Salma I remained by Leona's side for an hour after Brandon left. My grandmother and Josephine had gone to a hotel to freshen up and rest before changing shifts on who would stay with Leona. If it were left to me, I would spend every second by my daughter's bedside, but they would not let me. As I watched her sleep, I heard a soft knock on the door. “Come in,” I said, assuming at once that it was a nurse coming to check on Leona's drip or some such thing. Or it was Josephine or my grandmother who had come back. But when I looked up, I saw a face that had no business being here. “What the hell, John?” I looked at him with nothing but surprise. I had not reached out to him since he had spoken to me about investigating my father. I had to admit that for a brief period, I had been tempted to expose my father's past, especially if he had killed my mother but at the moment, I had much bigger things to worry about. “I just need a moment,” he pleaded. “How did you even know I was here?”

Brandon “Elaine,” I said her name softly, feeling awkward at once. Salma was sleeping in my bed and my pregnant fiancée was standing in front of me—both mothers of my children. Brandon “I'll be spending the night at the Ritz Carlton,” Salma said, completely ignoring all I had just said about loving my daughter. “You almost fell twice,” I said, “you're staying at my place.” I expected her to protest but she said nothing, only stared out the window. The ride up to my Penthouse was quiet. When I opened the door to let her in, I realised it was the first time she had ever been here. She did not comment on my minimalist taste or monochrome aesthetics. She simply asked, “Where's your bathroom?” I led her quietly into my room—my room which I never shared with anyone. I held my breath as she stepped in. Her eyes swept the large bedroom which had as little furniture as possible, giving it the same feel as my office. She gazed at the floor-to-ceiling windows that stretched across one side of the wall which made it possible to gaze down at Dallas as though the beautiful night lights were a part of the room.
