Xander’s POV

The rink felt like a cage that morning. My skates cut across the ice, but my head wasn’t in it. Every pass, every drill, every whistle from Coach, it all blurred. I couldn’t stop replaying last night in Olivia’s office. The way she said it was the “last time.” The way she still clung to me like she didn’t believe her own words. The way Ethan’s voice froze the blood in my veins when he rattled that damn door.

“Hayes!”

Coach Miller’s bark snapped me back to reality. The puck slid past my stick, clattering against the boards. Teammates groaned, a few shaking their heads. I cursed under my breath and chased it down, but the damage was done.

“What the hell is with you today?” Coach shouted from the bench. His eyes were narrow, sharp as a hawk. “That’s the third turnover in ten minutes.”

I forced a smirk, trying to brush it off. “Guess I need more coffee.”

“Guess you need to get your head out of your ass,” he shot back.

They hadn't stopped crying since the nurses cleaned them out.
