Veronica’s POV
“This is for the best. You will be helping the pack and repenting for your mistakes at the same time,” I avoided Jade’s attempt of caressing my face. “Quit pretending to be a good stepmother. There is no audience now,” I told her. “I just wanted to comfort you, dear,” she said and I clenched my fists so that I could ignore her existence inside this closed space. We are in a covered wagon as they escort me, still chained, towards the agreed meeting place. I was told that the exchange would be held there. All I understood was that I would be a peace offering for the treaty. Long ago, Eviera was on par with the Helios pack. But our pack experienced a decline in recent years. We fell off with the Helios pack and with the power that they accumulated now, our pack cannot stand against theirs so we remain in the shadows to avoid conflict given our ugly history. It was not clear what the exact cause of the bad blood was but we were not able to patch up with them for 20 years. I tried looking outside in the dark. My abilities are still weakened because of my current health and the cuffs on me. I wanted to know where we were but it was too hard to make out without my full night vision. With a guess, it will probably be by the Grand Border that separates the territory of the Helios pack from the rest of the North. This time of the year, the melting of snow is beginning and the neutral cold is nearing. I could smell it in the air and the trees in the forest. I could feel Colton’s eyes on me ever since we started travelling in the wagon. But I never looked at him again. He makes me sick. Suddenly, my train of thoughts were interrupted by someone placing a hand on mine. It was my stepsister, Ruby. They call Ruby an angel, a soft-hearted girl. I have always been too formal and self reserved for others and we always got compared to each other. She was warm and kind and jolly. I was cold and firm and dull. I have always been aware of some pack members saying that she was more befitting of a Luna. There was a time I believed it too. There was a time where I was fooled by her kind face too. “Nica, I’m really sorry that this happened to you,” she told me softly. I harshly took my hand away, “Don’t touch me and never call me Nica again.” “Don’t talk to her like that,” Colton instantly chimed in annoyingly. “It’s okay, Cole,” Ruby answers in her screechy high soft voice. “She’s just in a bad situation right now, her emotions are valid. Please understand.” “You're too kind, Ruby.” My eyes could roll to the back of my head and never come back with how much I want to gag from her pretentious kindness. Remembering how I did believe her made my hatred feel worse with the awareness of my stupidity. Then, the wagon finally stopped. One of the Betas took a peek inside to inform us, “We have arrived, Alpha.” They started dragging me again and I watched as some of the pack members who accompanied us were in their wolf form for security. We were around ten in total. The high trees are the same as in our territory. The biggest difference, though, is the evident gold shining line that establishes the Grand Border. Then, a river could be seen from where we are before it opens to the vast forest that the Helios pack rules over. I was tuning out the entire conversation and the handshaking that occurred. There were only three figures from the Helios side and none of them were shifted. My empty feeling never went away. I have no other thoughts. I don't even know if I have a future across that borderline. Maybe a nightmare to live or a few more breaths before death. Nonetheless, I have nothing. So I was only empty from here on. Just before the actual exchange and throwing of me towards the clutches of our enemy clan, I heard Ruby asking permission to talk to me and a second after, she was just in front of me. Then, she hugged me, her back against everyone else. And she confessed her real feelings. “I finally got rid of you, sister. I have always wanted you gone Veronica,” I could feel her vicious smirk and the way her long claws pierced my shoulders under her fake hug. She added, “You used to have everything but now they are mine.” She was a fake saint. I knew that. Yet I didn't recognize the stepsister I thought of as a real one before. I had no other chance to say anything back, nor did I want to waste any more energy on these people. I just want to leave them behind even if I walk down a darker path. I was escorted by someone from Helios that I did not bother to look at. I just continued staring ahead, staring forward. I will not look back. A loud howl of the wolf from the dark forests in front of me echoed loudly. It was probably a howl for the entire continent to hear. I am not sure what for. But one thing I am certain of, as I looked ahead, I saw bloody red eyes staring at me.Thank you for reading! I am very, very grateful for the people who reached here. This has been a long journey and also my first novel. It means a lot that you gave this story a chance and stayed until the end. Truly, I appreciate it. If I could track the comments, I would personally thank each and everyone for the support. In all honesty, there are things I regret and wish to have done better during the entire writing process. I do feel guilty about leaving this hanging for a while and what I have lacked in some aspects—I apologize for that. I faced some unexpected hurdles along the way and went through a very tough writer’s block and challenge of picking this up. For what it’s worth, I tried. To everyone who remained patient and still read, thank you. The last few special chapters are for loose ends I may or may not be able to write. I’m not sure if I’d be given another chance to expand on this story with a sequel like I planned in my head so I wrote the extras to at least wrap it
Sebastian’s POVHelios has been the warmest it has ever been.Or at least that’s how it feels to me despite the eternal winter of the North. From afar, I could make out Veronica’s figure. She was crouched down and talking with a group of elders and youngsters alike. They were in a circle around a bonfire at the center of the town square. This has become one of the newest traditions in the kingdom. We’ve always been a pack of deep loyalty and respect to each other—yet the walls are still there. Veronica came to our territory and broke those walls like she did with mine.Suddenly it’s warmer in Helios even in the winter.“Alpha Sebastian,” said in unison by the people who saw me approach.llThe others finally noticed my presence and they all bowed down to me while I stopped and stood behind my wife.I raised my hand to dismiss their gestures and spoke, “Might if I steal the Luna from you?” I asked with a grin.Veronica looked over her shoulder and met my eyes. “Well, I guess my escort
Third Person’s POVNew Helios continues to thrive and grow under the leadership of the Rozeiros triplets. The three alphas resumed their duties once they came back to Aethiuopia after the debacle in their brother’s kingdom. They fell into their usual routine like they never left. Rowan is currently stuck in a court meeting with their officials, discussing the reports to catch up on what they missed when they were away and also reviewing the postponed works that need their approval—such tasks that the other two hate and find tedious so inevitably, it falls on him.Declan said he’ll be organizing their archives and artifacts but somehow, the silence and peacefulness of rows and rows of books and objects lulled him to sleep in one a corner; it was always his excuse though. In reality, he can start snoring anywhere he could consume space. Meanwhile, Nolan, ever the unruly and mischievous of the three, was currently climbing a balcony in the middle of the day. He jumped to hide behind o
Third Person’s POVThe moon hid itself from the world tonight. The kingdom of Helios was peaceful, oblivious of the scenes that were unfolding in the shadows. Their king and queen just left a few days ago for a short vacation. The Beta was left in charge to monitor the pack. Thankfully, winter has subsided a bit these days.In the dark of the dead night, only the iridescent blue glow of the arch illuminated the woods. Behemoth wolves lie snoring by the foot of the portal.A silhouette sat perched on the branch of a nearby tree, golden eyes glared at the opened entrance, waiting for something… for someone. The winter wind howled into the eerie silence. Veronica’s POV I have never been happier—we have never been happier than this day. Without restrictions and inhibitions, we got to enjoy ourselves away from everyone but us. Along the way, Sebastian tackled me to the ground and we rolled over, messing around the snow. We crossed to the uncharted and unclaimed lands of the North. Nothing really is around except forests. It took a while until I reached the place I was trying to show him. It was already sunset when we arrived. My wolf slowed down and stopped before the clearing. Sebastian followed and halted beside me, gawking at the view in front of us. We shifted back to our human forms as the sun slowly descended, casting an orange hue to the sky. The snow stops around here. The forest is lush although this is the last stretch of the continent before opening to the large body of water. “I found this by accident during our hunting competition,” I said looking at the view. “We can’t really go far and take a break yet but this
Veronica’s POVAfter telling him my plan, I parted ways with Keldor once we reached the center of the forests.Sensing my environment, I focused to locate where Sebastian is through our bond. The moment I opened my eyes, I started dashing through the trees and reached where he was in the woods. When I started to make out his figure using my heightened sight, I slowed down to cloak my presence. I wanted to ambush him.Sebastian was just finishing up, removing a sharpened stick from a deer while I hid behind a trunk of the nearby tree. I smiled to myself as he looked clueless. Then, I prepared to attack him. However, when I looked in his direction again, he was nowhere to be found.“What the…” I stepped out slowly and sensed my environment, scanning my surroundings. He’s still near, I could feel it through our connection yet I can’t find a trace of him anywhere. As I turned around to the direction of the tree where I hid, he suddenly appeared in front of me.“I see I found a sneaky
