Chapter 4

Author: Brandy Branch
Watching Frank's back as he walked upstairs, I stood there with tears burning my eyes. My legs gave out, and I almost lost my balance.

I remembered when we first bought this house. Frank had excitedly picked me up and spun me around the living room twice.

“Willow, we finally have a home of our own! I'll fill this home, little by little, with our love.”

For two whole years, I had poured my heart and soul into furnishing this home.

I thought it was a little world that belonged to just Frank and me, until the first time Frank gave Rachel the door passcode.

The first time, she was picking up some documents for him. The second time, she was making food for his mother in his place...

Then, little by little, I began noticing my home slippers, new shirts from my walk-in closet, and brand-new jewelry I'd just bought, still unopened, showing up on Rachel.

Frank kept explaining that Rachel was his childhood friend. I kept changing the door passcode, and he kept sending Rachel the new one.

It was like we were trapped in a vicious loop.

And now, Rachel had even moved into my home with a “Limited-Time Pre-Wedding Girlfriend Experience Card.”

This relationship I'd once been so certain about seemed to have reached a dead end.

In the evening, the doorbell rang. I came out of the kitchen and opened the door. An installer was standing outside.

“Excuse me, are you Ms. Rachel Sullivan? The smart shoe cabinet you ordered online has arrived.”

Rachel came running downstairs in a strappy nightgown.

“Finally! Now I'll have somewhere to place my high heels!”

Rachel watched the workers install the shoe cabinet, then ushered me back into the kitchen.

“Willow, Frank said you're really good at making garlic butter shrimp. I'll leave dinner to you tonight!”

Right after that, the doorbell kept ringing.

A new dehumidifier, projector, mattress, and other things were brought into the house...

Before dinner, the new double-door refrigerator Rachel had ordered was delivered. She directed the deliverymen to move my refrigerator out of the kitchen.

The narrow space somehow managed to squeeze in the double-door refrigerator.

“Willow, consider this refrigerator my wedding gift to you! Next time your mom sends you pickles, you won't have to throw them in the trash.

“And now there's room for the drinks and face masks I like!”

As she spoke, Rachel had already taken a picture of my refrigerator and listed it for sale on a secondhand marketplace.

The price was only 500 dollars.

I watched from the side with an indifferent expression as the refrigerator scraped a deep mark into my carefully customized cabinets.

“Rachel, this is my home. I don't need any of this.”

I was about to speak when Frank came downstairs and put an arm around Rachel's shoulders.

“Not bad, Rachel. As expected of my best buddy. You bought everything I like.”

The two of them put their arms around each other and left the kitchen to play a two-player game in the living room, leaving me standing there alone, looking disheveled in my apron with a spatula in my hand.

When Monday came, I was plunged into my final stretch of busyness before taking time off for my wedding.

I was revising a proposal on my computer when Caryn Kirk, my coworker, suddenly tapped my desk.

“Willow, doesn't this little cat look just like your Pipi?

“A male cat with Pipi's quality would probably cost more than two thousand dollars for one breeding session, right?”

I turned to Caryn's phone in shock.

On a secondhand marketplace listing was a carefully photographed picture of an adorable little cat. The deion read:

[One-year-old male cat, raised on premium cat food and homemade cat meals, healthy and gentle. Stud service: 2,000 dollars per session.]

The background in the photo was unmistakably my living room. Pipi's favorite little fish toy was even lying inside the cat house.

Pipi was being held by a hand, staring helplessly at the camera with wide eyes.

I immediately opened the seller's profile.

There, three days earlier, the seller had posted another secondhand listing:

[Refrigerator, 98% new, special clearance price: 500 dollars.]

It was my old refrigerator.

It was Rachel!

A new comment immediately appeared beneath the breeding-service listing.

[Can you deliver to Florence Residence for the breeding service? Unit 23. My cat has a bad temper. If the breeding is successful, the price is negotiable.]

The seller immediately replied:

[Anytime. I have medication for male cats at home. Guaranteed successful breeding. DM me if you're interested.]

I shot up from my desk, took off my employee ID badge, and opened the security camera for the living room at home.

However, the app showed that the camera had gone offline ten minutes earlier.

“This is my Pipi. Someone sent him out for breeding without my knowledge!”

I immediately got up to take leave, and Caryn went with me as we hurried straight to Florence Residence.

On the way, I was frantic with worry and called the police.

“Hello, I'd like to report a burglary!”

Frank had lost a lot of weight. He was wearing the coat I'd bought for him, only now it hung much more loosely on him.His eyes were slightly sunken, no longer possessing the handsome, polished air of the refined young man he'd once been.Standing in front of me, he'd lost the former elegance and composure. All that remained was caution. The former heir of the Hortons had even lost the halo that used to surround him.I pretended not to see him and continued toward the stairwell."Willow, can we talk?"I stopped and turned to look at him."What do you want to talk about?"Frank was silent for a moment."I want to apologize to you.""Rachel has developed depression. Whenever she sees me, she goes crazy and hits me. Her mother stays home to take care of her every day now. If she's not careful, Rachel might do something drastic."My mom and I had a huge fight. She thinks you've completely bewitched me and that I refuse to admit my mistakes. I haven't gone home in a long time."

Xavier was typing, and a series of professional analyses followed one after another. Two minutes later, he sent another message."Typing is a hassle. There's a café downstairs from my law firm. Would you be available to meet there and talk, Ms. Newton?"I thought for a moment before replying, "Sure."Half an hour later, I met Xavier at the café.He was dressed in a suit, looking composed and refined, and gave me a slight nod."Hello, Ms. Newton."We shook hands, and I couldn't shake the feeling that I'd seen him somewhere before. After talking things over with Xavier, I handed Pipi's case over to him completely. The next time we met was at the police station, when Rachel asked to see me.Xavier accompanied me to meet her. The moment she saw me, she grabbed my hand and pleaded with me."Willow, I know I was wrong. I really am sorry!"I was completely out of my mind before. I thought it wouldn't be a big deal! I'm willing to return everything I earned to you, and I'll compens

"Frank, I'm warning you. I've already installed security cameras. If you show up at my house again, I'll call the police."I took a step back into the house, my face full of disgust."Today, I'll be notifying my family. I hope you also make sure your family understands that I don't want another situation like today, where your mother calls to lecture me about how I should 'know better.'"Otherwise, don't blame me if I say some unpleasant things."Frank's face went pale."My mom contacted you?"I'm sorry. I didn't know..."I let out a cold laugh."You didn't know? Don't you know what your mother is like? You went to her and exaggerated all the things I've supposedly done wrong. Did you really think she could sit back and do nothing?"Frank was speechless.Of course he knew. He'd simply wanted to use the pressure from Olivia to force me to back down."Willow, this is all my fault. I didn't handle any of this properly."But isn't this doing too much damage to Rachel? She's jus

"Thank goodness, Willow. You finally picked up!"Olivia Horton’s voice sounded exhausted. "Frank told me everything that happened yesterday."Frank and Rachel were in the wrong. That whole 'Limited-Time Pre-Wedding Girlfriend Experience Card' was absolutely ridiculous!"Willow, don't be angry. I'll bring Frank and Rachel over to apologize to you in person. I promise we won't let Rachel do anything inappropriate or cross any lines again."As for your cat, I heard about that, too. Nothing happened to him, did it?"A cat isn't a person. What Rachel did was certainly inappropriate, but you can't make a girl face criminal charges over that cat.‘That cat,’ I thought. That was the only impression Olivia had of Pipi.Never mind that nothing had happened. Even if something had happened, he was still just a cat. There was no way he could compare to Rachel."Olivia, my grandmother went with me to get this cat before she passed away. Pipi is what she left behind for me to remember her by

There was a brief silence on the other end of the line. Before he could say anything, I hung up.I contacted a veterinary hospital I was familiar with and took Pipi in for a checkup that night.Although Pipi wasn't as energetic as he used to be, thankfully, there was nothing wrong with his physical health."We recommend spending more time with your pets when you’re not working. They're lonely at home, too."To think there are actually people who would exploit someone else's pet to make a quick buck. She should be punished to the fullest extent."The veterinarian I knew kept reassuring me and even gave me a bag of Pipi's favorite freeze-dried yogurt treats. On the drive home, Pipi curled up sleepily in the passenger seat, tired but content and purring peacefully. It was as if he knew he was finally completely safe.Caryn was holding him, and she gently stroked his head, her heart aching for him."Look what they've put Pipi through. Poor Pipi. My heart just breaks for you."I g

When I arrived at the address, I frantically pounded on the buyer's door until it opened. From inside came Pipi's heart-wrenching cries.I rushed over. Inside the room, Rachel was holding Pipi down and forcing medicine into his mouth.“You little bast*rd, can't you do something useful? Once you breed her, that's two thousand bucks!”“Your dad gives you the best food and takes such good care of you. It's time you earned your keep!”I immediately shoved Rachel aside and bent down to scoop Pipi into my arms, my heart aching for him.The police arrived soon after and took Rachel into custody.“Hello. We received a report that you entered a private residence and stole property of significant value. You'll need to come with us to the station for questioning.”Rachel struggled wildly.“This isn't burglary! I'm the homeowner's girlfriend. Willow, hurry and explain it to them!”I watched coldly as she was taken away, nothing but disgust in my eyes.“Rachel, I'll hold you fully accoun
