Chapter 50

Elowen

We talked for over an hour, easy conversation that flowed naturally, about his writing and my abandoned design career and books we loved and places we'd been, nothing deep or probing, just two people connecting in a quiet library on a warm afternoon.

Amante told me about growing up in Positano, about watching it transform from a small fishing village into a tourist destination, about how he tried to capture the old soul of the place in his writing before it disappeared completely.

I told him about design school, about the excitement of my first real client, about how I'd loved creating something from nothing, about dreams I'd packed away when I got tired. Some parts were lies but nothing too bad.

By the time I finally stood to leave, the sun was lower in the sky casting golden light through the library windows, and I'd almost forgotten about the villa and the three men waiting there and the nightmare I'd be returning to.

"Thank you," I said to Amante as we walked tow

  • OFF LIMIT: FOURTEEN NIGHTS WITH MY HUSBAND'S BEST FRIENDS    HE FROZE INSTANTLY, SEARCHING MY FACE

Chapter 89Elowen The kiss didn't rush itself, and that was the first thing that felt different, because it unfolded slowly, like neither of us was trying to win anything, like we were both listening for something beneath the surface. His hands rested at my waist at first, warm and steady, and the quiet confidence in that touch made my breath hitch before I could stop it. I could feel his heartbeat through the space between us, could feel how controlled he was even now, and that restraint pulled at me harder than hunger ever could. He broke the kiss, but only by inches. His forehead rested against mine, and I could feel the unsteady rhythm of his breath, a mirror to my own.His thumb brushing the inside of my wrist as if he needed proof that I was real. He didn't say anything, and neither did I, because words felt unnecessary and dangerous at the same time. There was nothing to say that wasn't already being spoken by the frantic, silent thrumming of blood in my ears, by the way my

  • OFF LIMIT: FOURTEEN NIGHTS WITH MY HUSBAND'S BEST FRIENDS    WAY TO RUIN THE NIGHT ELOWEN

Chapter 88Elowen Way to ruin the night Elowen.Kian paused with his wine glass halfway to his lips and I saw something shift in his expression."Why do you ask?" he said carefully."I'm just curious," I said, which was partly true. "You're both obviously successful and both seem to have resources beyond what normal people have, and I just wondered if there's some kind of competition between you.""It's not about competition," Kian said, setting his glass down. "We operate in different spheres, different industries, different approaches to wealth building.""But who has more?" I pressed, because his evasion made me more curious."Probably about even," Kian said after a long pause. "Matteo inherited significant wealth from his family and built on it through architecture and real estate development, I started with less but grew it faster through investments and my law practice."I nodded, processing that, and then asked the question that had been bothering me since we arrived in Italy.

  • OFF LIMIT: FOURTEEN NIGHTS WITH MY HUSBAND'S BEST FRIENDS    WHAT DO YOU ACTUALLY WANT?

Chapter 87Elowen"Adrian did grand gestures in the beginning," I said, my voice muffled against his chest. "Expensive gifts, fancy restaurants and trips to Paris, but they always felt like they were about showing off rather than actually making me happy, like he was checking boxes on what a good boyfriend or husband does rather than paying attention to what I actually wanted.""And what do you actually want?" Kian asked."This," I whispered. "This exactly—someone who listens when I talk and remembers the little things and makes an effort to create experiences instead of just buying things, someone who makes me feel seen instead of just looked at."Kian pulled back enough to look at me and his grey eyes were intense as they searched my face. "Then that's what you'll have," he said firmly, making my heart miss a beat by his words. "For as long as we're on this trip, I promise you'll feel seen." He added. The tears came harder at that and I couldn't stop them, couldn't control the emot

Chapter 86ElowenI slipped the bracelet on and it caught the light beautifully, and every time I looked at it for the rest of the day I thought about the casual way he'd given it to me, like making me happy was worth any price.By late afternoon we were both tired from walking and decided to head back to the mainland, taking the ferry back while the sun started its descent toward the horizon. This time we sat on the outdoor deck and Kian pulled me against his side with his arm around my shoulders, and I let myself lean into him and pretend this was real."Thank you for today," I said quietly. "This was perfect.""We're not done yet," Kian said, and there was something in his voice that made me look up at him curiously."What do you mean?""You'll see," he said with a mysterious smile. "Trust me."We drove back to the hotel and Kian told me to get ready for dinner, something nice but not too formal, and to meet him in the lobby at seven.I went to my room with questions buzzing in my

Chapter 85Elowen"Then we'll eat what we want and leave the rest," Kian said with a shrug. "Sit, have coffee, tell me how you slept."I settled into the chair across from him and accepted the coffee he poured, watching him add cream and sugar without asking because somehow he'd already memorized how I took it."I slept well," I said. "Better than I have in a while actually.""Good," Kian said, and he seemed genuinely pleased by that. "I was worried the sound of the waves might keep you up but I figured it was worth the risk for the view."We ate slowly while planning our day, deciding to visit Capri first since it required a ferry and specific timing, and Kian pulled out his phone to show me pictures of the Blue Grotto and explain the best time to see it.His enthusiasm was infectious and I found myself leaning closer to see the screen, our shoulders touching, and neither of us moved away from the contact."We should get going soon if we want to catch the ten-thirty ferry," he said,

  • OFF LIMIT: FOURTEEN NIGHTS WITH MY HUSBAND'S BEST FRIENDS    THIS IS TOO MUCH

Chapter 84Elowen "I didn't want to assume anything even though we've been... you know."The consideration in that gesture made my chest tight because Adrian never would have thought about whether I wanted my own space, would have just assumed he had rights to me regardless of the circumstances."Thank you," I said. "For thinking about what I might need again, instead of just assuming."My room was simple but lovely with white linens and blue accents that echoed the sea outside, and I stood on the balcony for a long moment breathing in the salt air and trying to process everything that had happened today. This trip was supposed to be about manipulation and seduction and making Kian fall for me enough to help me escape Adrian. But somewhere between the sunroof, the jeep and the patient stops and the genuine conversations, it had started to feel like something else entirely.Had started to feel like maybe I was the one in danger of falling instead of him.Had started to feel like maybe
