Chapter 10

Autor: Paisley Doze
When I returned to the Transit Space, I felt like a child who had done something wrong, waiting for a reprimand.

"I'm sorry," I said softly. "I caused you so much trouble."

For some reason, NODE, which was usually cold and indifferent, let out a sigh. Then it opened a screen and replayed everything that happened after I left.

When I returned to the Transit Space, I felt like a child who had done something wrong, waiting for a reprimand."I'm sorry," I said softly. "I caused you so much trouble."For some reason, NODE, which was usually cold and indifferent, let out a sigh. Then it opened a screen and replayed everything that happened after I left.Aaron pressed his fingers to my pulse, then shook his head at Maxwell with quiet regret.Maxwell lifted my body onto a gurney, rushed into the department, and returned with a syringe. He drove the needle into his own vein and began drawing blood as if his life depended on it."My blood can save Cass," he kept repeating. "My blood can save her."I watched the screen, my emotions tangled and heavy. It was obvious that Maxwell had lost his mind."Sedate him now!" Aaron ordered, snapping back into his professional calm.Grief flickered across his eyes. After a long moment, he looked at my body and gently covered it with a white sheet.Josephine stood frozen,

Maxwell's eyes reddened in an instant."How would you know that?" His voice trembled. "You were unconscious back then… No. Wait."He stared at me, breathing unevenly. "You're not Cass. I've felt it these past few days. The way you look at me is completely unfamiliar."Cass loves me. She would forgive me. I already know I was wrong."She wouldn't give up on a life so easily. Back in the lab, she even insisted on keeping those test rabbits alive."His hands dragged through his hair as frustration broke through his composure. "Who are you?"At that moment, everything I had lived through over the years felt like a cruel joke. I closed my eyes and said nothing."Cass, I'm sorry. I'm sorry," he blurted out. "I was talking nonsense just now. I don't want the child anymore. I just want you. Please stay with me. Don't leave."It was the first time I saw Maxwell desperate, with his pride stripped away.I was about to open my eyes when his phone began ringing repeatedly. He rejected the

"Maxie, where are you? Can you come stay with me? The doctor said I might never be able to hold a paintbrush again.""Go on," NODE said flatly, pushing him away.A flicker of conflict crossed Maxwell's face. Then, as if he had finally reached a decision, his expression hardened and his tone turned cold. "Josie, I've already spoken with the hospital. If anything comes up, talk to Dr. Quinn. Listen to him. You'll be fine."Cass isn't in good health either. For now, I want to stay with her."I stared at him, stunned. This was the first time Maxwell had ever refused Josephine. Ever since she returned, I had always been the one left behind. On our wedding anniversary, he heard that Josephine slipped on the stairs and left before finishing dinner."Josie doesn't have anyone with her. I'll go check on her," he said. He didn't come back all night. The next morning, I saw Josephine post a photo of them talking late into the night by candlelight. He left me alone in a couples' restauran

The male doctor who had saved NODE the last time stepped inside. "Dr. Gallagher, the plasma has arrived. You can prep for surgery."His voice carried a chill. When his gaze fell on my wound, his brow creased."You again? How did this happen?" He frowned more deeply. "For most people, this would heal on its own. For you, a cut like this could be fatal.""I'm sorry, Dr. Finch," Maxwell said quickly, cold sweat breaking out. "I'll take her to get treatment right away."Last time, if that doctor had not arrived in time, the consequences would have been unimaginable."You should hurry up and operate on that girl," the doctor said, casting Maxwell a faint, mocking smile.NODE lowered her head, considered the situation for two seconds, then followed the doctor out of the ward. It was the optimal choice. One more second in that room, and even I would feel sick.Fortunately, the wound was treated promptly. After glucose supplementation, no serious complications developed.I glanced at t

The nurse seemed to realize she had said too much. Her face stiffened, and she hurried away.NODE studied Maxwell in silence."Cass, I thought you already used your blood to save me two years ago," Maxwell said hoarsely. "That was an emergency. I did not think it through. You know how afraid I am of sharp objects. I needed to stay clear-headed so I could operate on Josie."I looked at him, and disappointment rose until it filled me completely.Back then, Maxwell had suffered a serious car accident and lost a dangerous amount of blood. I was the one who saved him, giving him a massive transfusion. That was when I developed hemophilia. The truth was that all three of us were with Rh-negative blood.Hemophilia had never been mine to begin with. It had been his. He simply never knew. His condition was mild. Without severe bleeding, it posed no threat to his life. That was why he had remained unaware all these years.Later, to fulfill his dream of becoming a doctor, I begged the Ne

That night, NODE rose without warning."Your body needs to take its medication," she said quietly. She picked up a cup and left the bedroom. The door opened. In the living room, Josephine sat with tears in her eyes while Maxwell gently changed her bandages. His movements were careful and practiced, and the tenderness in his gaze never faded. The moment Maxwell saw NODE, his body stiffened.I saw it clearly. I also saw provocation flicker through Josephine's eyes.NODE behaved as if nothing stood there at all. She poured the water, turned around, and walked straight back into the bedroom, as though the two of them did not exist.I glanced at Maxwell's frozen expression and released a silent, bitter laugh before retreating inward.-The next morning, Maxwell appeared with deep shadows beneath his eyes. "Cass, things aren't what you think."NODE nodded absently.Something dulled in Maxwell's eyes. Without warning, he pulled NODE into his arms. "Cass, just listen to me, okay?"
