Chapter 3

作者: Pumpkin Babe
That evening, everyone started packing for college.

Three enormous pieces of custom designer luggage lay open across the living room floor while Mom filled them with stacks of brand-new clothes.

"Reuben, make sure you bring this winter coat. Norwell gets cold. And take these snacks with you. If you get hungry at night, you can share them with your roommates," she said.

Cheryl was crouched on the floor, carefully applying a screen protector to the new tablet she'd bought him.

"Reuben, I already loaded it with games and movies. You'll have something to do whenever orientation gets boring."

Reuben sat on the couch swinging his legs, beaming. "Thanks, guys."

I stepped around his three oversized suitcases and returned to my tiny room.

From under the bed, I pulled out an old gray suitcase I'd used back when I lived in the dorms during high school. The wheels had started sticking with age and squeaked every time I dragged it across the floor.

I opened my closet and folded a few faded T-shirts and pairs of jeans before placing them inside. The new charcoal-gray bedding I'd bought the day before went at the bottom.

Finally, I pulled out my Jeston University acceptance letter. I carefully tucked it inside my journal and placed both in the backpack I would keep with me.

There wasn't much else to pack. Even after I finished, the suitcase wasn't half full.

I had just zipped it shut when Phoebe pushed open the door and walked in.

Her gaze immediately fell on my half-empty and worn-out suitcase.

"Is that all you're taking?" she asked.

"Yeah."

I didn't look up.

She walked toward me and spoke as though everything had already been settled.

"I'm driving Reuben to Norwell at eight tomorrow morning. He gets carsick, so we can't crowd the car. With your mom and dad coming, there won't be any room left."

She paused for a moment, apparently trying to soften what came next. "Since you're barely bringing anything, just take an intercity bus to school. You've always been independent, so getting there alone won't be a problem, right?"

My hand stilled on the zipper as I lifted my head and quietly looked at her.

Phoebe and I had met when we were eight.

That year, Cheryl bought the last limited-edition Transformer at the toy store and gave it to Reuben. I'd gone outside afterward and sat alone in a corner of the yard, staring into space.

Phoebe found me there and handed me a piece of candy. Then, with all the seriousness an eight-year-old could muster, she said, "If no one else takes your side, I will."

For ten years, I'd held on to that childish promise as the one bright spot in an otherwise lonely childhood.

Now, it felt like nothing more than a joke.

Norwell University was only a two-hour drive from home. Going by bus meant taking a long detour and making three separate transfers, which would turn a short trip into one that took most of the day.

Even so, Phoebe had no problem sending me through all of that alone just so Reuben could have a more comfortable ride.

In the past, I would've been hurt. I would've asked how she could so easily forget the promise she'd made all those years ago.

Now, all I felt was relief.

At least she wasn't insisting that I ride with them.

"Okay," I said.

Phoebe froze at my response.

She had prepared an entire speech to placate me, only to find that there was nothing left for her to say.

After studying my calm expression for a moment, she added, "Reuben's never been this far from home before. He's always needed a little more looking after, so he really can't manage without someone there."

I finished zipping my backpack and slung it on the back of the chair.

"No need to explain. I understand," I told her.

"Good. I'm glad."

Phoebe studied me for another moment before finally relaxing and leaving the room.

"Reuben, I already put your travel pillow in the car!"

Her voice echoed from the living room, warm and gentle once again.

I closed the door behind her, shutting out the laughter and chatter from the rest of the house.

Then, I reached for my phone and opened the train app.

I'd booked a seat on the 7:00 am train to Jeston the next morning.

Once the confirmation appeared on my screen, I turned off my phone and lay down on the hard bed, closing my eyes.

It was my last night in that house.

  • Not Your Replacement, Not Your Spare   Chapter 10

A year later, during the fall of my sophomore year, I received the nation's most prestigious academic scholarship.Because of my contributions to the research project, I was also granted special permission to join one of my professor's independent projects ahead of schedule. My days were busy and fulfilling, and everything that had happened back home felt as though it belonged to another lifetime. One weekend evening, I was in the lab organizing data when my phone screen lit up.Someone in my old high school group chat had shared a screenshot of Cheryl's latest Instagram post.It was an old family photo, slightly yellowed with age. Dad, Mom, Cheryl, Phoebe, and Reuben were all smiling brightly at the camera.I was the only one missing.Cheryl had written, "If I could go back in time, I'd erase every excuse we ever made if it meant getting back the brother we pushed away."The group chat fell silent. No one said a word about the post.I stared at the photo without much emotion

After that, Mom and Dad never came looking for me again.I heard that Mom became seriously ill after returning home, while Cheryl made so many mistakes at work that she was eventually suspended.None of that had anything to do with me anymore.I devoted all my time and energy to the research project.Phoebe, however, started showing up at Jeston University more and more often. She no longer carried herself with the same superiority as before, lecturing me and acting as though she always knew what was best for me. Instead, she became cautious around me and almost painfully humble. She would wait along the route I normally took after class, holding an expensive gift. Sometimes it was a pair of limited-edition sneakers; other times, the newest laptop; and once, she even brought me the keys to a luxury condo in Jeston.Apparently, she thought those belated gestures could somehow make up for everything I'd gone without for the past 18 years.I never accepted a single thing from

Willow's arrival finally put an end to Phoebe's attempts to keep arguing with me.Phoebe stared at her with open hostility. "Who are you?" she demanded. "This is a family matter. It's none of your business."Willow didn't even bother looking directly at her. Instead, she turned toward me, her expression calm. "Is it a family matter?""I don't have a family."The answer came without the slightest hesitation.Phoebe's face immediately went ashen.I didn't spare any of them another glance. I simply turned around and followed Willow out of the backstage area.…Three days later, Mom and Dad came to Jeston with Reuben. They waited outside the building where my professor's lab was located and stopped me as I came downstairs. The moment Mom saw me, tears streamed down her face, and she rushed forward to grab my hand. But I stepped aside before she could touch me."Garrett, how can you be so cruel? You came all the way to Jeston without saying a word, and you haven't even called h

Life at Jeston University moved so quickly that I barely had time to dwell on old wounds.During the first week of classes, I took the freshman placement exam and ranked first in the entire school. Not long afterward, Willow came to find me with my results and placed a research packet written entirely in Iugrean on my desk."The professor was impressed by the way you analyze problems. He wants to know if you'd be interested in joining his research team as an assistant."She adjusted her gold-rimmed glasses, her tone as cool and matter-of-fact as ever."Just keep in mind that the workload is intense. You won't have weekends," Willow added.I took the packet without the slightest hesitation. "Hard work has never bothered me," I assured her.…Two weeks later, Jeston University held a freshman academic showcase, and I was selected to represent the incoming class in the final presentation of the program. The entire report had to be delivered in Iugrean. The auditorium was pack

The sun beat down mercilessly at Norwell University's main entrance.Phoebe and Cheryl stood beneath the shade of a tree, both looking increasingly frustrated."Where could he possibly have gone?"Cheryl kicked a pebble off the sidewalk in irritation. "He barely had any money with him, and that old suitcase didn't even have enough stuff to last him!"Phoebe forced herself to stay calm."Don't panic. If he enrolled somewhere, his high school counselor should have a record of which college received his final transcript. Call the school and find out where he committed."That seemed to snap Cheryl out of her daze. She immediately pulled out her phone and called my former homeroom teacher. The woman sounded both surprised and delighted when she answered. "Cheryl, are you looking for Garrett? Isn't he with the family? I was just about to call and congratulate everyone. "That boy really knows how to keep a low profile. He had the highest score in all of Jarrow and never said a word.

  • Not Your Replacement, Not Your Spare   Chapter 5

Jeston University's freshman check-in area had been set up at Southridge Square, where long welcome banners stretched across the plaza and student volunteers in different colored vests moved through the crowds.I pulled my worn old suitcase behind me and made my way to the School of Finance's registration counter. The student handling check-in wore rimless glasses and a simple white shirt. Her expression was cool and composed, and even as she looked down at the roster in front of her, her clenched jaw made it apparent that she wasn't interested in small talk."Acceptance letter and ID, please."Her voice matched her expression. It was polite but strictly business.I handed my documents over to her.She glanced at the name on my acceptance letter, then looked at her computer screen. Her fingers paused over the keyboard for a moment before she lifted her head and studied me through her glasses."Garrett Whitaker? The top scorer in Jarrow?"Several upperclassmen who had been help
