared a brotherly hug, patting each other's backs as if they hadn’t seen one another in forever. “Well, I wouldn’t want to intrude on your family time, but there’s an impromptu meeting with the stakeholders that we have to attend soon.”
Damian started to walk away from the table, when Kiara pulled him back by the arm, “Dad, stay home for goodness sake. You mustn’t go anywhere.” She huffed, angrily.
“Cara mia, I have to. This could be our last chance to sign the contract.” He pleaded with his eyes, rubbing her hand gently. “I’ll be back soon, I promise.”
Though Kiara knew it was just a fib, he wouldn’t come back early enough for them to have an actual conversation anymore. It usually ended with her fast asleep in bed, and her dad coming to kiss her goodnight once he’d gotten back. She hated the way Luca always had to intrude on their bonding time, and that was majorly the reason why she disliked him most.
Kiara and Maria watched from the table as Damian got ready, shaking their heads. Maria sighed, smacking her lips, as she rolled her eyes. She muttered something barely inaudible that even Kiara didn’t hear.
After Damian and Luca left, Kiara turned to face her mother. “Do you see why I don’t like him?” She complained, her eye twitching as she gripped her cutlery tightly. “DO. YOU. SEE?!” She was immensely frustrated, her voice growing louder by the second. Luca always did this, it was as if he hated seeing Damian with Kiara, cause he just wouldn’t stop.
“Honey, work called. I’m sure your father wouldn’t have left if it wasn’t related to work,” She replied, with a hint of sadness in her eyes. “I didn’t want him to go either, hun.” She leaned across the table, placing her hand over Kiara’s and rubbing it gently, in an effort to pacify her.
“Whatever…” Kiara breathed, her eyes meeting her mum’s. “I just want to tw*st his neck and sn*p it, ugh.” She groaned, chewing on her leftover toast. “How do you feel about your husband leaving you for a man?” Kiara held her hand out as if holding a microphone. “Go on-”
Her words were cut off by the doorbell ringing again, but this time she couldn’t see who was there. She pressed the button to talk to the security guard, “Hey. Who’s there? Can’t see anyone, Mabel.”
“It’s a man, Miss. He says he has something you might be looking for.”
"By the way, I wasn't the one who called the police. You should be thanking everyone in the livestream."The medal pinned to my chest was actually a hidden camera. From the moment I agreed to meet Scott on the sports field, the livestream had already started rolling.Tessa's eyes went wide in disbelief. The police rushed in, arresting everyone involved. I was taken away by ambulance to the hospital.Lying in the white hospital bed, Scott stood at my bedside, apologizing weakly. "I'm sorry… I have no idea that you've gone through so much."I nodded curtly. "It doesn't matter."His eyes suddenly lit up, full of hope. "So… Does that mean you'll forgive me? Do we still have a chance…?""You're so disgusting," I spat, my face etched with repulsion. I didn't let him dream, not even for a second."You and Tessa are the same. You share the same values. You're only apologizing because you're interested in me. When you were helping her hurt me, you never thought that you were in the wr
"You hear that, Tessa? This is the man you always claimed is loyal to you," I said coldly.Scott froze on the spot, confused why I suddenly brought up Tessa. He didn't understand what was going on until a girl burst out from behind a tree and slapped him hard across the face. "Scott! You actually fell for her? I'm telling you now—she has known everything all along! She knows you got close to her with an agenda! She flirted with you, slept with you, and got close to you just to piss me off!"To her, you're like a cheap host. She played with you when she felt like it. Now that she's done with you, you're even thinking of betraying our families? The Walker and Flores families have worked together for years! Do you really think your family will get anything out of this?!"Tessa turned and glared at me, every word laced with hate and venom. "Lucia, you're just a worthless nobody from the gutter. So what if you got top marks or made it into MIT? My family has money. There are a milli
Everyone began to sympathize with what I had been through. They even cheered for me for being able to pull myself up by using my own bootstraps!Meanwhile, Scott spent days desperately trying to reach me.But honestly, I didn't have time to care. After all, as the top scorer, I was busy with endless media interviews. I had even taken on some tutoring jobs.A publishing house reached out, hoping I could organize my study notes and learning methods into a set of "Top Scorer Notes" for publication. I had to seize every opportunity. I knew I'd need money for many things in the future. My study notes sold out both online and offline.Countless parents left raving reviews online, saying that after their children read my materials, their grades improved dramatically. Their children even found better study methods and identified the weaknesses in their studies. With all the recommendations, the sales for my notes kept increasing. In the end, I earned nearly two hundred thousand doll
Tessa, uncaring of the consequences, immediately started a livestream. On camera, she showed my recent exam scores, focusing on my two mock exams. Neither one even broke 400, and I had been at the bottom of the class. As she waved her ID for the camera, she accused me with righteous indignation. "Lucia cheated! With mock exam scores like this, how could she suddenly become the top scorer?"Online discussions exploded.People started tagging me, demanding an explanation. I just laughed, opened up my private YouTube account, and revealed it to the public. There, I had 99 private study vlogs posted. Every video showed me studying until the early hours, notebooks covered in dense notes, even memorizing notes while I was showering or using the bathroom…I smiled at Tessa. "Actually, I should thank you. If I hadn't spent the past months as an heiress, I never would've had such a great environment to study. And with a handsome guy around to have fun with whenever I got tired of s
Tessa kept refreshing my results page, muttering to herself the whole time. "No way. This must be a system glitch!"The principal and a few reporters came over, staring straight at my score screen. My score was blank. Below it was a line in bold:"Total score: You are ranked in the top 50. Plea
Scott's expression changed, and he said impatiently, "I'm doing all this for you! If it weren't for me, would you have ever gotten first place?"Tessa's eyes were red as she shouted back, "But did I ever ask you to sacrifice yourself?" Scott fell silent, then let out a long sigh. "Can you stop? T
It wasn't just Scott. Jane was the same as well.Whenever I tried to study at home, Jane would start looking worried. That was when I would make my demands."Mom, can we take a set of mother-daughter photos together?""Mom, will you read me a bedtime story tonight?""Mom, can we bake a cake for
Hence, I never dared to slack off. If I wanted to keep my scholarship, I had to be at the top every year. That was how Tessa ended up stuck as the eternal runner-up.It was also because the little heiress had such a strong sense of pride that I got a chance to step into the world of the rich.
