Tessa’s POV

Lessons from a stranger.

I looked down first, imitating the slight bow of the man beside me. I felt a wave of inferiority wash over me as I concluded that whoever was behind those tinted glass was judging my whole existence, from my clothes down to my dusty shoes.

“Not just anyone dared to step into Crestwood estate” the man beside me said, as though reading my thoughts. “That must have been the reason why he slowed down to decipher who you are”.

“Interesting” I muttered under my breath, swallowing the rest of my questions.

At the gate, he stopped and looked at me, expression unreadable.

“Good luck with your contract” He said.

I nodded. “Thank you…for everything”.

He inclined his head slightly. “Take care of yourself, Tessa.”

And then, he was gone.

I stepped into the streets, head low, my feet dragging my tired body. Normally, I would have entered a taxi, but tonight, I didn’t want to be whisked away. I needed the wind, the movement, the city noises brushing against me like a small reminder that the world still existed beyond broken moments.

I bought a bottle of gin from the first corner shop nearby. Twisting the cap and taking the first sip, I let the burn travel down my throat, chasing the tightness from my chest. The noise from speeding cars, open windows, loud music, and the streets washed over me, letting my footsteps stretch long and feel light.

“How much for a pack of cigarettes?” I asked the shop owner who was already packing up his things, closing for the day.

“They are all sold out.” He replied after scrambling through the shelf behind him.

“Why is it that nothing is going well for me today?” I scoffed , breathing out heavily while holding my tears back.

The shop owner looked at me with a confused expression. “Miss?” He said

“I mean…” I started. “Even you of all people are making me feel unfortunate… I just wanted some cigarettes, is that hard to provide too?” I laughed bitterly, pressing my upper and lower lips against one another.

I walked away from the confused man and somewhere down the road, the faint sound of spinning rides caught my attention. I wandered towards it without thinking, drawn to the small amusement park located in a quiet corner. I sank onto a bench near a carousel and let my bag rest on my lap. My eyes fell to the ground, tracing cracks in the pavement, the discarded wrapper of a candy, a tiny puddle reflecting the half moon.

Then, a sudden thump of small shoes made me look up. A little girl, no older than seven, came jogging towards me, arms flying in the air, laughter bubbling out in tiny bursts. She climbed onto the bench beside me, swinging her legs carelessly, not caring I was a total stranger.

“Hi!” She said, voice bright and breathless. “Are you sad?”

I blinked. “Uh…maybe”, I answered, unsure how to answer a child.

She tilted her head, big eyes studying me. “It’s okay to be sad,” she said, sounding oddly grown up. “My mummy says…sometimes grown ups get all sad and stiff, like robots. But you can’t be a robot all the time, I guess,…it sounds tiring”

I stared, a lump forming in my throat. Her words were simple, almost clumsy, yet they carried something so real it cut through the armour I had already started to build around my heart.

“You…you think so?” I asked softly.

She shrugged, swinging her legs to and fro. “Yes. If you don’t cry it out, it gets stuck in your chest and you can’t even remember how to laugh” she started unwrapping the little candy in her hand.

I exhaled, a shaky laugh escaping my mouth. The weight in my chest lifted just enough for tears to prick the corner of my eyes. I wanted to tell her she was amazing, that she had no idea how much her tiny words meant, but all I could do was nod and force a smile, feeling a strange warmth bloom inside of me.

The little girl leaned closer, straightening her back to let her mouth come some inches away from my ears, her voice almost a whisper. “My mum cries alone in her room whenever my dad travels.” She sat back upright and continued unwrapping her candy. “Adults always get sad when they’re stressed but try to hide it.”

“And I bet your mum doesn’t cry all through till your daddy returns right?” I asked, not even knowing the reason I asked such a question.

“ Nope, she doesn’t cry all day long.” She stopped and brought out a rumpled paper from her shorts. “I failed my math test today.” She said, handing me the paper. “I always fail my math test all the time and I cry all day in the park until my mum comes to look for me. I cry when no one wants to play the swing with me too.”

I swallowed hard.

She continued. “Today, someone finally wanted to play the swing with me” she said, the happiness evident throughout her smiling face.

Eventually, she bounced off the bench, waving her tiny hand before running back towards the carousel, a small boy patiently waiting for her with ice cream in each hand.

I stayed a moment longer, breathing, letting her words sink into the hollow places in my chest.

When I finally stood, the night air wrapped around me like a soft blanket. My steps were steadier now, carrying me towards the little penthouse I called home.

The lights in the hallway flickered as I reached my floor. I slowed, keys already in my hand, when a voice echoed through the thin walls.

“Miss Tessa?” the caretaker called, knuckles rapping hard against my door. “We need to talk about your rent.”

Damn!. I didn’t even remember I had promised to pay up my two years rent I owed them. My chest tightened. I froze, then quietly stepped back, turning toward the stairs. One step. Then another. I hated that feeling. The feeling of hiding away from responsibility.

My phone buzzed.

I stopped.

Evan’s name glowed on the screen.

Leo’s POV “Well , would you just stand there watching me like I’m some kind of stranger?” Sophie asked, maybe totally amused that I hadn’t hugged her yet. “Can we…can we talk upstairs?” I asked, leading her past the now impatient gateman. She followed me inside without hesitation, so informally that I remembered of course, we had dated for 7 years. She knew every nook and cranny of the house and every nook and cranny of me too. I led her to the sitting room and sat down, about to start talking, not even realizing she was still standing up. “What are you doing?” She asked, a question so odd I started to wonder what she was talking about. “Look Sophie,…” I began. “I understand you feel as though I didn’t miss you, I… “No, not that”, she interrupted. “I mean, why are we in the sitting room? Am I some kind of stranger?” Right. She hasn’t changed. In the past, she hated it when someone made her feel insignificant, especially when it was coming from me. I hesitated

Leo’s POV But I wasn’t done with him yet. My eyes moved to the front cover of his file where his name was written. “Reide,…you were born in Africa?” He didn’t flinch at the question but his lips pressed against each other, a little tighter than it should normally be. “My mother was African, my father was American” “Was?” I asked. “Yes sir…they are both dead.” I nodded. Well, should I have apologized before? Yh, maybe. “So sorry for that.” I said, standing up from my desk and shaking his hands. “We’ll communicate with all of you before next week.” “Alright sir, thank you sir” and with that, he walked out with the same composure he came in with. After two more candidates came in and left, a knock came before the door opened. “Sir,” Charles said as he stepped in, his posture straight as always. “That was the last of them.” “Did you look into Reide’s file?” I asked, picking up the file and glancing through its pages again. Charles stepped further into the room, c

  • OBSESSIVELY HIS.    Chapter 12: NEXT.

Leo’s POV My fingers tapped impatiently at the desk in front of me. My father’s voice still rang in my ears. Not that I wasn’t already used to his summons but I hated the fact that the whole family would be present. Another memory crept in through fragments: the curve of her intoxicating smile under the dim hotel room light, the quiet confidence in the way she had looked at me, as if she already knew how the night would end. I adjusted my cufflinks, jaw tightening. It meant nothing. Women like her—no, women in general—were interruptions from a life that demanded precision. She surely was no different. Just that morning, she had been reduced to the same category as the others. A closed chapter. Nothing special. “Sir?” My eyes snapped to the glass door of my office. It slid open smoothly, revealing Charles, holding a tablet in one hand and an expression that was always just slightly too amused for someone in his position. “They’re ready,” he said, stepping in. “Or at

  • OBSESSIVELY HIS.    Chapter 11: I couldn’t break his gaze.

Tessa’s POV You know, I don’t think people talk enough about how frustrating it is to come back from a long, stressful day that didn’t even feel productive, only to fall asleep without meaning to… and then wake up the next morning remembering you actually have somewhere important to be. That was me. The sunlight pushed through my worn-out curtains and landed right on my face, dragging me out of sleep whether I liked it or not. I squinted, turning slightly, but it didn’t help. The light was already too bright. Already morning?. I looked at my table clock. 12:59pm?!! My body still felt heavy as I laid there for a few seconds, trying to gather myself. That was when I noticed it. I was still wearing yesterday’s clothes. I sat up slowly, blinking a few times as the memory of the previous day came rushing back all at once. “Damn… how did I even sleep like that?” I rubbed my face and let out a small breath before dragging myself off the bed and to the bathroom. I did a quick la

  • OBSESSIVELY HIS.    Chapter 10: Holding on, quietly.

Tessa’s POV I wiped my hand lightly on my dress before answering. “Hello?” “Tessa,” her voice came in, calm and direct as always. “Good afternoon.” “Good afternoon, ma.” “I’m calling from Crestwood Estate,” she continued. “About the bartender position you applied for.” My back straightened without me realizing it. “Yes, ma.” “You passed the physical assessment,” she said. “We would like you to come in tomorrow by 3 p.m. You’ll be meeting with others who also qualified.” For a moment, I didn’t say anything. The words settled slowly, like they needed time to make sense. “I… okay, ma. I’ll be there.” “Good,” she said. “Don’t be late.” “I won’t.” The call ended shortly after. I kept holding the phone for a few seconds, staring at nothing in particular. Then I placed it beside me on the bed and leaned back. A job. Finally. It was indeed a weird job for a young girl in her early twenties but it was something that could actually change things, even if it was just a little.

  • OBSESSIVELY HIS.    Chapter 9: People do leave easily.

Tessa’s POV I stepped out of the hotel without looking back. The air outside felt cooler against my skin, and for a moment, I just stood there, adjusting my bag on my shoulder as the street carried on around me. A man brushed past me in a hurry, his shoulder knocking lightly against mine. “Sorry,” he said quickly, already moving on. I didn’t care. I raised my hand as a couple of taxis rode past me before one pulled over after a few seconds. I slid into the cab, shutting the door behind me as I leaned back into the street. “Flech Street”. The driver nodded, about to move, but I spoke again. “Take the longer route,” I added. “I’ll pay more.” He glanced at me through the mirror, surprised. “That will take about thirty minutes. And it will cost extra.” “No problem,” I replied. He gave a small nod and pulled into the road. The car moved at a steady pace, blending into traffic. I rested my head against the seat and looked out the window, watching the city pass by. My
