Chapter 3

作者: Thousand Slips
To avoid potential run-ins with Logan, I started heading out before dawn and coming back after dark.

I did everything to steer clear of his schedule.

Little did I know, there was a second threat closer than I thought.

It was Cameron Littlejohn, the new guy at the office.

Cameron was an average-looking guy with a pair of black-rimmed glasses.

He looked like the honest, simple type.

The malice value above his head never budged from a 10, which was well within the normal range.

He would grab me a drink or pick up my delivered packages at the office.

To me, he was a helpful and kind colleague.

One day, I worked late into the night.

Cameron and I were the only ones left in the office.

I wanted to grab a cup of coffee in the pantry.

While passing Cameron’s desk, I noticed him staring at the monitor, except the person on the screen was me.

More specifically, it was me at home in my pajamas.

It wasn’t candid photos. No, it was pictures from security footage.

I pulled my hand against my mouth in horror.

Cameron snapped his head back.

The digits above his head jumped straight to 800.

The number practically dripped with lust and obsession.

As it turned out, the 10 was nothing more than a front.

Now that Cameron had been caught, his true malice reared its ugly head.

“So you saw it, Eden?”

Sliding his glasses up his nose, Cameron let out a sickly grin.

His nice-guy act had completely disappeared.

“D-Did you install cameras in my home?”

I backed away.

“There’s no need to be scared.”

Rising to his feet, Cameron inched closer toward me.

“I just love you so much.

“You have no idea how beautiful you are when you sleep.

“My favorite part is when you roll over, holding your blanket.”

He reached for my face.

“Pervert!”

I grabbed the stapler off the desk and hurled it at him.

It struck him right between the eyes.

Blood trickled down his face.

While he clutched his head, I snatched my bag and bolted out of the office.

His exasperated growl echoed behind me.

“Eden, you can’t run forever!”

I rammed the elevator button frantically.

The elevator was stuck on the top floor.

It would take a while for the elevator to descend.

I had to take the stairs.

Fueled by adrenaline, I sprinted down eighteen flights of stairs.

Once out of the office building, I hailed a cab.

“Take me to Greenview Gardens!”

Huddling inside the car, I couldn’t stop myself from shaking.

My phone rang with a notification.

Cameron sent me a photo of my bedroom.

There was a bloody dagger sitting on my bed.

The text read, “I’m coming for you tonight.”

I broke down in tears.

My gut told me to call the cops.

However, what was that going to do?

There was no physical evidence of an assault.

The threat would only put him behind bars for no more than a few days.

Once he got out, he would be back with a vengeance.

I had to move away immediately.

It needed to happen tonight.

By the time I arrived back in the neighborhood, it was nearly ten.

It started raining heavily.

Drenched all over, I dashed into the building.

The elevator was back in service at last.

I hit the button for the sixth floor, and the elevator doors slid shut.

Just as the doors were about to close completely, an arm slipped through the narrowing gap.

The elevator reopened.

Standing on the other side, Logan held the familiar black umbrella.

Water dripped from the tip of his umbrella.

Taken aback by my presence, he furrowed his brows.

The value hovering over his head remained the same at 1,150.

I recoiled in a corner, averting my gaze.

For some strange reason, I felt safer next to Logan than with Cameron.

“Have you been crying?”

He entered the elevator and tapped on the button to close the doors.

Droplets of rain dripped from my hair to the floor.

I wiped my face in a flustered mess.

“No.”

Without another word, he stood there.

In the cramped space, his overwhelming presence closed in on me once more.

However, my fear of Logan had to take a back seat as the menacing look on Cameron’s face occupied my thoughts.

The moment the elevator doors opened on the sixth floor, I whipped out my house keys to open the door.

My hands shook so bad that I couldn’t get the key in the lock.

Logan’s voice crept up from behind me.

“Someone’s inside.”

I paused.

“What?”

“I can hear breathing.”

He pointed at the door of my apartment.

“There’s someone inside, and it’s a man.”

After we got home, Logan fell ill. It was probably the rain, the injuries, and the long trip finally catching up to him.Logan lay in bed, his cheeks flushed from a high fever. Even while unconscious, he had a firm grip on my wrist. The number above his head remained at 9,999+. The figure hadn’t changed, not even once. I fed him medicine and stared at his haggard but defined facial features as emotions overtook my very core. While Logan was out of it, I snuck into his study. It was my first time in his study. Usually, I wasn’t allowed inside.I wanted to do a little searching and find out why his malice level was high. The shelves were filled with books on psychology, criminology, and anatomy. A black diary was locked in a drawer. I found a paperclip and popped the lock open. It was a trick I picked up from thrillers, and who knew it came in handy?I flipped the diary open and read the first page. “Only blood can purify this filthy world.” Sure enough, Logan

“You got the wrong idea.” I tried to explain. “I don’t know him that well. I’m just renting his place…” “Cut the crap!” Stuart slapped me hard in the face. “Don’t get smart with me!” It was a bumpy ride all the way until the van pulled up outside an abandoned chemical plant. Bound to a chair, I was surrounded by oil barrels, the air filled with a pungent chemical odor.Stuart dialed Logan’s number and got through to him for once. “Hello?” “I’ve got your girl. “If you want her to live, come to the chemical plant in the western suburbs alone. “Don’t try anything funny, or I’ll kill her.” The line went quiet. The silence was so long that I thought Logan had hung up. I was nothing but a disobedient pet to him after all. “Fine.” As despair washed over me, he spoke. It was just a word, but it carried immense weight. “Don’t touch her.“If there’s even a scratch on her, I’ll make you wish you were never born.”Even through the phone, the biting chill from h

In the days that followed, I was essentially kept like a pet. Logan forbade me from going out and looking for a job. He said that he would provide for me. My protests fell on deaf ears. As soon as I mentioned leaving the apartment, the pink digits above his head would turn crimson. The value wasn’t quite the malice I’d seen before. However, the sheer weight of his presence was overwhelming. I simply stayed put at home, typing away on my keyboard. It so happened that I needed inspiration for my new book. So I used Logan as the blueprint for a character. It was a story of a psycho killer obsessed with his next-door neighbor. I put his character through hell in the pages. In the end, he was caught and given the death penalty. It was satisfying to kill him off on paper, at least. Just as I wrote “The End”, a cold draft crept up behind me. “The ending isn’t very good.” Logan’s voice boomed hauntingly. When did he get back? “Change it.” Leaning closer,

The rain continued to pour. The air in the alleyway was thick with a sickening stench of blood. I stared vacantly at the pink value of 9,999+ hovering over Logan’s head. My mind went blank. Cameron slumped in a corner, and there was no telling whether he was dead or alive. Judging by the slight rise in his chest, I reckoned he was passed out. Logan didn’t plan on killing him. Maybe he just didn’t want to take a life right in front of me. “Can you walk?” I shook my head. Letting out a sigh, Logan swept me into his arms. I pressed my face against his blood-stained chest, listening to his strong heartbeats, a sharp contrast to my absolute terror. “We’re going home.” He carried me out of the alleyway. In the back, Cameron jerked and let out a pleading whimper. Logan stopped in his tracks. Without looking back, he kicked back with his heel. A pebble flung out and hit Cameron right in the back of the head. The world went quiet. Back in the apartment, Logan

I walked out of the office building, the sunlight was blinding. However, I didn’t feel even a trace of warmth. My phone rang. Heavy breathing came from the other end of the line. “Eden…” The voice belonged to Cameron. He wasn’t dead. I breathed a sigh of relief, only for fear to wash over me. “Where are you?” “Where’s your lover boy? Tell him to show his face!“I want to kill you! I’ll tear you to pieces! “I’m looking right at you…” I jerked my head back. Amid the crowded street, I couldn’t find that silhouette anywhere. However, the malicious gaze on me was hard to ignore. The malice radar went off. In the distance, a man with a baseball cap stood among the crowd. A terrifying, ink-red 5000 pulsed above his head.It was Cameron, and his malice value had soared to 5,000. Something in his hand glinted in the sunlight. He lunged at me. The crowd was oblivious to the danger. I took off running and plunged into a nearby alleyway. It was the only path,

Logan’s home was spotless to the point of being clinical. Everything was minimalist, a palette of black, white, and gray, devoid of unnecessary ornaments. There was very little furniture and not even a TV. A huge carpet lay, crimson in color, in the center of the living room.Fear kept me from stepping on the rug. Instead, I stuck close to the wall. “Feel free to sit wherever.” Logan poured me a drink. It was his own cup, a black mug. Cupping the drink, I could feel my palms burn. “Bathroom’s that way. I’ve put out a fresh towel for you. “You should change out of your wet clothes.” He handed me one of his white shirts. I slipped into the bathroom and locked the door behind me. The bathroom was only stocked with the essentials—shampoo, body wash, and a single toothbrush. It appeared he lived alone. I took a quick shower and put on his shirt. The shirt carried a faint scent of fir, the exact smell lingering on him. I folded back the sleeves and stared at
