I crouched at my front door and sobbed. My mother hurriedly hugged me, a few tears dropping onto my cheeks.

"Chloe, at least you still have Mom."

After crying, I stood up, reheated the food, and cooked a birthday steak for her. To be a qualified Luna for Fred, I spent nine years studying Luna etiquette and culinary arts. I could remember the exact tastes of over twenty core Pack members. Yet, I had never cooked a single meal for my mother.

Under the dim light, my mother silently picked the rosemary off her steak. I bit my lip hard, tasting blood. For nine years, I remembered that Fred didn't eat raw garlic, and that the former Luna wouldn't touch black pepper. Yet I didn't know my own mother hated rosemary.

My phone screen lit up; it was Fred.

"I need large condoms. Bring them to the penthouse suite of the downtown hotel."

A line of explanation followed.

"This is just a trial. I'm not sleeping with anyone else."

I sneered and wiped my tears. Last week, he made me brave a rainstorm to deliver a bowl of nourishing soup, claiming Sophia had a poor appetite. When I arrived, he poured the soup into a dog bowl right in front of me. He said it was just a trial.

Last winter, he made me demonstrate my capabilities to the Elders. Afraid of looking bulky, I wore only a thin dress. Afraid of looking clumsy, I danced the Sacred Moon Ritual barefoot in the snow. After the dance, all the Elders applauded. I thought they had accepted me. But they laughed, calling me a pretty good dancer. Fred nodded, sipping his strong liquor, and told me to dance another round.

That night, I cried and asked him what I truly meant to him. He told me I was being too sensitive.

...

My mother touched my hand, glancing at my phone. I instinctively turned off the screen. She went into her room and brought out a heavily worn bank card. It held the money we had saved to buy back our old territory cabin.

"Chloe, pay him back the money we owe."

"Mom doesn't want to see you groveling in front of him anymore."

"Mom doesn't want to see you love so humbly."

I bit my lip.

"Mom, if we spend this money, we won't be able to buy back the old cabin in time."

"Dad's ashes are still buried in the yard. That is our real home."

My mother forced the card into my palm, her eyes turning red again.

"Chloe, wherever you are is our home."

I wiped my tears, called a cab, and went to that hotel. Pushing open the suite doors, Fred was lighting a cigar. Sophia waved at me with a smile, posturing entirely like the official lady of the house.

"Chloe, you're here."

I took a deep breath and looked at Fred.

"Fred, I will not keep pestering you anymore, and we shouldn't contact each other again."

  • Not Your Backup Luna   Chapter 12

Early autumn, three years later. The coastal breeze was beginning to turn chilly. That afternoon, I went to a farm outside of town to pick up a fresh batch of white roses for my mom. The mountain road back was lined with dense pine forests. I was walking hurriedly with the bouquet in my arms, not noticing something deep in the woods watching me.Until a blood-tainted Rogue scent hit me right in the face.I froze in place. It was a lone Rogue with filthy fur, its fangs still dripping with the blood of its last prey. It let out a low growl and lunged. Clutching the bouquet, I rolled down the embankment by the road. The old scar on my knee was sliced open by a branch, and blood immediately gushed out. My wolf thrashed frantically inside me, but this body hadn't fought in far too long. I dodged instinctively.I thought for sure I was going to die here this time. But the agonizing pain I anticipated never came. A massive dark shadow leaped over my head, slamming into the Rogue and sending i

Fred raised his hand, revealing the silver ring engraved with my initials on his ring finger."Chloe..." I looked at the Sheriff."He stalked me. He is a severe threat to my personal safety."I handed my phone to the Sheriff, showing the security footage of Fred tailing me home.Fred was locked in the police station's holding cell. He would be detained for three days.Leaving the station, my mother was pacing back and forth at the entrance."Mom, everything is handled."She let out a long breath and held my hand as we walked home.Three days later, Fred appeared at the flower shop's door again. In just three short days, his cheeks had deeply sunken in. The girls in the shop recognized him immediately."A man like that should know how to act like a gentleman and not ruin someone else's peaceful life! "Fred stood a short distance away like an exiled stray dog. After an unknown amount of time, he walked up to the counter."Chloe, could you brew me a cup of 'Starlight' again? "That sign

My mother chased Fred out of the flower shop. The puppy circled my ankles. I took a deep breath, forcing myself to completely ignore his existence. I was loved by many people now; I simply didn't need Fred at all.Fred stood outside the glass window. The sun was brutal, and beads of sweat rolled down his jaw. A muffled thud came from the doorway. He had collapsed onto the scorching cobblestone path. I lowered my head, focusing entirely on making latte art for a customer's coffee. No one paid him any attention.Fred struggled to his feet, gritting his teeth, and continued to stand at the door. He remained standing outside until the flower shop closed for the day. He slowly approached. I wiped down the counter, never once looking at him.Fred pointed at the last bouquet of blue baby's breath in the flower bucket."Chloe, can you sell this bouquet to me?" My mother shoved him aside with her shoulder and thrust the flowers into my arms."Sorry. These aren't for sale. This is a gift for my

The Rogue King sneered, dragging and shoving Sophia into a beat-up van. Her screams echoed across the entire square. The former Luna was so furious she crushed her wine glass in her hand, sharply ordering Fred to get out of the territory immediately.Walking down the road, Fred dialed his Lead Warrior's number."No matter the cost, find out Chloe's whereabouts as fast as possible."I followed my mother to a human town by the sea. Life passed very peacefully. I seemed unable to find the meaning of living. Every day, I curled up on the windowsill, watching the sun rise and set.A week later, my mother carried home a small cardboard box. She stroked my hair."Chloe, open it and see."I heard the sound of claws scratching against cardboard. I opened the box; inside was a pure white puppy. It rubbed against my palm, its wet nose repeatedly nudging the pulse at my wrist. My wolf lifted her head exhaustedly inside me, letting out a very soft whimper for the first time.My mother used her savi

Fred threw off her hand. The person standing here receiving the cheers of the entire Pack should be Chloe. It could only be Chloe."Take off that dress."The square instantly fell dead silent."Fred, are you crazy? What are you saying ?" The former Luna rushed over. "Sophia must complete the ceremony today. What the hell is wrong with you?"Right at that moment, the iron gates on the edge of the square were kicked open. The border Warriors flew out like kites with broken strings, crashing onto the long tables. The man dressed entirely in black walked in slowly and methodically. Behind him trailed a squad of werewolves reeking of a foul stench. He wasn't an ordinary Rogue. He was the Rogue King—the king of stray wolves whom even the Council couldn't handle, commanding the largest Rogue camp in North America. The territory in his hands wasn't on the Council's map, but it was larger than any official Pack.He slapped Sophia across the face."Stole my money and sold out my people. Did you

Chloe got up before dawn every day to hunt in the forest. Fred watched the exhaustion in her eyes. From that moment on, he was certain Chloe loved him so much she would give her life for him. No matter how many she-wolves he messed around with outside, Chloe would always wait for him right where he left her.He kept a secret from everyone. Tomorrow's engagement ceremony with Sophia was just an act. He was going to place the Luna's mark on Chloe's neck in front of all the Elders. He unlocked his screen and typed."Chloe, you must be there tomorrow. I have a huge surprise prepared for you."After hitting send, he tightly gripped the roughly woven wolf-tooth necklace in his hand. Chloe had made it herself, and it still carried the faint scent of pine from her body. By tomorrow, Chloe would definitely be crying tears of joy.The sun hadn't even risen. Fred put on his custom black suit. He tapped into Chloe's chat once again. Still no reply. He had never waited like this for a message from
