Chapter 1

The second that massive, terrifying needle slid out of my spine, I collapsed like a popped balloon.

Two bodyguards quickly grabbed my limp arms and roughly dumped me onto the cold floor. I curled into a ball, shaking uncontrollably.

My brother, Wallace Hayden, loomed over me, blocking out the fluorescent lights.

"Cut the act, Mary!" he snapped. "Seriously? We paid for you to sit around eating and drinking in a psych ward for three years, and now you're acting like a little marrow extraction is killing you?

"You're spineless! Your foster parents were right. You're just a lazy, manipulative brat."

The insults hit me with the familiar sting they had for the last three years, squeezing the air from my lungs. I opened my mouth to tell him I wasn't faking.

Pancreatic cancer was the king of cancer. By the time it was discovered, it was already terminal, and it progressed incredibly fast.

Lately, the pain was so bad I couldn't even sit or lie down normally. And I hadn't eaten in two days just so I could save enough pocket change for those two ice cream cones.

I only got a few bites in before my mother, Beryl Hayden, smashed them out of my hand with her purse, leaving them to melt into a puddle on the pavement.

I regretted buying them. I shouldn't have been so greedy.

Before a word could form, a blinding spasm of pain ripped through my stomach. It was starting again. Trembling, I fumbled through my shirt pocket and managed to pull out a painkiller.

But before it could reach my lips, Wallace snatched it from my fingers.

"What's this? What games are you playing now?" He stared at the pill, his expression flickering between suspicion and confusion.

Right then, the foster daughter, Chantal Hayden, came skipping down the hall, lifting the hem of her princess dress.

"Oh, Wallace! I just heard the nurses talking. They said Mary found out I was sick and decided to fake being sick too, just to get everyone's attention. I can't believe she even brought props to make it look real. That's pathetic."

The veins on Wallace's forehead bulged. He slammed the pill onto the floor and ground it into powder under his shoe. "Mary, you really are a lost cause. Disgusting!"

A broken sob slipped out of my throat. "No..."

That was my last pill, saved for the very end. Every time the pain got bad enough to make me scream, I would just hold it tightly in my hand, forcing myself to endure it.

But Wallace turned his back on me, completely freezing me out. He placed a gentle arm around Chantal, his voice instantly turning indulgent.

"Let's go, Chantal," he said softly. "I booked the rooftop at the Citadel tonight. Just us. Order whatever you want. Waste it all if you feel like it."

Chantal's face lit up immediately. "Wow! Booking that place costs $50,000 a night! Wallace, you're the best!"

"That's just pocket change," Wallace chuckled. "Dad already had his personal shopper send the newest jewelry collection to our private room."

Their voices faded as they walked away. I collapsed against the icy floor, the tears finally pouring out.

Why did Chantal get to waste a lavish dinner without a second thought? But when I spent less than a dollar on two ice cream cones I'd never even tasted, it made me greedy and spoiled?

I was the one who shared their blood. I was the real daughter.

...

Once the worst of the pain passed, I dragged myself back to my "home" under the highway bridge. Licking the faint trace of leftover sweetness from my lips, I slowly fell asleep.

The next morning, I woke up feeling strangely energized. I grabbed my burlap sack as usual, getting ready to go collect plastic bottles.

It might be a final burst of energy, but my head was clear. I wanted to make a little more cash and had my eye on a biscuit tin at a thrift shop.

Someone told me the cheapest urn at the crematorium cost 200 dollars. There was no way I'd ever have that kind of money.

I had just hoisted the bag over my shoulder when Wallace materialized out of nowhere, looking annoyed. "The marrow match was a 100% success. You can come home now.

"Faking sick, sleeping under a bridge, digging through trash... You went through all this drama just to get our attention, didn't you? Well, congratulations. Aren't you thrilled?"

"The truth is, Miss Hayden gave me a fortune and threatened the safety of my family," the doctor said, his legs shaking. "She forced me to forge the medical records and stage the entire emergency."In fact, she's completely healthy. She never needed a marrow transplant. She told me she wanted to give the family a surprise and to test who you all cared about more."The truth was laid bare in all its ugliness. Every ounce of color vanished from Chantal's face, and her knees gave out, sending her collapsing into a heap on the hardwood floor.Wallace began to laugh—low at first, then louder and more manic, until tears rolled down his face."A surprise?" he howled, his eyes wide and vacant. "A test? What a beautiful, perfect test!"He turned to the bodyguards, his voice dropping into a lethal, ice-cold snap. "Take her to the asylum. Tell the director to give her their most 'attentive' hospitality. She is to stay inside those walls for the rest of her life.""No!" Chantal let out a sub

The other day, the head bodyguard had received Wallace's text: [No need to bring Mary back.]He had misunderstood, assuming Wallace meant they shouldn't even bother bringing back my corpse.Later, the Haydens had gone abroad on vacation. Out of caution, the bodyguard had quietly placed my body in a freezer at the crematorium.By the time Beryl and Isiah arrived, Wallace had already confessed the entire truth to them on the drive over. The heavy metal door of the cold storage room swung open, and an attendant wheeled out a gurney covered in a white sheet.Wallace's hands shook so violently he couldn't grasp the fabric. The attendant reached down and pulled the sheet back for them. The moment they saw my pale, emaciated face, they all collapsed to the ground.Beryl let out a blood-curdling, jagged shriek. It wasn't the sharp, arrogant scolding she had used against me; it was a soul-crushing wail of pure agony."Mary, my child! I was wrong. I shouldn't have hit you or sent you awa

A woman's shrill screeched from behind the thin apartment door."Ever since that useless brat left, the dishes have been piling up! The floors are so disgusting you can't even step inside!"We never should have taken that money from the Haydens and sent her away. She could have been working two jobs right now to bring in extra cash.""What's the point of whining about it now?" a man's rough voice snapped back. "You're the one who panicked. You were so terrified that the Haydens would find out how we treated her and sue us, or take back the payoff money."You just had to go behind her back and talk trash to her parents. Now what? They despised her and kicked her out. If you hadn't opened your mouth, we could have squeezed them for way more cash by now!""Are you seriously blaming me now?" the woman yelled. "When we locked her in the basement and starved her for three days, you didn't seem to have a problem with it! You're just pissed because you lost all our money gambling again!"

Underneath the coat lay a notebook carefully wrapped in a cheap plastic bag. Beside it was a vial.Wallace's heart raced. He squatted down, his fingers stiff as he peeled away the plastic and opened the stained notebook. The handwriting inside was neat and delicate, every stroke written with painful care.[Date: X, Sunny.[I'm so happy. This must be the best day of my life. I finally have parents and a brother who love me. I'm going to document my new life starting today. My stomach hurts so bad, though, and my hands are shaking from exhaustion.][Date: X, Cloudy.[It's so weird. Why does Chantal's jewelry keep showing up in my room? I swear I haven't touched a single piece.][Date: X, Sunny.[I've made up my mind. I'm going to study as hard as I can. They love good kids like Chantal, so I'll be a good kid too. When Chantal proudly bragged about being at the top of her class, I was so jealous.[I used to be number one too, before my foster parents made me drop out. They said p

Right then, a loud cheer erupted from the doctor's office, drowning out the voice on the line."She's cured! Chantal is going to be okay!"The door flew open, and Beryl rushed out, tears streaming down her face. She threw her arms around Wallace, sobbing with relief. "The doctor said it was a miracle! Chantal is blessed! The sickness just went away on its own!"The sudden wave of euphoria wiped the phone call from Wallace's mind. He hung up immediately and hurried into the room.Chantal was sitting on the examination chair, looking pale but flashing him a peace sign. "Told you I'd recover. Luck has always been by my side."Isiah stood off to the side, a rare smile breaking across his stern face. The attending doctor adjusted his glasses, a slight stiffness in his voice. "Congratulations. Miss Hayden's case is highly unusual, but it's not entirely without precedent. The lesions spontaneously vanished. For all intents and purposes, it's a medical miracle.""This is great!" Wallac

Wallace stared at the paper, his face twisting into a scowl."Terminal pancreatic cancer? Mary, you'd seriously forge a medical diagnosis just to avoid saving Chantal? Or did you think this would trick us into letting you back into the house?"He tossed it aside with a look of pure contempt. "You aren't even afraid of jinxing yourself. There hasn't been a single case of cancer in the Hayden family for three generations. Next time you lie, at least make it believable."I couldn't even answer him. A metallic sweetness surged up my throat, and I choked, spitting a mouthful of dark blood onto the floor.Beryl gasped, instinctively taking a step toward me. Isiah's brow furrowed, his eyes flickering with doubt. But Chantal quickly chimed in, her voice sweet and innocent. "Don't let her fool you. You can buy anything online these days. There are blood packs. You bite them, and they burst."Turning to me, she added, "It looks so realistic. Mary, you'll really pull out all the stops to do
