Mia's pov

Priya showed up with two milkshakes instead of one the morning after my kitchen confrontation with Eli, setting mine down in front of me on the porch steps without asking whether I actually wanted it, which was exactly the right call, because I hadn't known I wanted it until it was already in my hand.

"Okay," she said, sitting down beside me. "Tell me everything, and don't leave out the part where you clearly want to scream into a pillow."

"I don't even know where to start."

Jordan's pov I came home from a closing shift at the hardware store to find my mother's bedroom door slightly open and her voice carrying low into the hallway, careful and measured in the specific way she talked when she thought I wasn't listening.I stopped just outside the door, my keys still in my hand, and told myself I was only pausing to take off my boots, though I knew, even as I told myself that, it wasn't the whole truth."I understand the concern," she was saying, "but I need the language to hold regardless of how things play out with the pregnancy. Contingent upon confirmed lineage, that stays exactly as written. I don't want any ambiguity if it comes down to that."There was a pause, presumably Mr. Alvarez responding on the other end, and I stood there in the hallway with one boot half untied, my chest tightening around a phrase I still didn't fully understand and had apparently failed to let go of the way I'd told myself I had."I know it sounds cold," my mother continue

Nate's pov I found Bianca again a week later, this time on purpose, catching her after her Thursday lecture let out and walking with her toward the parking lot under the excuse of needing directions to a building I'd walked past a hundred times."You're a terrible liar, you know," she said, once we were a few steps clear of the crowd. "You know exactly where the chem building is.""Caught.""So what's actually going on? You've been weird since we talked last week."I hesitated, weighing how much to actually say, and decided on something close to the truth without handing her the full shape of what I was circling. "I've just been thinking about the whole leak thing from back in January. The post about Mia. Trying to piece together how it actually spread, since it still comes up sometimes and I realized I never really understood the timeline of it.""That's a random thing to be thinking about months later.""Yeah, I know. Humor me."She shrugged, unbothered, clearly not suspicious of t

Eli's pov I tried to tell Jordan about the side door first, catching him outside the hardware store on his lunch break, and I watched him try to focus on what I was saying while his phone sat face up on the table between us, his eyes drifting toward it every few seconds like he was bracing for the hospital to call."A side door," he repeated, rubbing a hand over his face. "Sorry, man, that's, I mean, that's actually kind of a big deal, right? Somebody leaving that way instead of the front.""Yeah, I think it could actually mean something. I just don't know what to do with it yet.""I wish I could help you think it through properly, I really do." He glanced at the phone again, guilt crossing his face. "My mom's got a scan follow up in twenty minutes and I still need to figure out how I'm covering the copay on it, and I've got maybe four minutes of actual brain space left today that isn't completely consumed by that.""No, I get it. Don't worry about it.""I'm not blowing you off on pu

Mia's pov Colton Ward met me at a table near the back of the student union, already scrolling through his phone before I'd even sat down, which struck me as either impressively proactive or a little unsettling, given that I'd texted him less than an hour ago."So you're trying to find footage from Danny's party back in January," he said, not looking up. "Priya's friend mentioned you needed help with something like that.""Yeah. I know it's a long shot. I just heard you were filming a lot that night.""Oh, I filmed basically the whole thing. I was trying to build up my page back then, thought party content was going to be my whole brand." He said it without any embarrassment, like this was simply a fact about himself he'd made peace with. "Didn't really pan out, but I never delete old footage. You never know when something's going to be useful for a compilation later.""That's actually perfect for what I need.""What exactly are you looking for?"I hesitated, unsure how much to actual

Jordan's pov I couldn't stop replaying it, the way Eli's voice had sounded in Nate's living room, flat and certain in a way that didn't match the boy I'd known my entire life, and the way Mia had looked standing there afterward, like something inside her had quietly given out."You've been somewhere else all night," Priya said, sitting across from me at the kitchen table, my mom finally settled and asleep after a rough round of nausea that had eaten most of the evening."Sorry. Just thinking about the other night. At Nate's.""Yeah." She wrapped both hands around her mug, not drinking from it, just holding the warmth. "I still can't stop thinking about it either. That wasn't just Eli having a bad night. Something about the way he said it felt off.""I know. I've known him since we were kids, and I've never heard him say something that calculated before. Cruel, sure, everybody's cruel sometimes when they're scared. But that specific, out of nowhere, aimed exactly at the one thing that

  • ONE LAST TEXT   Chapter Thirty-Three: Something Doesn't Add Up

Nate's pov I hadn't planned on bringing up Claire at all. I ran into Bianca Torres at the dining hall, both of us grabbing coffee before an early class, and it was pure accident that the conversation drifted toward her, some offhand comment about how everyone seemed to be leaning on each other more than usual lately, given everything with Eli and Mia and Jordan's mom."Claire's been a rock through all of it, honestly," Bianca said, stirring cream into her cup. "I don't know how Eli would've handled the last few weeks without her checking in on him constantly.""Yeah, she's been around a lot." I said it evenly, no particular weight behind it, though something about the words sat differently in my chest than they had a few weeks ago."You two close? I feel like I never really see you and her together.""Not especially. I know her mostly through Eli." I hesitated, then figured I might as well ask, since the opening was right there and I'd been curious about it since the day she'd first
