Elena woke to a soft light and the smell of clean linen, so different from the smell of the trash bin that for a moment she thought she was still dreaming. Elena ran without knowing where the corridor led. She only knew it had to end somewhere other than another locked room. Her feet left wet prints on the tile behind her, blood from the wound dripping down her arm, and she pressed it against her side to slow the bleeding without stopping her legs. The hand that closed around Elena's arm was hard and rough, and it yanked her backward before she could scream. She hit the wall of the corridor, and the man holding her cursed under his breath and reached for her other arm to pin her still. Elena's vision swam from the drugs still working through her body, but the pain in her shoulder and the burning in her bandaged arm cut through the fog enough to make her fight.She still had the broken chair leg in her hand, the metal edge jagged where it had torn free of the hinge, and she swung it back without thinking and drove it into the man's forearm.
