Amelia's POV

For a moment, I couldn't believe my ears. Ray was staring at Jackie with her mouth in a big O, and Jackie was still looking at me with that annoying smirk.

My fists clenched.

"What did you just call me?" I demanded.

"Slut," she repeated, her smirk going wider. "I mean, we all know that's what you are. No point in getting mad about it. Elijah was what, the third guy in two months?

The fact that you're here must mean that he escaped your clutches."

I was trembling with rage now.

"How dare you—"

"Oh, please," Jackie scoffed. "Don't start acting all righteous now. Just try to be grateful that I still let you come here, and I might even think about letting you have a good time."

With that, she turned around and began to walk away. Like hell she got to do that.

She had not taken more than three steps when I caught up to her, grabbed her hair and pulled it with all my strength. She cried out in pain, clutching at her head as she tried to wriggle out of my grip. I dragged her to the pool's edge and shoved her in with a huge splash.

Then I dusted my hands and continued walking to the other end of the pool. Ray stood in shock for a moment, her eyes wide as dinner plates, because she went to help Jackie out of the water.

To my surprise, the other women were cheering when I reached them.

"You really put her in her place," one of them said.

"I'm probably going to get thrown out for the trouble," I replied with a sigh, turning to look back at Jackie.

"Nah, she'll get over it," another said. "You always did."

What did that mean? Was it Jackie's habit to get on Isabella's nerves? Well, of course it was. Like all mean girls, she was clearly the type to be mean to others just for the heck of it.

Just as they had said, Jackie did not confront me or anything. She just sat at a distance, giving me dagger looks. Ray stayed with her, but the other women didn't pay her any attention.

"So, sit down, Bella," one said. "Mandy and I were just talking about her upcoming bash."

Since there were two of them, it was clear which one was Mandy. I turned to her with a smile, glad to feel a little less lost.

"Are you throwing a party, Mandy?" I asked.

"Gosh, no!" she exclaimed. "Just a little something with you guys. I'm thinking a shopping trip."

"Shopping sounds nice," not-Mandy said.

"You're coming, right?" Mandy added.

"Uh… yeah," I replied.

"Yay," the other woman said. "It's about time you started hanging out with us again."

"Angela!" Mandy scolded. "You know what it means when she attends Jackie's hangouts!"

'Oh. So the other woman is named Angela,' I thought. 'I will keep that in mind. Wait, when I attend Jackie's hangouts?'

"What are you talking about?" I asked.

"I attended because Jackie invited me."

"Yeah…" Mandy said. "But we all know you don't get along with Jackie. None of us do, to be honest. We're just with her because our parents are friends with her parents and our social standing sort of benefits from it."

"The only time you're ever desperate enough to attend her hangouts is when you don't want to be alone," Angela added. "So, I'm guessing you broke up with Elijah."

"Angela!" Mandy whispered. Then she turned to me with an eager look on her face. "But wait, did you?"

"Yeah, give us the tea, girl!" Angela encouraged.

I laughed awkwardly.

"Maybe later," I said.

They looked ready to protest, but I was saved by Ray's arrival. She tapped my shoulder, and I turned to see a somber look on her face.

"Can we talk, Bella?" she said.

"Sure," I replied.

I stood up and we walked some distance away. From their place at the poolside, Mandy and Angela watched us curiously.

"What did you do that for, Bella?" Ray asked.

"Do what?" I replied.

"What you did. To Jackie. That wasn't nice at all."

Was this woman for real?

"What, because her calling me a slut was nice?" I retorted.

"You should know by now that that's just the way Jackie is. She never actually means any harm. Besides, it's kind of your fault too. You did steal Elijah from her."

It took all my strength to keep my jaw from dropping. I couldn't resist blurting out "what?!"

"What are you shocked about?" Ray snapped. "She clearly told us all that she was going to go after him. Hell, she introduced us to the guy and when we met to talk about how she was going to go about getting his attention, you suddenly announced that you were dating him already."

Wait a second, this was the first I was hearing of this. Isabella really should have told me that, at least. What the hell was wrong with her?!

Ray was still frowning at me, waiting for me to say something. I couldn't exactly tell that I didn't know about it. I had to save face somehow.

"Oh, please, it's not like he was her boyfriend yet or anything," I scoffed, rolling my eyes. "Besides, if he liked her, he wouldn't have fallen for me. Him falling for me shows that she never stood a chance in the first place."

"So what, you've dated him for less than three weeks and dumped him already?" she demanded.

"Hello? Are you implying that I should date him forever just because Jackie wanted him?" I retorted. "A girl is allowed to get bored."

Ray was giving me an odd look, as if I had suddenly changed color.

"What the hell is wrong with you?" she said. "You're acting strange. You never used to attack Jackie before, or act so proud of hurting your friends."

Her voice dropped.

"Who the hell are you?"

Amelia's POVMy mind went blank. For a full moment, I could only stare at Ray, struggling to get my expression under control.'Calm down, Amelia,' I told myself. 'She hasn't found out. There is no way she could have possibly found out.'"What are you talking about?" I said, forcing out a laugh. "I'm Isabella Domitia. Who else could I be, the boogeyman?""This is not the time for your stupid jokes," Ray snapped. "You've clearly changed since you began to date Elijah. What the hell happened to you, because you're not the Bella I know."I was so relieved, I could have flown away. Ray hadn't meant the question literally. I hadn't blown my cover."You mean I'm not Jackie's little pushover anymore?" I retorted. "I choose to call that an improvement.""Being mean isn't going to make anything better!" Ray said."I think you should save that lecture for Jackie," I replied."Stop bringing up Jackie!" Ray complained. "We're talking about you here.""Are we, really?" I replied. "Do you want to kn

Amelia's POVI blinked. What the… she was in love with Julian Lake? As in, the Julian Lake whose heart I was supposed to steal before the year ended? I mean, I knew I was going to have a lot of rivals, obviously, this was Julian Lake we were talking about, after all.I just never imagined it would be someone this… close. A love rivalry that becomes personal is one of the messy things I've done my best to avoid my whole life.Mandy and Angela were cheering, but their voices were drowned out by the white noise in my head.'So, what, am I supposed to compete with Ray for his affection?' I thought. 'Hell, no.'It was at that moment that Mandy chose to tap me, jolting me out of my thoughts."What do you think, Bella?" she asked, flashing a grin at me."What do I think about what?" I replied."About Ray's crush, duh! We're drawing up a plan for how they're going to become a couple!" she announced, sounding very pleased with herself. Amelia's POVGreat.Just great. I was currently dressed in a jacket over silk pyjamas, walking with Mandy and Angela into a party which one of my supposed boyfriends took part in organizing. And here I thought I always made smart decisions.Angela and Mandy did not seem bothered by any of this. They were laughing excitedly, dragging me forward by both hands."Stop dragging your feet, Bella!" Mandy said, shouting to be heard over the loud music."For the millionth time," I said. "We're wearing pyjamas.""Doesn't matter," she replied. "My brother's friends are chill guys. They won't mind."The moment we stepped into the room, I wanted to turn and walk right back out. Nancy and I had done our share of clubbing, but this was wilder than anything we had ever attended. The place was packed, and so hot it was stifling. The music was blaring loudly enough to give somebody a panic attack. As if that wasn't enough, there were couples making out on practically every surface, bodies moving agains

Amelia's POVBeing Isabella Domitia was turning out so well. First it was horrible parents and a crazy foster brother. Then a business that was going bankrupt, a ridiculous solution to the problem, and ex boyfriends I kept tripping over, one of whom should be in a psychiatric hospital. Not to mention friends that sucked— Mandy and Angela were okay, though— and a party I neither had the desire nor the money to organize. And now my dear old parents were taking me to this birthday party being hosted by some wealthy friend of theirs.Wait, did I say they were taking me?No, they literally forced Jeremy and I into the car like hostages.I snuck a peek at him from the corner of my eye, only to see him tugging at his bowtie with a frown, as if it had personally offended him. He must have felt me looking, because he looked up to stare straight at me. I looked away immediately, but when I chanced a brief glance at him, he was still staring intently at me.'Weird,' I thought, choosing to look o

Amelia's POVGetting champagne poured on me was a terrible experience. The liquid soaked my hair, messing up my coiffure, and dripped down my face onto my dress. I was forced to stand there in shock, blinking champagne away from my lashes and feeling my cheeks heat up with embarrassment."Now you know how it feels to be mistreated," the man said smugly. How was a grown man behaving like a kindergartner? Who still poured wine on people these days, anyway? All because I refused to talk to him?My fists clenched at my sides and I glared at him, wanting nothing more than to put my fist through his stupid face.People were starting to notice what happened. I could hear whispers as the other guests turned in our direction.I didn't need to look to know that they were recording, and being Isabella Domitia meant that I couldn't get into a fight that could end up on the internet. However, the last thing I expected was for Jeremy to walk quickly over to me, taking off his suit jacket. Amelia's POVJulian Lake was already at the eatery when I arrived. I stared at the screen of my phone, just to make sure that I hadn't lost track of time, and looked back at where he was sitting stiffly at a table. Then I shrugged and walked over to him. Before I could open my mouth to speak, he said "You're late."In a scolding tone, as if I was a child.I blinked at him in surprise and confusion."I'm not late," I replied. "You're just too early.""You arranged for us to meet by one, and this is three minutes after that," he said."Exactly," I replied, taking the chair across from him. "At least you haven't ordered yet.""Why should I?" he retorted. "I'm just here to take my jacket back.""Yes, you are," I said, placing a bag on the table. Inside it was the jacket, dry-cleaned and ironed and folded. It looked immaculate, and I was pretty proud of myself even though I hadn't done any of that work. When he reached for it, I pulled it out of his reach. Julian Lake flicked me a look th

Amelia's POV"By the way," he said later, while we were leaving the eatery, "if all you want to do is stop your ex boyfriends from bothering you, why didn't you make a deal with some other man?""Why did I come to you?" I replied. "Well, you're the only man whose jacket is in my possession, so I said why not. And you helped me out at the bar too, so I know you're somehow a gentleman.""Somehow," he repeated, huffing a laugh."Yup, somehow," I replied, grinning. "But it's mostly because you're the only one I could think of who is actually powerful enough to be a threat to my ex-boyfriends."My answers weren't lies. They just weren't truths either, and I shoved down the guilt that reminder brought with it.'You are the only man in the city, aside from Mr Domitia and Jeremy, who aren't total strangers to me,' I thought. 'And you are the only one that can save me from losing this new life I just got. I'm sorry I can't tell you the truth. But I am very grateful, Julian."……I decided that

I might have ran, but it felt like I had teleported.I literally scrambled out of Julian's car as fast as I could, my heartbeat hammering in my ears, and next I knew, I was in my room locking the doors and windows.I was shaking with fear, and I kept looking around like someone might have followed me home. I was about to dial Jackie's number when a notification popped up at the top of my screen. As soon as I looked at it, I screamed, and the phone dropped from my hands. Jackie said that the drug was supposed to make her more… cooperative, but I should have known that Jackie was lying again. I was getting the report from this guy now, and I was so disappointed to learn that she was actually fighting him off. That wasn't going to look good for the rumor I was trying to spread.Everyone was supposed to see her being a slut, not resisting like that. What were the odds? The one time I needed her to be a pick me girl, she disappointed. That left me sitting on my bed and editing the video on my laptop. The earlier I sent it out, the earlier everyone could see the sort of person she was. The earlier JULIAN LAKE could see the sort of person she was. Then he would break up with her, and the coast would be clear for me to win his heart. At least that was what Jackie promised me when she came up with this plan. Hopefully, she wasn't lying this time.My hands paused

I did remember being attended to by a number of maids, who had helped keep my body cool and given me medicine that helped me throw up whatever Ray had drugged me with.I knew now that it was Ray who had drugged me. Now that I could think clearly, I remembered that the only thing I had taken was that lemonade she handed to me.I still couldn't believe that she of all people would do something like that. If it had been Jackie, I would have expected it, but Ray?I knew we had our issues, but I never would have imagined that she was that sort of person. Well. We never really knew anyone, did we?I was still lost in thought when I heard a knock on the door. I looked up just in time to see a young maid poke her head in."Miss Domitia?" she said. I had agreed to call, not text, but I really didn't think I could talk right now.I put the phone away and pressed the towel tighter to my forehead, squeezing my eyes shut as I waited for Ray to come back. She probably went to get the aspirin. But I waited and waited, and she didn't come back. My shivering was getting worse, and I dropped the towel to wrap my arms around my body.I was starting to sweat, and my clothes were scratching uncomfortably against my skin. Not only were Julian and I going on another date, but we had also gotten closer since the first one. Also, Genevieve Lopez and I had become sort of friends, and I was also friendly with the other women who had attended the bachelorette party. She had more or less initiated me into the "friends of Genevieve Lopez" club.I was even given a special invitation to her wedding.I was doing a little dance in front of my mirror as I inspected my outfit for the day.It was a yellow, flowery sundress that matched the yellow ribbon tying me hair up in a ponytail. Underneath it, I was wearing a swimsuit because for our second date, Julian and I were going boating at the Lovers' Lake. It was this sparkling lake with swans on the surface, and pretty much every couple went there at least once. There were all sorts of tales about how it blessed the love of any couple that visited it.It sounded li
