Chapter 6

last update publish date: 2025-11-10 16:57:13

When I woke up again I had no idea how long I had been out. This wasn’t helped by not having any windows. I could have been here hours or it could be days. My suspicion is that they do this purposefully to disorientate people.

My head throbs and my mouth and throat are dry and I struggle to breathe at first. Then I realise what woke me up. Someone else had entered the room and was looking over me.

A young man, not much older than myself is looking down at me with concern etched on his face. I’m not sure how to react at first.

“Hello” he said and just continued looking down at me.

“Can I help you?” I ask him. Only after I say it do I think about what a weird question that is coming from a girl strapped to a bed. The guy looks at me perplexed and then bursts out into laughter.

“Sorry “ he said calming down “but I’ve been doing this job for like a year and that’s the first time anyone has reacted by asking how they can help me”

I just glare at him “I am glad my misery is funny to you” I state.

“I’m sorry.” He says more sombrely now. “Here let me help you.” He comes forward and unstraps me from the bed and then helps me slowly sit up.

“Gently does it” he says “Between the sedatives and wolfsbane you’re going to be spinning for a while”. He hands me a glass of water. From my prone position I hadn’t seen that there was a trolley with him. On it is a plate of food and a water jug. I take the water he offered and chug it down.

“I am Aiden” he introduces himself “I am an orderly here, I will bring you meals and meds basically.” He says passing me the plate. I want to tell him to fuck off and where he can shove his food but my stomach does a lurch to tell me its been ages since we last ate and whatever is under the cover smells good. Removing the cover it’s roast beef and vegetables.

My stomach makes another noise at me to tell me that we are not passing this up. I wonder if it’s poisoned and then realise they just injected me with pure wolfsbane in front of me. Why would they need to hide poison in my food?

Aiden must be able to sense what I am thinking. “Do you want me to taste it first for you, prove it’s not poisoned” he offers with a cheeky grin

“No I am good thanks” I say picking up the fork and tucking in. I hate to admit it but it is good food.

“Some of their treatment methods may be unorthodox” Aiden says frowning “ but it’s still a 4 star place to stay, when they let you out of the room, there is a games room, a sauna, masseuses, tanning beds and a pool.”

Dropping his voice lower he check no one is by the door “I’m sorry for what you will go through I will help where I can” and before I can register he said it he starts walking to the door, a smile on his face telling me he will be back for the plate in a bit and locking the door behind him.

That last sentence sours the taste of the food in my mouth and makes me feel like what I have already eaten may come back up. Done with the food I put the plate down on the tray and try standing up.

I am like Bambi trying to walk on the ice. My legs go skittering off in two different directions and I land on the floor. Artemis laughs in my head. I wonder if I will ever get used to that. Graceful, she says. Are you sure you are part wolf?

Does your inner wolf have an off switch I ask her. She laughs again. No, you and me 24/7. Despite what I just said this fills me with a warmth as I try and get back up from the space on the floor where I have collapsed in a heap.

Back on the bed the reality of where I am starts to settle in. Everything is unknown now. Am I here to be treated? Will I just be talking to a psychiatrist and medicated? The way the welcome wagon has been rolled out for me so far gives me the distinct impression I am here for anything but my own health or to be treated for anything.

It only took ten minutes for me to get my answer, and I am instantly filled with regret for my curiosity. Two large men come in. They look like they could be related. Both in dark t shirts and jeans I would say they have distinct 'nightclub bouncer' vibes and they are not afraid to manhandle me.

They force me into a wheelchair and strap me in. No matter how much I thrash against them I am so tiny compared to these burley werewolves I must be like a doll to them. They ignore the fuss I make and wheel me down a long corridor past plain, white locked doors until we reach a big stainless steel one.

As they push me into this room my adrenaline and my fear spike. It’s a steel box and in the middle of the room is a surgical table. Not a good sign. Several nurses and doctors with masks and gowns on are stood around waiting for me by the looks of it.

The burley wolves take me from the chair and strap me onto the table. They strap my body and legs so I have no movement whatsoever and my screams or protest are falling on deaf ears.

“What the fuck are you doing!” I scram “Let me go, you can’t do this”

“Oh we can” says one of the masked doctors and I realise he is the man with the syringe from earlier. “We can and we will and you will be awake for every moment of it princess so settle down.” Between what he says, and the use of the term of endearment Atari is howling in protest in my head but she can’t so anything to help. She is still weak from healing me earlier.

“Oh Nova” he says leaning closer, I can now see the light glinting off the scalpel in his hand. “I’ve always wanted to work on a wolf like you and that stupid Alpha and his son had no clue he was just part of your mother’s plan to send you to me” I can’t see his mouth to see if he is smile but his voice is dripping with undisguised joy and enthusiasm.

“She’s been promising me a special wolf to play with for so long, I almost gave up hope” he said looming closer. I think I am going to have a heart attack, it is straining so hard in my chest and “but here you are princess. Let’s have some fun”

  • Nova   Chapter 96

Nova’s POVOnce tea and cake are consumed and everyone’s revived a bit from the drive I start to feel nervous. I’ve been trying not to get my hopes up and trying not to think about what the potential of all this is, but if this works, I will have a mum and dad. I know I have been making constant half joking comments about having them back to do their jobs but that’s because I don’t want to admit the truth. After being rejected by the only family I ever had, what if they don’t want me. what if they think I am broken or too much hard work? What if they’re not the people everyone keeps telling me they are.Until this year I’ve lived a life of disappointment. I just don’t know if I am ready to face anymore. No, I tell myself, I cant think like that. I am going to wake them up, tell them their missing daughter is home and she’s going to make them into grandparents. Positive thinking. Manifest destiny.Tilly and Lyle have come to an uneasy truce, which basically consists of them not talking

  • Nova   Chapter 95

Nova’s POVI’m currently watching the weirdest standoff I’ve ever seen. What I didn’t know when I invited Professor Moss and Tilly to meet in person is that they already knew each other. I really didn’t expect to find out the 5 foot 8 man who dresses like everyday is Sherlock Holmes cosplay day would be the ex mate of Tall, willowy witch.I am less surprised that they separated because not even being fated mates could make them capable of saying a civil word to each other. The gist I am getting with them both trying to explain to me why they loath each other and argue with each other about the details, is that he thinks she is a flake and doesn’t take anything seriously enough and has no respect for his profession or his beliefs.Tilly thinks he is a stuck-up, narrow-minded curmudgeon and has no respect for anything outside of his own tiny set of beliefs and he disrespected her witch clan at their mating ceremony and never apologised for it. He disagrees he did anything wrong and thin

  • Nova   Chapter 94

Novas’s POVLuckily for us, Leo only needed an overnight stay at the hospital. The next morning I was there bright and early collecting him and bringing him home to the palace, where I was going to enforce a strict regime of bed rest for the next few days. He didn’t seem inclined to fight me on this so my wolf and I were happy.I took him to our bedroom and tucked him in while he pouted at me and informed me he was not a child. I pointed out that he only had about 7 months left of being the sole focus of my attention and should lap it up while he can. That stopped his ungrateful grumbling while he let me spoon feed him soup. Okay maybe I was babying him but my instincts to protect and nurture were going wild.During the day my brothers came in to check on us and to keep us up to date on what was happening. They looked like they had had about an hour of sleep between them in the last 24 hours and the second Peter sat down on the cosy sofa in my room his eyelids were already drooping.

  • Nova   Chapter 93

Nova’s POVAs I sat in an ugly, over washed hospital gown I was realising my mistake had been calling the arrests anti-climactic. Now I was sat here holding Leo’s hand while he lay unconscious in the bed before me, willing him to wake the hell up so I could tell him off and then give him a shock that may cause him to pass out again. My entire right arm ached from where that bastard Montague got a good grip on it with his jaws before the warrior next to me knocked him flying. He’d managed to get a chunk out of my arm before he was forced to let go and though it would heal as good as new, it was currently sore and itchy as hell, while it tried to knit back together. Not that I even felt it at the time. The moment I turned and saw Leo going down like a sack of potatoes I filtered out everything else, getting on my knees next to him and holding him until my brothers peeled me off him to come to the hospital. Someone had tried to put us into separate ambulances but I wasn’t going for it an

  • Nova   Chapter 92

Leo’s POVAs we climbed into the SUVs, lined up outside the palace, I looked at Nova and a surge of pride hit me. Her deep red hair was in a no-nonsense ponytail that swings as she walks. She walks with purpose and a determined stride. I loved the confidence this woman had gained in such a short time. The difference between Nova hiding in my father’s kitchens and the Nova about to walk into battle was unfathomable. I did wonder if I should be concerned about how much she seemed to be enjoying herself right now. But I loved seeing the spark in her blue eyes, that at one time, I thought I had killed forever.Sitting next to me in the SUV she reached across and took my hand. I would never get tired of feeling her smooth skin slide against mine and the reassuring warmth of having her this close to me.Personally I didn’t want her to come today. I didn’t like the idea of my mate being in danger and I wasn’t keen walking her into it myself. My wolf was extra antsy about the idea but couldn

  • Nova   Chapter 91

Nova’s POVI wasn’t sure how I was feeling anymore. Should it be relief that a plan was in motion or anxiety that if this goes wrong there was no plan B? Should I be worried for the safety of the people involved in the plan, I gathered most of them were part of this criminal underworld I never knew about, but they were still people and if my brothers did what they were planning, they were going to be my people to worry about. It was this anxiety that had Leo finding me in the palace kitchen at 3 am stuffing my face with chocolate chip muffins, like they may be some kind of cure to my current feelings. I am sat looking at the view of the grounds from the big kitchen window when he walks up behind me and wraps his arms around my shoulder and kisses me on top of my head.“Worrying about Operation Elder?” Leo asks as he takes a seat next to me.“I’m more worried about what a shit name it got to be honest” I mutter around another bite of muffin. I look at Leo and smile gently. “Nah, I just

Nova’s POV I never really thought I would be 18 and stood in my closet trying to choose an outfit that said “I am adult and capable enough to participate in trials of traitors, despite being a serial kidnap victim.” But here I am.I had to be at the Central Courts in one hour for the first day of t

Alex’s POVWell, the good news is it seems, statistically only three in four elders are corrupt. So it’s not all of them. Bad news is we are clearly going to have to arrest all the elders and probably look at a new system of governance as ours has become so polluted and twisted. How did it all get
