CHAPTER 5:SHOWCASE

Lucian's POV

I adjusted the gold cufflinks on my black dress shirt, staring at my reflection in the mirror. My face looked exhausted, but my posture was stiff and unyielding. Tonight was the annual Regional Alliance Summit at the Crestwood Grand Hotel, where seven surrounding werewolf packs gathered to discuss territory lines, trade routes, and mutual defense.

It was an event built entirely on appearances. Strength, wealth, and stability were everything. If an Alpha showed even the slightest crack in his armor, the surrounding packs would smell blood in the water.

And tonight, I needed to show them that the Ravenwood pack was stronger than ever.

A soft knock echoed against the doorframe. My Beta, Cole, stepped into the room, holding a brief folder.

"The motorcade is ready, Lucian," Cole said, his tone serious. "The other Alphas are already arriving at the venue. Alpha Vance of the Silvermoon pack is there too."

I tightened my jaw at the mention of Vance. Vance was an opportunistic snake who had been eying my southern border for months, waiting for any sign that the loss of Hazel had made me weak or distracted.

"Is Kayla ready?" I asked, my voice flat.

"She’s waiting in the main foyer," Marcus replied, pausing before he added in a lower voice, "She looks... like an Alpha's daughter, Lucian. She carries herself well."

I didn't answer. I pulled my dark suit jacket on, smoothing the lapels, and walked out into the corridor.

When I reached the top of the grand staircase, I stopped.

Kayla was standing near the front doors, waiting for me. She wore a long, fitted floor-length gown of deep emerald green. Her dark hair was pinned up in an elegant arrangement, leaving her neck exposed, and she wore simple silver jewelry that caught the warm light of the chandelier above.

She wasn't smiling. Her face was completely calm, smooth as glass, hiding whatever pain or resentment she was carrying inside. There was no desperation in her eyes, no eager attempt to please me. She stood tall, her shoulders back, holding herself with a quiet, regal dignity that couldn't be bought or rehearsed.

For a split second, something tight squeezed in my chest.

She was beautiful. A different kind of beautiful than Hazel—where Hazel was soft, bright, and warm like summer, Kayla was cool, sharp, and striking like a clear winter night.

I swallowed hard, forcing the thought away, and pushed her image down into the dark corners of my mind. It didn't matter how striking she looked. She was here for a purpose. She was the daughter of the late Alpha Blackthorne, a living symbol that our two territories were now unified under one command.

I walked down the stairs, my boots making a steady, heavy sound against the marble steps. Kayla turned her head slightly as I approached, her dark eyes locking onto mine. She didn't flinch.

"You look appropriate for the occasion," I said coldly, stopping a step away from her.

A small, bitter spark flickered deep in her eyes, but her expression didn't change. "Thank you, Alpha Lucian. I wouldn't want to embarrass the Ravenwood name."

"Remember your role tonight," I said, leaning in slightly so only she could hear my voice. "The other Alphas will be looking for weakness. Stand beside me. Smile when necessary. Let them see that our alliance is solid."

"I know how to play the role of a Luna," she answered, her voice smooth and devoid of any warmth. "You don't need to coach me."

I offered her my arm. She placed her gloved hand lightly on my forearm—barely touching me, keeping as much distance between us as physically possible. I felt the stiffness in her posture, but to anyone else watching, we looked like the picture of composure and power.

~~~
The grand ballroom of the Crestwood Hotel was deafeningly loud, filled with the sounds of live string music, clinking champagne flutes, and low, heavy conversations between pack leaders. Heavy gold chandeliers illuminated the massive room, and photographers from the regional pack newspapers were stationed near the entrance, flashbulbs popping every few seconds.
The moment we stepped through the double doors, dozens of eyes turned toward us.
I felt Kayla’s hand tighten slightly on my arm for half a second before she adjusted her grip, keeping her chin raised high.
"Alpha Lucian!"
Alpha Vance approached us immediately, holding a glass of dark red wine. He was an older man with graying temples and sharp, predatory eyes. He looked us up and down, his gaze lingering on Kayla for a moment longer than necessary.
"Vance," I acknowledged, giving him a brief, curt nod.
"I must say, news of your sudden wedding was a surprise to all of us," Vance said, his tone carrying a light, dangerous edge.
 "We all remembered how deeply you mourned your lost mate. But I see you've managed to secure the Blackthorne lands quite nicely."
He looked directly at Kayla, offering a smooth, fake smile. "Luna Kayla. You look radiant tonight. Your late father would be proud to see you standing beside such a powerful Alpha."
Kayla didn't hesitate. She offered Vance a serene, perfectly calculated smile—the kind of smile an Alpha's daughter gives to a rival leader she doesn't trust.
"Thank you, Alpha Vance," Kayla said, her voice clear and elegant, carrying effortlessly over the surrounding music. "My father always believed in making strong, lasting unions that serve the prosperity of our people. I am honored to fulfill his legacy."
Vance’s eyes narrowed slightly. He had been looking for a meek girl overwhelmed by her new role, but Kayla answered him with absolute confidence and authority.
Throughout the entire evening, she played her part flawlessly. When elder statesmen approached us, she spoke intelligently about land management and winter stores. When photographers stepped up to take official pictures for the regional news, she stood gracefully at my side, letting the flashbulbs capture the perfect image of the new Alpha and Luna of Ravenwood.
I placed my hand gently over hers on my arm for the cameras, playing the affectionate husband for the public eye.
But the moment the photographers turned away and the crowd drifted to another part of the hall, I immediately let go of her hand. My arm dropped back to my side, cold and detached.
I glanced down at her out of the corner of my eye. Her fingers twitched slightly where my hand had been just seconds ago, but her face remained a calm, unreadable mask. She knew exactly what I was doing. I was using her strength, her bloodline, and her flawless manners to protect my pack's image—and then tossing her attention aside the moment the audience disappeared.
~~~

Near the end of the night, we moved toward the private lounge near the back of the venue, where the high-ranking Alphas gathered for final drinks before departing.

Alpha Marcus of the Southern Pines pack, a boisterous man with a loud laugh, stepped up to us, clinking his glass against mine.

"An impressive showing tonight, Lucian," Marcus roared, slapping my shoulder with heavy camaraderie.

"The Blackthorne territory alliance puts you in the strongest position in the entire region. You've got the lands, the borders, and a magnificent Luna by your side."

"Thank you, Marcus," I said, keeping my expression controlled.

Marcus took a heavy sip of his drink, leaning in with a wide grin, his voice booming loud enough for several nearby pack leaders to hear.

"So, tell us, Lucian—now that the alliance is sealed and the territory is secure, when can we expect the news of an heir? When are you going to give the Ravenwood pack a young Alpha?"

The atmosphere around our small circle shifted instantly.

The noise of the surrounding conversations seemed to fade away. Kayla froze beside me, her breath catching softly in her throat.

A cold, dark wave crashed over my mind. The image of Hazel flashed violently behind my eyes—Hazel’s smile, Hazel’s laugh, the sacred promises we had made to each other under the moonlight before she was ripped away from me. The thought of placing an heir in another woman’s womb—the thought of touching Kayla in that way, of treating her like a real wife and replacing Hazel completely—felt like a sickening betrayal of the only woman I had ever loved.

My face instantly transformed into an icy, terrifying mask of disgust.

The air around me grew heavy and suffocating as my Alpha aura flared out in a sharp, dangerous pulse, causing several weak pack members nearby to visibly wince.

I turned my eyes onto Alpha Marcus, my gray gaze so cold and full of raw fury that the smile completely died on his lips.

"That," I said, my voice dropping to a low, lethal whisper that sliced through the room, "is none of your concern.”

Under Hazel’s casual command, they had grabbed the remaining pots and tipped them straight into the scraps, wasting hours of my hard work and leaving six injured men with plain water and dry hardtack. Mrs. Gable looked down at the floorboards, her shoulders tense, too frightened to utter a single word of protest.I knew she had a purpose for this circus and I wasn't going to give her that satisfaction.I didn't scream. I didn't reach for the daggers I used to carry at my waist. I just stood there, holding the empty wooden tray, watching the steam rise from the trash bin. My blood ran white-hot under my skin, but I kept my breathing slow, forced my hands to stay completely still, and locked my gaze onto Hazel.Hazel smoothed down the silk skirt of her cream gown, offering the room a quiet, delicate nod. Kayla Hazel’s question to Lucian down in the drawing room didn't just hang in the air; it split the pack in two before the sun even set.Lucian hadn't answered her verbally in front of the elders. He hadn't needed to. The way he had wrapped his arm around Hazel’s waist and gently ushered her and their son back up to the master suite was answer enough for everyone in Ravenwood.By the next morning, the subtle shift in how the pack treated me turned into an open wall of cold indifference.I stood in the central hallway of the lower level at seven in the morning, holding a wooden clipboard with the weekly patrol shift assignments. For ten months, the guard captains had stood at attention right here, waiting for me to sign off on their rotations.Captain Gregory walked past me, his eyes glued to the floor."Captain Gregory," I called out, my voice crisp and steady. "I have the updated guard rotations for the eastern ridge. You need to double watch near the river."Gregory stopped, but he

    LucianI didn't stay to watch Kayla walk away after telling her to vacate the master bedroom. I couldn't. Looking into her quiet, dark eyes made a sharp, uncomfortable knot tie itself in the pit of my stomach, but I forcefully smoothed it over. Hazel was back. That was the only reality that mattered.By noon, Doctor Evans had cleared Hazel to be moved.I carried her upstairs myself, wrapping her in a thick cashmere blanket. When I pushed open the double doors of the master suite, the room smelled faintly of clean linen and cedar. Kayla’s scent—that quiet, subtle trace of rain and oak—was completely gone, scrubbed away by the servants in a matter of hours. All of her clothes, her books, and her personal items had been moved down the hall to a smaller guest room in the west wing.I laid Hazel down on the massive four-poster bed. She looked so tiny against the white pillows, her pale skin contrasting sharply with her long brown hair."Lucian..." she whispered softly, her green eyes flut

    Lucian's POV "Clear the bed! Get the oxygen ready!" Doctor Evans screamed as the heavy double doors of the medical wing slammed open.I didn't let the nurses touch her. I carried Hazel straight into the trauma room myself, my boots leaving wet, bloody tracks across the white linoleum floor. My arms were locked tight around her small body, shaking so hard I could barely stand straight."Alpha, please step back," Doctor Evans urged, his hands hovering over Hazel's pale, bloody form as I gently laid her down on the high hospital bed. "We need room to cut away her clothes and inspect the deep wounds.""I am not leaving her," I growled, my wolf roaring under my skin. The thought of stepping even three feet away from her made my chest tighten until I couldn't breathe. Two years. Two whole years of living in hell, believing her bones were rotting in some dark ditch. I was never letting go again."Lucian, let them work," a soft, trembling voice came from behind me.I spun around.Kayla was s

    Lucian's POV The sirens didn't just ring through the house; they hit my chest like a physical blow, vibrating right through the stone floorboards beneath my boots.I was already at the edge of the second-floor balcony when the massive oak front doors groaned under the force of guards throwing them open. My wolf surged under my skin, claws threatening to burst from my knuckles. For ten long months, I had ruled this territory like a stone wall. I was calm. I was cold. I was the Alpha who felt nothing, who calculated every trade route and signed every ledger without a single trace of emotion.But those sirens meant only one thing: an absolute breach at the inner perimeter."Alpha!" Cole yelled from the lower floor, his heavy boots skittering across the polished floorboards. He was sprinting toward the main courtyard, his sword drawn, his face twisted in a look of sheer, unadulterated panic. "Clear the foyer! Move!" My Bata barked.I didn't use the stairs. I leapt straight over the wood

    Kayla's POV "Ten months," Beta Cole said, laying a thick leather folder on my desk with a soft thud. "Ten months, and our gold reserves have doubled."I didn't look up from the trade ledger I was signing. "Did the western border guards get their winter boots, Cole?""Delivered yesterday," he replied and pulled out the heavy wooden chair across from me and sat down, studying my face for a long moment. "You look tired, Kayla.""I’m fine," I said, capping my fountain pen. "How are the new recruits performing?""Jax led the morning patrol without a single mistake," Cole said, a rare, genuine smile touching his lips. "He credits you for breaking his bad habits.""He broke them himself," I said softly. "I just gave him a reason to pay attention."Bata Cole sighed, leaning forward with his elbows resting on his knees. "The elders were talking this morning. They know what you've done for this pack. Ten months ago, people were whispering behind your back. Now? There isn't a warrior on that fi
