Chapter 2

作者: Pumpkin Babe
Lying on top of my admissions packet was a photocopy of Reuben's acceptance letter from Norwell University.

Move-in day for both schools was coming.

I picked up the photocopy, crumpled it into a ball, and tossed it into the trash.

The next day was Saturday, and my family held a college send-off party at home. By early morning, the living room was already packed with relatives who had come to congratulate Reuben.

"Reuben, that's amazing. Norwell is such a prestigious school. You're officially a college student now."

"Patrick's one lucky man. His son's handsome and smart."

Compliments came from every corner of the room.

Mom couldn't stop smiling as she led Reuben around to greet everyone. Dressed in a brand-new designer suit, he looked every bit like the golden child everyone doted on.

Aunt Mathilde was munching on pretzels when she suddenly glanced over at me, sitting alone in the corner.

"How did Garrett do?" she asked.

The living room went quiet for a moment.

Mom's smile stiffened before she waved the question away.

"Garrett got into Norwell, too. His grades are usually pretty average, so he did better than expected this time. It actually worked out perfectly. The boys will be at the same school, and Garrett can help look after Reuben."

Aunt Mathilde nodded.

"That makes sense. Garrett's always been dependable. He's exactly the kind of older brother Reuben needs."

I sat in an armchair with my head lowered, quietly drinking a glass of water without correcting either of them.

For my final college entrance exam, I'd stopped deliberately holding myself back.

I finished the test half an hour early and worked through every major problem as thoroughly as I could, giving each one the strongest solution possible.

When the scores came out, the entire family crowded around the computer to check Reuben's results.

The moment they saw that he'd scored just high enough to get into Norwell University, everyone erupted in celebration.

Cheryl even popped a bottle of champagne.

Not one of them asked what I'd scored.

Rather than ruin their excitement, I'd later made a copy of Reuben's acceptance letter and left it on my desk.

They hadn't even bothered to look at it closely. They simply assumed that Norwell was the best school I could have gotten into, just like Reuben.

Halfway through the party, Phoebe opened the door and walked in carrying two beautifully wrapped gift boxes.

"Phoebe, you're here! Come in and sit down," Mom greeted her warmly.

Phoebe went straight to Reuben and handed him one of the boxes, which bore the logo of a luxury brand.

"Congratulations on getting into college, Reuben."

His face lit up as he opened it.

Inside was an expensive custom mechanical watch. The silver face caught the light with a sleek metallic gleam. It was an understated piece yet unmistakably luxurious.

"Wow, this is awesome! Thanks, Phoebe!"

Reuben immediately put it on and proudly showed it off to everyone.

Cheryl gave Phoebe a knowing look. "Phoebe, that watch couldn't have been cheap. You really went all out."

Phoebe smiled. "As long as Reuben likes it, that's all that matters."

Then, she turned and walked over to me, holding out the smaller box.

"Garrett, this one's for you."

I set down my glass and accepted it.

The packaging was cheap and plain, without even a sticker keeping the box closed. When I opened it, I found an ordinary mystery figurine from a collection that had been popular two years ago.

"I passed a collectible toy store and saw this," Phoebe said casually. "I remembered that you used to like these trinkets."

I stared at the plastic figurine.

She had remembered wrong.

Reuben was the one who liked mystery collectibles.

Two years ago, he'd bought an entire case in an attempt to get the rare Chase figure. Once he'd opened every box, he left all the figurines scattered across the floor, and I'd simply picked them up and put them away for him.

Somehow, Phoebe had seen that and decided I was the one who liked them.

"Thanks," I said calmly as I set the box back on the table.

Phoebe seemed dissatisfied with my lack of enthusiasm, and her brows drew together slightly.

"Garrett, are you upset because Reuben's gift was more expensive?" she questioned. "You've always been the mature one. Don't start keeping score over something this trivial."

I looked up at her self-righteous expression.

"I'm not keeping score. In fact, I don't care what kind of gift I get from you."

Phoebe froze for a moment, apparently caught off guard by my response.

In the past, whenever she showed even the slightest favoritism toward Reuben, I would fall silent for hours before retreating to my room and dealing with the disappointment alone.

Once the party ended, the relatives gradually headed home, leaving me behind to clean up the mess.

Phoebe helped Reuben carry all his expensive gifts to his room while I took a stack of greasy plates into the kitchen.

As I passed the trash can, I stopped.

I picked up the unopened mystery figurine and tossed it. It landed with a soft thud among the leftover food and dirty napkins.

Without looking back, I walked straight out of the kitchen.

  • Not Your Replacement, Not Your Spare   Chapter 10

A year later, during the fall of my sophomore year, I received the nation's most prestigious academic scholarship.Because of my contributions to the research project, I was also granted special permission to join one of my professor's independent projects ahead of schedule. My days were busy and fulfilling, and everything that had happened back home felt as though it belonged to another lifetime. One weekend evening, I was in the lab organizing data when my phone screen lit up.Someone in my old high school group chat had shared a screenshot of Cheryl's latest Instagram post.It was an old family photo, slightly yellowed with age. Dad, Mom, Cheryl, Phoebe, and Reuben were all smiling brightly at the camera.I was the only one missing.Cheryl had written, "If I could go back in time, I'd erase every excuse we ever made if it meant getting back the brother we pushed away."The group chat fell silent. No one said a word about the post.I stared at the photo without much emotion

After that, Mom and Dad never came looking for me again.I heard that Mom became seriously ill after returning home, while Cheryl made so many mistakes at work that she was eventually suspended.None of that had anything to do with me anymore.I devoted all my time and energy to the research project.Phoebe, however, started showing up at Jeston University more and more often. She no longer carried herself with the same superiority as before, lecturing me and acting as though she always knew what was best for me. Instead, she became cautious around me and almost painfully humble. She would wait along the route I normally took after class, holding an expensive gift. Sometimes it was a pair of limited-edition sneakers; other times, the newest laptop; and once, she even brought me the keys to a luxury condo in Jeston.Apparently, she thought those belated gestures could somehow make up for everything I'd gone without for the past 18 years.I never accepted a single thing from

Willow's arrival finally put an end to Phoebe's attempts to keep arguing with me.Phoebe stared at her with open hostility. "Who are you?" she demanded. "This is a family matter. It's none of your business."Willow didn't even bother looking directly at her. Instead, she turned toward me, her expression calm. "Is it a family matter?""I don't have a family."The answer came without the slightest hesitation.Phoebe's face immediately went ashen.I didn't spare any of them another glance. I simply turned around and followed Willow out of the backstage area.…Three days later, Mom and Dad came to Jeston with Reuben. They waited outside the building where my professor's lab was located and stopped me as I came downstairs. The moment Mom saw me, tears streamed down her face, and she rushed forward to grab my hand. But I stepped aside before she could touch me."Garrett, how can you be so cruel? You came all the way to Jeston without saying a word, and you haven't even called h

Life at Jeston University moved so quickly that I barely had time to dwell on old wounds.During the first week of classes, I took the freshman placement exam and ranked first in the entire school. Not long afterward, Willow came to find me with my results and placed a research packet written entirely in Iugrean on my desk."The professor was impressed by the way you analyze problems. He wants to know if you'd be interested in joining his research team as an assistant."She adjusted her gold-rimmed glasses, her tone as cool and matter-of-fact as ever."Just keep in mind that the workload is intense. You won't have weekends," Willow added.I took the packet without the slightest hesitation. "Hard work has never bothered me," I assured her.…Two weeks later, Jeston University held a freshman academic showcase, and I was selected to represent the incoming class in the final presentation of the program. The entire report had to be delivered in Iugrean. The auditorium was pack

The sun beat down mercilessly at Norwell University's main entrance.Phoebe and Cheryl stood beneath the shade of a tree, both looking increasingly frustrated."Where could he possibly have gone?"Cheryl kicked a pebble off the sidewalk in irritation. "He barely had any money with him, and that old suitcase didn't even have enough stuff to last him!"Phoebe forced herself to stay calm."Don't panic. If he enrolled somewhere, his high school counselor should have a record of which college received his final transcript. Call the school and find out where he committed."That seemed to snap Cheryl out of her daze. She immediately pulled out her phone and called my former homeroom teacher. The woman sounded both surprised and delighted when she answered. "Cheryl, are you looking for Garrett? Isn't he with the family? I was just about to call and congratulate everyone. "That boy really knows how to keep a low profile. He had the highest score in all of Jarrow and never said a word.

  • Not Your Replacement, Not Your Spare   Chapter 5

Jeston University's freshman check-in area had been set up at Southridge Square, where long welcome banners stretched across the plaza and student volunteers in different colored vests moved through the crowds.I pulled my worn old suitcase behind me and made my way to the School of Finance's registration counter. The student handling check-in wore rimless glasses and a simple white shirt. Her expression was cool and composed, and even as she looked down at the roster in front of her, her clenched jaw made it apparent that she wasn't interested in small talk."Acceptance letter and ID, please."Her voice matched her expression. It was polite but strictly business.I handed my documents over to her.She glanced at the name on my acceptance letter, then looked at her computer screen. Her fingers paused over the keyboard for a moment before she lifted her head and studied me through her glasses."Garrett Whitaker? The top scorer in Jarrow?"Several upperclassmen who had been help
