Chapter 1

Author: Space Journey
My flight was booked. Departure was in two hours.

This time, I was going to make them pay!

At that very moment, Cora Talbot was picking out swimsuits.

She'd already invited Rhys Barron to an ice lake in the Frostmark, determined to steal the groom out from under me and ruin my wedding.

A message popped up on my phone.

It was Rhys.

"Mae, I've got a business trip out of town coming up, so I can't make it to your dress fitting.

"Don't be mad. I'll bring you back a present."

I let out a cold laugh.

He was obviously heading to the Frostmark to ogle a pretty girl in a swimsuit, but he had to call it a business trip.

Why bother?

"What a coincidence. I can't make the fitting either."

I picked up my car keys and that plane ticket to Solvarra, a smile curling my lips.

"I'm going sunbathing."

Mom stopped me on my way out.

"Mae, your sister's craving your ribs and lemon-butter salmon today. Don't go out. Stay home and get everything ready."

I followed her gaze.

Every ingredient was already laid out.

All that was missing was me at the stove.

In my last life, Cora had deliberately put in colored contacts while I was cooking and "accidentally" jabbed her own eye.

Instantly, I couldn't open my eyes, and a pan of sizzling oil came crashing down on me.

She paused the sensory swap just in time.

My legs—legs I'd danced ballet on for ten years—nearly had to be amputated.

Just thinking about it turned my whole body cold.

"Can't the housekeeper make it?"

Dad, who'd been reading the paper in the living room, flared up instantly.

He threw the newspaper down and stormed over to lecture me.

"Maeve!

"Cora's lived a good life in this house for twenty years. You think she's short one meal? She wants your cooking because she wants to get close to you!

"Do you know how many times Cora has cried behind our backs, trying so hard to accept you? She's terrified we'll stop loving her now that you're home!

"If Cora wants your cooking, you cook it, no arguments! So what if you're our biological daughter? In my house, the good daughter is the one who knows how to behave!"

I looked at him and fell silent.

So that was how they saw me.

I was their own flesh and blood, the one who'd struggled out in the world for twenty years.

And just because I'd protected myself instead of cooking for the girl they'd raised in my place, I wasn't even good enough to be called a good daughter.

The last bit of warmth in my heart vanished for good.

"Then just treat me like an outsider."

I'd simply take my resources and clients with me.

The moment I said it, Dad completely lost it and raised his hand to hit me.

But his hand froze in midair, trembling nonstop.

Mom tensed up instantly.

"Are you crazy? Even if you don't care about hurting her, think about Cora!"

Every drop of blood in my body ran cold.

So they'd known all along.

In my last life, Cora had gone swimming in an ice lake at -22°F while I froze inside a heated house until my organs began to fail. I threw away every shred of dignity and begged them to take me to the hospital.

They said I was putting on an act.

They even filmed me and sent the video to Cora to cheer her up.

Just then, a message came in from my assistant, Elise.

"The hotel in Solvarra and the armed security team are all set. Your flight lands at 3 p.m. Ground temperatures there are forecast to hit 127°F."

I gave my parents one last look.

"Maeve! You called the cops?!"Cora shrieked, her face so twisted she barely looked human.I didn't answer her.I turned to face Grandma's headstone and bowed deeply."Grandma, I'm sorry you had to see such filth."I straightened up and coldly watched them scramble to get away, but it was already too late.More than a dozen officers rushed up the mountain path and surrounded them. The lead officer rattled off seven names in a booming voice."You're all under arrest on multiple charges, including extortion, unlawful imprisonment, assault, and fabricating evidence!"Mom screamed hysterically and fought to break through the circle, but two female officers pinned her down.Brenda dropped to the ground, kicking and wailing."Maeve, you heartless thing! Have you forgotten who raised you? Have you forgotten—""I haven't forgotten. When I was little, you made me stand out in the snow as punishment while you sat inside cuddling Tyler in front of the TV. I picked up the bouquet of white lilies and walked out the door.I knew they were waiting for me.Dale and Brenda's little alliance was already lying in wait at Grandma's grave.Mom and Dad, Cora, Rhys, and Dale and Brenda with their son, Tyler.Seven vultures circling one lone prey. But what they didn't know was that this prey had stopped being prey a long time ago.I carried the white lilies and climbed the mountain one step at a time. The flagstone path was slick, so I walked slowly. Not because I was scared. I just wanted to spend a little more time with Grandma. When she was alive, this had been her favorite path. She used to say that when you walked it, you could hear the mountain wind talking.Grandma's headstone was at the very back.I crouched down, set the lilies in front of it, and gently brushed the dust off the stone."Grandma, I came to see you."My eyes stung.Memories came flooding back. When I was little, I used to lie with my head in Grandma's lap and l

"But when Tyler coughed once, you rode your bike through the night to get him to the ER in town. Why didn't you remember I was your daughter then?"The line went silent for a moment. Then she switched to a tearful whine."Mae, why are you holding a grudge? We were poor back then! You have to understand!""I understand."I cut her off."That's exactly why I'm not giving you a single cent."I hung up and blocked both their numbers. But human nature is a funny thing. You never know just how greedy people can get. When Dale and Brenda couldn't reach me, they turned around and went straight to the Talbots.I don't know how they did it, but the two sides hit it off right away and formed an alliance to take me down.In the visiting room at the detention center, Mom and Dad looked through the glass at Brenda's sun-weathered face. Not long ago, the two sides had been enemies. After all, the Talbots had nearly broken Dale's old legs. But now they had a common enemy.Me."That ungra

Dad leaned in and shouted too."Maeve, if you don't come back, I'll break your adoptive father's legs! He's old anyway. Nobody will care if he ends up crippled!"I didn't say a single word the entire time. I just hung up and dialed 911."Hello, I'd like to report a crime. Someone is illegally holding my adoptive parents. You raised her, so you can answer for her!"The moment the door was kicked in, everyone froze."Police! Don't move!"Gun barrels were trained right on them.Cora's scissors clattered to the floor, and every last drop of color drained from her face.Rhys threw his hands up on instinct, but an officer forced him strai

One blow after another had shattered Cora's mind. She just couldn't believe it.The system had given her the sensory-swap ability, and I'd cracked it with almost no effort. She'd thought victory was in the bag. Instead, I'd driven her into this miserable state."It's my fault?"You're the ones who always favored me! You drove Maeve to the edge!"You think you're such good people?!"How dare you put all the blame on me!"It was about to get dark, and a wave of despair settled over them. They had no water and no money. Seeing how badly she was shaking, the woman sighed."Oh, honey, what happened to you? You can't go around dressed like that

Several men were circling her, and the naked malice in their eyes made her tremble all over. One of them reached out and tugged at her skirt. She screamed and jerked away, only for another to grab her by the hair from behind."Don't touch me! Do you have any idea who I am? My dad's rich! I'll pay you!"She kept crying and screaming. The only answer she got was harsh laughter and hands that grew even bolder.By the time Rhys reached her, she was sunburned all over and a complete wreck. But soon enough, Rhys was surrounded too. When the police stormed into my luxury suite in Solvarra with their guns drawn, the room was empty. The bed was neatly made, the curtains were drawn, and the bathroom was bone-dry, without a single drop of water anywhere. The only thing on the coffee table was a note."Enjoy your trip, everyone. —Maeve"The Solvarran officer in charge turned livid. His eyes practically screamed, Are you people messing with me?"Mr. and Mrs. Talbot, this so-called susp
