Chapter 4

Author: Year on Year
"Understanding," I murmured to myself, tasting the irony.

When my dad came to stay with us, Bruce had complained that our apartment was too cramped and insisted there wasn't enough room for him. Now that his dad was coming, Bruce was ready to buy a million-dollar condo right across the hall.

When my dad needed treatment, Bruce had called it a bottomless pit that would leave us with nothing. When his dad fell ill, he was willing to spend every dollar we had.

So, this was what being "understanding" meant. It meant sacrificing my dad for his.

...

After Lindsey left, Bruce was in a good mood. He hummed to himself as he organized the expensive supplements he'd bought into the pantry.

I lay on the bed and checked my phone.

The appointment portal had finally updated: [1 patient ahead of you. Please wait.]

It was almost my turn.

I stared at the screen and whispered under my breath, "Hang in there a little longer, Dad. I'm coming to fetch you."

Bruce's parents arrived the following Wednesday afternoon.

The moment they stepped through the door, Bruce sprang into action. He grabbed their luggage, brought them their slippers, and fussed over them as though they were fragile antiques.

"Dad, Mom, you must be exhausted after the trip. Sit down and get some rest," he said warmly, then turned to me. "Cheryl, bring them some water."

Joanne Bradford walked into the newly renovated guest room and looked around approvingly. "Bruce, you really went all out. This is nicer than a luxury hotel."

Thomas looked grim, sitting silently on the couch. He looked noticeably thinner than when I'd last seen him. His skin had taken on a distinct yellowish pallor.

"Dad, don't worry." Bruce sat beside him and took his hand. "I've already gotten in touch with the top hepatologist in the country, Dr. William Underwood.

"I'm taking you to see him next Monday. His appointments are almost impossible to get. Cheryl had to pull every string she had to get you in."

Once again, he casually took credit for my effort while making sure everyone knew just how valuable and difficult it was to obtain the appointment.

Thomas looked up at me, gratitude flickering in his eyes. "Thank you, Cheryl."

"No problem." I looked down, avoiding his eyes.

Joanne took both my hands in hers, her voice warm and affectionate. "Bruce told me you've been running yourself ragged over Thomas's illness. He said you've even lost weight. We feel terrible making you go through all this trouble for us."

I almost laughed.

Apparently, everyone had assumed that all those sleepless nights and frantic phone calls had been for Thomas.

"It's fine." I gently slipped my hands from hers and gave her a polite smile. "We're family."

"Exactly," Bruce chimed in. "Cheryl has always been such a devoted daughter-in-law. "Oh, Cheryl, where's the broth I asked you to make?"

"It's still warm in the kitchen."

"Go get Dad a bowl. He's been traveling all day. He must be hungry."

His command came so naturally that it barely sounded like a request. I walked into the kitchen and ladled a bowl of broth.

As I carried it out, I couldn't help thinking about the money left by Jack. A single bowl of this broth had cost enough to cover his living expenses back home for half a month.

I set the bowl in front of Thomas. "Drink it while it's hot."

"Cheryl made this especially for you," Bruce immediately added. "She used all kinds of expensive ingredients. It's supposed to be great for your recovery. She even got up at five this morning and let it simmer for three hours."

In fact, I hadn't gotten up at five.

The electric cooker had been set on a timer. But I couldn't be bothered to correct him.

Thomas took a sip and nodded. "Tastes good."

"Then have plenty." Bruce grinned before turning back to me. "And for Dad's meals over the next few days, follow the menu I sent you exactly. Don't change a thing. The doctor said diet is extremely important for patients with liver issues."

"Got it." I nodded, my compliance pleasing him immensely.

He genuinely believed he had everything under control, including me.

...

That night, after Thomas and Joanne had gone to bed, Bruce came up behind me and wrapped his arms around my waist, resting his chin on my shoulder.

"Honey, thanks for working so hard today," he murmured, his warm breath brushing against my ear. "See? My parents adore you."

I remained silent, my body going tense and rigid.

Oblivious, he continued, "Once Dad gets through treatment and recovers, let's take a trip to the Maldives. We can relax and enjoy ourselves for a while."

He kissed my cheek. His tone was warm, almost indulgent, as though a designer handbag or an expensive vacation could somehow make up for the coldness he'd shown Jack.

"Bruce." I finally spoke. That appointment with Dr. William Underwood... I made it for my dad."

"Please leave." I opened the door and held it for him. "And don't ever come back to bother my dad or me again."Bruce stood there, completely still, staring at me for a long moment. He didn't argue. He didn't plead. He didn't say another word.He simply bent down, picked up the bags of supplements he'd brought, and walked out of my life one heavy step at a time. The second the door clicked shut, I let out a long, deep breath.Jack came over and gently patted my shoulder. "Sweetheart, it's all in the past now."I nodded and leaned into his warm embrace.Yes, it was all in the past. From that day forward, whatever the future held, I would live for myself....Six months later, Jack's follow-up tests came back better than we'd hoped. His numbers had stabilized beautifully, and William told us that as long as he continued following the treatment plan and keeping up the routine, he could live a normal, healthy life.By then, Bruce and I had finalized our divorce. The division o

Thomas reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out an envelope, holding it out to me."This is a little something from me," he said, keeping his head lowered. "I'm sorry for everything that's happened over the years. Bruce failed you, and he failed your mother. Take this money and use it for Jack's treatment.""There's no need." I shook my head. "I have enough money to take care of him.""I know money can't make up for any of it," Thomas said, his voice thick with emotion. "I'm apologizing to you on behalf of that ungrateful son of mine."He bowed deeply, which surprised me immensely. In my mind, Thomas had always been a quiet, traditional man who kept his distance from family disputes. I had never imagined I'd see him humble himself like this and apologize to me."Jack was right," he continued, straightening. "We let you down. Joanne was spoiled by me and Bruce, and Bruce was spoiled rotten by her."He let out a weary sigh. "We took it for granted that once you married Bruce,

Jack was startled by the sudden commotion and instinctively clutched my hand. I gently patted the back of his hand to reassure him before turning an icy stare on Bruce."Watch your mouth, Bruce! The registration information is right there in the hospital system. If you don't believe me, ask Dr. Underwood to check."William frowned, clearly disgusted by the scene unfolding in his consultation room. He opened the registration details on his computer, scanned the screen, and then looked up at Bruce."The patient registered in our system is Jack Reese," he said evenly. "The Social Security information matches as well."The color drained from Bruce's face. He had probably assumed I was foolish enough to register the appointment under Thomas's name and then try to pull a switch at the last second."That's impossible!" he shouted, losing his mind. "She must have used some underhanded trick!""Sir, please leave," William said, his voice low and stern. "If you continue causing a disturban

My calm response was clearly the last thing Bruce had expected. He had probably imagined that I would cry, make a scene, or beg him not to leave.Instead, I stood there holding out our marriage certificate. He stared at me, looking as though he couldn't understand what had just happened."Are you serious?" he finally asked."You're the one who asked for the divorce," I said flatly. "Didn't you mean it?"Right then, Joanne lost her mind and shrieked. "Cheryl! You ungrateful girl! Have we ever treated you badly? And now you want a divorce? Do you honestly think you'll find someone better than Bruce?"She pointed at me furiously. "Don't come crawling back to us when you regret this!""I won't regret it." I turned to face her calmly. "For years, I've slaved away for your family without complaining. And what did I get in return?"The moment my dad got sick, all of you treated him like a burden. "If this is what your family is like, and this is the kind of husband Bruce is, then I'm

For a moment, the entire apartment fell silent.I could already imagine the shock and outrage on Joanne's face as Bruce's accusation sank in.Sure enough, a heartbeat later, the bedroom door flew open.Joanne stormed inside, pointing a finger at me, her whole body shaking with anger. "How could you do something like this? Do you have no conscience?"Bruce treats you like a queen, and this is how you repay him? You took a life-saving appointment and gave it to your own dad? Do you even care about this marriage? Do you care about Thomas and me at all?"Her accusations came one after another, but I didn't respond.I simply looked at her in silence before glancing past her at Thomas, whose expression was equally grim. The three of them stood before me like a jury delivering a verdict. Somehow, I had become a criminal who had committed an unforgivable offense."Joanne, take a breath." I waited until she finally paused to catch her breath. "Yes, Bruce asked me to find a specialist. Joanne's voice immediately jumped an octave. "What? How could you not have that much?"She looked genuinely confused. "Bruce told us you'd both saved quite a bit over the past few years. And don't you still have that starter condo you bought before you got married? If you sell it, you'd have enough, wouldn't you?"She had no idea that I had sold that condo years ago to pay for my mother's medical bills."I sold it a long time ago," I said."Sold it?" Joanne's eyes widened. "What did you do with all that money? That condo was worth a fortune. Why didn't you talk to Bruce before selling it?""My mother was sick," I replied. "I sold it to pay for her treatment."Joanne's mouth hung open. For several seconds, she couldn't seem to find a response. The atmosphere in the living room became painfully awkward."Why are you bringing that up now?" Thomas cleared his throat. "Cheryl did the right thing."Joanne came back to her senses and gave a sheepish grin. "Right. Of course. I was jus
