"Are you ready, Doctor?" Marcus asks, his hand trembling as he grips the handle of the back exit door.

I look to my right. Ethan is standing there, zipped up in a sleek, black Westbridge United tracksuit. His jaw is clenched so tightly that a muscle tethers in his cheek. He doesn't look at me. He stares at the metal door like he’s about to walk into a war zone.

"I'm ready," I say, forcing my voice to remain perfectly calm.

"The moment we step out, the cameras will go off," Marcus warns, checking his phone screen one last time. "Don't look at the flashing lights. Just look at each other. Make it look like you're his anchor."

"Let's just get this over with," Ethan growls, dragging a hand down the front of his tracksuit.

Marcus pushes the door open.

The transition from the quiet concrete tunnel to the outside world is violent. A wall of noise hits us instantly. The questions hit us from every direction.

“Ethan! Over here!”

“Dr. Bennett! Is it true?”

“Cross, look up! Did you hit Julian because of her?”

Flash! Flash! Flash!

The blinding strobe lights of a hundred cameras explode in my face. The brightness is dizzying, cutting through the London drizzle. For a fraction of a second, my professional composure slips. I stumble, my foot catching on the edge of the pavement as the aggressive crowd of journalists surges forward, pushing past the metal barricades.

Before I can lose my balance completely, a massive, heavy arm wraps around my waist.

Ethan catches me. He pulls me hard against his side, anchoring my small frame against his solid, six-foot-two athletic build. The heat of his body radiates through his tracksuit, cutting through the freezing rain. My face presses briefly against his chest, catching the sharp, masculine scent of clean metallic sweat and luxury cologne.

Every coherent thought abandons me. My skin under his palm feels like it's on fire.

"Keep moving," Ethan commands under his breath. His voice is a low, vibrating rumble against my ear.

He doesn't let go. His fingers dig firmly into the fabric of my charcoal blazer, holding me impossibly close as he navigates us through the sea of shouting faces and blinding lenses. To the cameras, it looks like a protective, deeply intimate embrace. To the public, it looks like a boyfriend shielding his woman from the chaos.

But behind his calculated movements, I can feel his body. His muscles are rigid. His chest is rising and falling in shallow, rapid breaths. He isn't just protecting me. He is using me as a shield to keep from exploding again.

"Breathe, Ethan," I murmur, keeping my face turned toward his jawline so the cameras only see an intimate whisper. "Four seconds in. Hold it. Four seconds out."

I feel him stiffen. He looks down at me, his hazel eyes dark, stormy, and flashing with a dangerous mix of shock and irritation. But he takes a deep, ragged breath anyway.

The security team shoves a path open for us, and Ethan guides me toward the back of a waiting black luxury sedan. Marcus opens the door, and Ethan practically pushes me inside before sliding in right after me.

The heavy door slams shut. Instantly, the roar outside disappears, leaving nothing but the strained silence trapped between us.

Ethan instantly yanks his arm away from my waist, backing as far into his side of the leather seat as possible. It’s as if touching me burned him.

"Don't do that again," he snaps, his breathing finally slowing down. He glares out the window at the flashing lights reflecting off the dark glass.

"Do what? Save you from a panic attack in front of the global media?" I straighten my rumpled blazer before tucking a few loose strands of hair back into place, hoping my unsteady hands aren't as obvious as they feel. "You're welcome, by the way."

Ethan turns his head, his hazel eyes narrowing into two icy slits as he stares at me. The vulnerability I felt under his ribcage a moment ago is entirely gone, replaced by the familiar, arrogant armor.

"I don't get panic attacks," he says, each word clipped with controlled anger. "And I don't need a shrink telling me how to breathe in my own car. We established the rules in the locker room, Doctor. This is a performance. The moment the doors close, the show is over."

I let out a soft, mocking laugh, refusing to let him see how much his sudden physical proximity actually rattled me.

"Good. Then we are on the same page, Mr. Cross," I reply smoothly, crossing my legs and looking at him with clinical detachment. "Because your performance needs work. Your heart was beating so hard I thought it was going to break my ribs. If you want the world to believe you're a changed man, you're going to have to do a lot better than that."

Ethan’s jaw tightens so hard the bone looks sharp. As he opens his mouth to strike back, "It's already online." Marcus interrupts from the front passenger seat, turning around with a panicked look.

Ethan slid his phone from his pocket. He looks at the screen. His expression goes entirely blank. He turns the phone screen toward me.

The headline is already trending globally, accompanied by a crystal-clear, high-definition photo of Ethan’s hand locked tightly around my waist, his face buried near my hair.

FOOTBALL'S TICKING TIME BOMB HAS A MATCH: ETHAN CROSS SPOTTED FLEEING STADIUM WITH MYSTERY WOMAN AFTER INFAMOUS PUNCH.

Below the article, another notification flashes onto the screen. Julian Vance. @JulianV9 "Good luck, Doctor!. You are going to need it." Thousands of likes. Hundreds of comments. The post is spreading by the second.

Ethan looks at me, his eyes burning with an intense, dark fire. "The game just started, Doctor. And Julian is already playing dirty."

MayaThe heavy soundproof door of the stadium press room swings shut behind us, muting the roar of journalists into a dull thunder beyond the walls. Only then do I realize Ethan is still holding my hand.Heat lingers where his fingers wrap around mine, sending my pulse racing. "Ethan..." I whisper, trying to pull free. "Let go." His head turns sharply toward me. For a split second, surprise flashes across his face, as though he'd forgotten he was still holding on.He releases my hand immediately. "I'm sorry." The warmth disappears, leaving my fingers strangely cold. Before I can ask what possessed him to say those things in front of the entire country, the backstage door slams open.Chairman Alistair Vance storms into the corridor, his polished shoes striking the concrete like gunfire. Marcus rushes after him, looking as though he's aged ten years in the last five minutes. "Have you completely lost your mind?" Alistair barks. His finger shoots toward Ethan."I gave you one statement.

EthanThe rich aroma of freshly brewed espresso fills the kitchen, but the mug cooling on the marble counter remains untouched—07:00 AM. I haven't slept.Every time I close my eyes, I'm back on that gym floor, struggling for air. I still feel Maya's cool fingers resting over my trembling fist, anchoring me to reality while the panic threatens to drag me under. My phone vibrates violently across the countertop. Marcus. A knot tightens in my chest as I answer. "Ethan!" His voice is ragged with panic. "Turn on Channel Five. Or any sports network. Right now." Without a word, I swipe the wall-mounted control panel. The giant television flickers to life. MayaMarcus reaches me as I walk towards the tunnel.“The photographers are waiting outside,” he says quietly. “They’ve been there since before training started.”My grip tightens around the tablet tucked beneath my arm.“Every outlet wants photos of you leaving with Ethan,” Marcus continues. “If you walk out separately after yesterday’s apartment story, they’ll tear the relationship apart.”I close my eyes for the briefest moment before letting out a slow breath.“So we play our part,” I say flatly.Marcus nods. “Exactly.”Neither of us says another word.Minutes later, the hum of the luxury car’s engine fills the silence as we leave Westbridge United’s training ground behind. Ethan doesn't look at me once. After dismantling Julian on the pitch, he has retreated behind that familiar wall again, his arms folded tightly across his chest as the rain streaks the window beside him. Whatever passed between us during training is gone. By the time we reach the penthouse, he steps out without

Ethan The scent of damp grass and winter mud always clears my head.Today, however, the air at the Westbridge United Training Centre feels thick with hostility. I strap my shin guards on, pulling my black socks up over my calves with slow, deliberate movements. My fingers brush the silver ring resting against my chest underneath my training top.“He can come after my jersey all he wants,” my own voice echoes in my head from last night. “But the moment he brings you into this… he crosses a line.”I walk out onto the pristine training pitch. The morning sun cuts through the London fog, illuminating the sidelines. My gaze instantly drifts toward the tactical dugout.Maya is standing there. She is back in her professional attire, a tailored navy coat, her hair pinned up, holding her digital tablet. But she isn't looking at her screen. Maya The neon glow of the streetlamp flickers through the thin curtains of my tiny London apartment.I sink onto the faded velvet sofa, surrounded by towering stacks of medical journals, dog-eared books, and potted plants that somehow thrive despite my erratic schedule. The apartment is barely big enough to stretch out in, but for the first time all day, I can be myself.A sharp knock at my front door shatters the quiet.I frown, checking the time on my phone. It’s nearly midnight. I pull my cardigan tighter around my shoulders, walk over, and peer through the peephole. My stomach drops.Marcus, Ethan's agent, is standing in the hallway, looking around frantically like a man fleeing a crime scene.I unlock the deadbolt and pull the door open. "Marcus? What are you doing here at this hour?""We have a massive problem, Maya," Marcus gasps. Without waiting for an answer, Marcus slipped past me and into the apartment. He runs a hand over his balding head, holding up his tablet. "The papa

  • OFFSIDE HEARTS: His Dr. Anchor    Chapter 6

MayaSecurity closes in around us before I can gather my thoughts. Questions are fired from every direction, but they blur into meaningless noise beneath the relentless crack of camera shutters. Ethan's hand remains firmly around my waist as we are hurried through the grand lobby and out toward the black luxury sedan waiting at the curb. Ethan opens the rear door, silently urging me inside. The heavy leather door of the luxury club sedan clicks shut, instantly suffocating the roar of the press pack outside. The moment we are behind closed doors, my professional mask shatters."Are you completely out of your mind?!" I spin around in the leather seat, my chest heaving beneath my green silk dress as I glare at Ethan.Ethan doesn't answer immediately. He calmly unties his black velvet bowtie, tossing it onto the armrest between us. He looks completely unaffected, though the tight line of his jaw tells a different story."I explicitly stated the rules, Ethan," I hiss, my voice a fierce, lo
