Chapter 3

Author: Brandy Branch
I crouched down without taking Frank's gift. Instead, I reached over and stroked Pipi's head, soothing him.

Frank lowered his brows. Whatever patience he had left was completely gone, and anger surged across his face.

“Willow, can you stop being so unreasonable?

“I'm a grown man. How would I know how to pick out a gift for a woman? Rachel went out of her way to help me choose it. She even said your fair skin would look great with a gold necklace!

“She did me such a huge favor. I gave her a thank-you gift as a friend, and somehow that still bothers you?

“Can you stop being so controlling?!

“I can accept you taking this animal that can't even talk and treating it like your own child. So why are you being so aggressive about the friends I make?”

After venting his anger, Frank grabbed Rachel and turned to leave.

I slowly crouched down and sat there in a daze beside Pipi for the rest of the night.

He knew perfectly well that Pipi wasn't just a cat to me. He was family.

He was the only thing my grandmother left me before she passed away, the one thing that kept her memory alive for me. Pipi meant everything to me.

A little after two in the morning, I received a message from Rachel saying they were safe.

In the video, Frank was drunk, his face flushed as he slumped in a booth. Under the dim lights, Rachel held his chin in her hand.

“Don't worry, Willow. I'll teach Frank a good lesson for you. I'll definitely bring him back tomorrow to apologize to you. I guarantee he'll never lose his temper with you again.”

As she spoke, Rachel patted Frank's face. Her tone was intimate yet commanding, as if she were the lady of the house.

“Are you sorry? Are you going to make Willow angry again?”

Frank mumbled, “I'm sorry” and “I won't.”

With every question and answer, my heart grew colder until it was completely numb.

Frank didn't come home until nearly evening the next day.

He was carrying the takeout shrimp from my favorite place, and his neck was covered with a few red rashes from a mild alcohol allergy.

Because of his allergy, I had never let him drink.

Apparently, last night, someone had been there to drink and go wild with him.

“Honey, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said those things to you, and I shouldn't have said those things about Pipi.

“This is my peace offering for you and Pipi.”

Besides the shrimp, there was also a bag of the premium cat food Pipi usually ate.

My expression softened a little, and I was just about to speak when Rachel dragged a suitcase in behind him.

“Frank, did you tell Willow? At the bachelor farewell party last night, you drew from the blind box and lost to me!”

Rachel held up a pink, suggestive prank card.

Printed on it were the words: [Limited-Time Pre-Wedding Girlfriend Experience Card.]

“I've come to redeem this card!”

As she spoke, Rachel turned to look at me.

“Willow, this was just a joke we made between friends to have some fun and celebrate. You won't mind, right?

“Frank bragged yesterday that I'd be able to move in today, and that I could exercise ‘girlfriend privileges’ all the way until your wedding.

“Among our group of friends, this move-in is a way of bringing good vibes to the newlyweds’ home. It's our way of giving you our best wishes.

“No need to thank me, Willow!”

Rachel looked pleased with herself as she casually and confidently dragged her suitcase upstairs to the second floor.

I turned to Frank, my eyes frighteningly red.

“Willow, please don't misunderstand.

“It was just a blind-box game among friends. The box was supposed to be opened by one of the guys. Who knew Rachel would get so lucky?

“Besides, I've never thought of her as a woman. It's just a prank box. Nobody took it seriously.

“This is also a good chance for you to spend some time with Rachel and prove that we're really just friends. Nothing is going to happen.”

Frank hurriedly took my hand and explained. Before he could finish, Rachel's voice came from the stairs.

“Frank, what are you standing around downstairs for? Hurry up and come upstairs to make the bed for your limited-time girlfriend!”

Frank had lost a lot of weight. He was wearing the coat I'd bought for him, only now it hung much more loosely on him.His eyes were slightly sunken, no longer possessing the handsome, polished air of the refined young man he'd once been.Standing in front of me, he'd lost the former elegance and composure. All that remained was caution. The former heir of the Hortons had even lost the halo that used to surround him.I pretended not to see him and continued toward the stairwell."Willow, can we talk?"I stopped and turned to look at him."What do you want to talk about?"Frank was silent for a moment."I want to apologize to you.""Rachel has developed depression. Whenever she sees me, she goes crazy and hits me. Her mother stays home to take care of her every day now. If she's not careful, Rachel might do something drastic."My mom and I had a huge fight. She thinks you've completely bewitched me and that I refuse to admit my mistakes. I haven't gone home in a long time."

Xavier was typing, and a series of professional analyses followed one after another. Two minutes later, he sent another message."Typing is a hassle. There's a café downstairs from my law firm. Would you be available to meet there and talk, Ms. Newton?"I thought for a moment before replying, "Sure."Half an hour later, I met Xavier at the café.He was dressed in a suit, looking composed and refined, and gave me a slight nod."Hello, Ms. Newton."We shook hands, and I couldn't shake the feeling that I'd seen him somewhere before. After talking things over with Xavier, I handed Pipi's case over to him completely. The next time we met was at the police station, when Rachel asked to see me.Xavier accompanied me to meet her. The moment she saw me, she grabbed my hand and pleaded with me."Willow, I know I was wrong. I really am sorry!"I was completely out of my mind before. I thought it wouldn't be a big deal! I'm willing to return everything I earned to you, and I'll compens

"Frank, I'm warning you. I've already installed security cameras. If you show up at my house again, I'll call the police."I took a step back into the house, my face full of disgust."Today, I'll be notifying my family. I hope you also make sure your family understands that I don't want another situation like today, where your mother calls to lecture me about how I should 'know better.'"Otherwise, don't blame me if I say some unpleasant things."Frank's face went pale."My mom contacted you?"I'm sorry. I didn't know..."I let out a cold laugh."You didn't know? Don't you know what your mother is like? You went to her and exaggerated all the things I've supposedly done wrong. Did you really think she could sit back and do nothing?"Frank was speechless.Of course he knew. He'd simply wanted to use the pressure from Olivia to force me to back down."Willow, this is all my fault. I didn't handle any of this properly."But isn't this doing too much damage to Rachel? She's jus

"Thank goodness, Willow. You finally picked up!"Olivia Horton’s voice sounded exhausted. "Frank told me everything that happened yesterday."Frank and Rachel were in the wrong. That whole 'Limited-Time Pre-Wedding Girlfriend Experience Card' was absolutely ridiculous!"Willow, don't be angry. I'll bring Frank and Rachel over to apologize to you in person. I promise we won't let Rachel do anything inappropriate or cross any lines again."As for your cat, I heard about that, too. Nothing happened to him, did it?"A cat isn't a person. What Rachel did was certainly inappropriate, but you can't make a girl face criminal charges over that cat.‘That cat,’ I thought. That was the only impression Olivia had of Pipi.Never mind that nothing had happened. Even if something had happened, he was still just a cat. There was no way he could compare to Rachel."Olivia, my grandmother went with me to get this cat before she passed away. Pipi is what she left behind for me to remember her by

There was a brief silence on the other end of the line. Before he could say anything, I hung up.I contacted a veterinary hospital I was familiar with and took Pipi in for a checkup that night.Although Pipi wasn't as energetic as he used to be, thankfully, there was nothing wrong with his physical health."We recommend spending more time with your pets when you’re not working. They're lonely at home, too."To think there are actually people who would exploit someone else's pet to make a quick buck. She should be punished to the fullest extent."The veterinarian I knew kept reassuring me and even gave me a bag of Pipi's favorite freeze-dried yogurt treats. On the drive home, Pipi curled up sleepily in the passenger seat, tired but content and purring peacefully. It was as if he knew he was finally completely safe.Caryn was holding him, and she gently stroked his head, her heart aching for him."Look what they've put Pipi through. Poor Pipi. My heart just breaks for you."I g

When I arrived at the address, I frantically pounded on the buyer's door until it opened. From inside came Pipi's heart-wrenching cries.I rushed over. Inside the room, Rachel was holding Pipi down and forcing medicine into his mouth.“You little bast*rd, can't you do something useful? Once you breed her, that's two thousand bucks!”“Your dad gives you the best food and takes such good care of you. It's time you earned your keep!”I immediately shoved Rachel aside and bent down to scoop Pipi into my arms, my heart aching for him.The police arrived soon after and took Rachel into custody.“Hello. We received a report that you entered a private residence and stole property of significant value. You'll need to come with us to the station for questioning.”Rachel struggled wildly.“This isn't burglary! I'm the homeowner's girlfriend. Willow, hurry and explain it to them!”I watched coldly as she was taken away, nothing but disgust in my eyes.“Rachel, I'll hold you fully accoun
