Chapter 1

Author: Yulia Fish
As Cassie Young’s mind went blank, a barrage of comments burst across an interface feed midair.

[Holy cow! Has the side character lost it? She’s basically giving away three elite boyfriends to our heroine!]

[Don’t hesitate, girl! This is a godsend. Cassie will be set for life just by snagging one of them. No wonder Poppy Stait’s the extra. She doesn’t know what she’s throwing away.]

By the sparkle in Cassie’s eyes, it was clear that she was hooked on the offer. Still, she stared at me warily.

“Let’s get one thing straight. Once you hand these guys over, they are mine to keep. No take-backs!”

“Duh.”

I nodded and smiled harmlessly.

“You’re my best friend. It wouldn’t feel right to keep all the good things to myself.

“Relax. I’ve met the tech guy, but the other two don’t even know what I look like. Just keep your story straight, and everything’s golden.

“The question is—who are you picking?”

[Talk about the dilemma of the century. How do you choose between a legal heartthrob, a research titan, and a billionaire CEO?

[Why choose? Cassie is the heroine. With her main character's privileges, she can sweep them off their feet.”

Cassie licked her lips, her eyes gleaming with greed.

“Why should I settle for one? I want all three of your boyfriends.

“You have plenty going on for you anyway, Poppy. It’s not like you’re short of options.”

Her answer didn’t surprise me in the slightest. With a smile, I held out an open palm to Cassie.

“Sure. That’ll be a million bucks for each. Are you paying my commission by card or cash?”

Startled, Cassie turned ashen.

“I thought we were besties. Why are you asking for money?”

“It’s better to keep things clear even between friends. I mean, I invested a lot of time and effort into vetting and bonding with these guys.”

I pouted as if my feelings were hurt. “If you believe I’m asking for too much, let’s just forget the whole thing. I’d hate for money to come between us.”

“No, it’s not that. A million dollars is a lot of money. Where on earth am I going to find that kind of money?”

Before Cassie could get another word out, the bullet chat jumped in with advice.

[Don’t be silly, girl! It’s just a million. Sell your property, and you’re good. You’re going to regret it if you let those billionaires slip through your fingers!]

[The side character is just a bimbo. Her looks are the only thing she has going for her. She thinks she’s making a killing, but the three guys are the main characters. They are worth way more. Just wait until she realizes what she lost!]

[Can’t wait for our baby girl to bag all three of them and come back to humiliate the side character.]

Cassie stared at the virtual screen with a deluded smile as if the fantasy was within reach.

“Fine! You’ll get the money.

“I’ll get the funds. Make sure you hold onto them. Don't give them away to someone else.”

After much thought, Cassie added with a straight face. “And stay in your lane. Keep your hands off my future husbands. I don’t want something that’s already been around!”

On the other end of the line, the landlord didn’t even have a chance to finish speaking because Marc ended the call. “The three of us have talked, and we’ve given ourselves a year of fair competition for the position as your future husband. “Of course, you can call it off anytime. You have the right to drop us all and walk away. “But I trust, given our connection, your pick will clearly be—” Camden shouldered Marc out of the way as the latter reached for my hand. “Poppy, I nurtured this orchid in the lab and named it after you. “Given the way you care for plants, this orchid can basically survive it all. It’s resistant to drought, overwatering, and even fire. Anyway, so long as I am around, you can be sure that you and the plant will be perfectly cared for—” Holding his bouquet of orchids, Camden was cut short as Trevor pushed past him.“I’ve drafted a cohabitation contract with all the responsibilities allocated. Camden is in charge of disposing of his lab waste. Marc c

“Cut the act.” Marc took a step forward, closing the distance between us. “Cassie doesn’t even come close to you. She didn’t catch the contract loopholes I often miss, and she nearly cost us our core tech patent.“The firm would be history by now if I hadn’t spotted the mistake in time.” He paused, his voice turning dead serious. “Come back, and I’ll triple your pay. I’ll throw in a 5% stake in the business as well. “Just name your price.” I frowned. “Get a grip, Marc. I’m not into you.” “That’s fine. I’ll just have to win you over.” He was unfazed. “Time is the one thing I have plenty of.” Then came another knock on the door. With my chest tightening, I opened the door and was stunned. There were Camden and Trevor right outside my door. …Camden’s eyes darkened with a mix of emotions when he saw Marc by my side. “Poppy, are you avoiding me because of him? “I know I messed up, but I’ve cleared the air with you. What does it take for you to forgive me?” Trevor

“With the right execution, you’ll have Marc eating out of the palm of your hand.” The light returned to Cassie’s eyes, and her sobbing stopped. “Are you saying that he’ll fall for me if I can fix his problems?” “Pretty much.” I nodded. “He’s the type who cares about what you can bring to the table. “We are both trained in law. Once I give you the inside scoops on his quirks and my go-to approaches to navigating his antics, you’ll fill my role without a hitch.” Cassie scrambled to her feet, her spirits lifted. “Awesome! Hand in your resignation now. I’m counting on you to put in the good word for me.” … Without delay, I fired off my resignation letter to Marc that very afternoon. At the same time, I forwarded Cassie’s resume to HR, attaching my recommendation for her to take over my responsibilities with immediate effect. Working fast, HR sent Cassie her offer letter the next day. Before Cassie’s first day, I put together a cheat sheet, detailing Marc’s quirks and

“You took my money, and yet, here you are, throwing yourself at Trevor. Do you think you can just walk all over me?” I staggered, dumbfounded by the absurdity of it all as she yanked me. “You got it all wrong. The school invited me to be here as a distinguished alumna, not for anything else.” “Have I?” Cassie scoffed. “You are alone with him in the waiting room. He’s practically inches away from your face, and I’m supposed to take it as a misunderstanding? Do you take me for an idiot?” … Furrowing his brows, Trevor came forward and pulled Cassie away. His tone was icy. “Please show some restraint, miss.” Cassie turned to Trevor, her eyes welling up. “Don’t fall for her lies, Trevor. She charged me a million dollars to step in and date you online in her place. “Yet, she won’t leave you alone. She’s a scammer.” Trevor was taken aback. “Is what she’s saying true?” It was in my best interest to deny that fact, but before I could get a word out, Trevor cut me off.

“Mr. Mynard mentioned that he’d like to connect with some outstanding alumni. I saved you a spot, so you’d better show up.” …I was stunned. What were the odds? Before I could say no, my professor added. “You’re the pride of our school. Some of the students are dying for your advice on internships. I won’t take no for an answer.” At that point, I wasn’t in a position to refuse. In the end, I gave in. When Wednesday rolled around, I arrived at Camvard University ahead of time. I had barely reached the law school auditorium when a student volunteer ushered me into a waiting room. “Poppy, feel free to rest here. The session begins in forty minutes. We’ll come get you shortly.” I thanked the volunteer with a smile, and only then did a man sitting on the sofa catch my eye. The man was dressed in a charcoal suit, his sleeves rolled up to reveal a watch on his wrist. A pair of gold-rimmed glasses sat on his nose as he studied the file in his hands. Lifting his head at the

“But it seems I’ve given you the wrong idea. “I noticed something was off from the very first day the switch occurred, but I wasn’t ready to lose that last link to you, so I kept the conversation going. “I know I messed up for not explaining things to you sooner. I hurt you, and that’s why you walked away. “I wanted to see you in person to apologize.” The disappointment and hurt from back then still lingered. Camden’s words stirred a faint ache in a wound I thought had healed. With downcast eyes, I shied away from his intense gaze. “An apology isn’t necessary. Your time is better spent elsewhere than on me, Mr. Forest.” With that, I rose to my feet and strutted out. Camden sat there for a long time, his dejected eyes fixating on my silhouette. “Hold it right there, Poppy!” Outside the café, Cassie caught up to me and yanked me back. “Camden knew from the start that I wasn’t you, so it’s not my fault that the deal fell through. You owe me a replacement!“I-I shou
