Chapter 1

I had barely gotten into the car when my phone buzzed.

Someone had uploaded a video to the bridal party group chat.

The footage was shaky, but I could still make out Rowena Jennings reclining on the couch, looking completely unbothered as she lazily swirled the wine in her glass.

Someone asked, "Are you really not going after him?"

Before Rowena could answer, her cousin, Amelia Jennings, cut in.

"Why bother? He's already this temperamental before the wedding. Once they're married, he'll probably expect Rowena to wait on him hand and foot."

Amelia tugged Lucas Foster closer and deliberately raised her voice.

"Personally, I like guys like Lucas. He's mature, thoughtful, and actually knows how to treat a woman."

Rowena's friends immediately piled on.

"Why don't you just marry Lucas, Rowena?"

"You two have been inseparable since you were kids. You were so close growing up, and you practically shared a bed. You were even taking drags off his cigarette a minute ago."

Something flickered in Rowena's eyes. Hooking one finger around the rim of her glass, she slowly lifted it with an amused smile.

"You guys are getting carried away. Now you're planning my wedding night, too?"

Then, Anthony Jones, my best friend, finally spoke. "You guys were pretty rough on Hansel tonight."

My eyes burned. At least one person was willing to stand up for me.

But in the next second, my body stiffened.

"Maybe it's better this way. I'm sick of being stuck in the middle anyway. He has no idea that the last time you two weren't speaking, I deliberately twisted what each of you said.

"Otherwise, how would you and Lucas get this close? I'd say I did a pretty decent job playing Cupid."

Heat rushed straight to my head before a chill ran down my spine.

All those late-night calls came flooding back. Whenever Rowena said something that hurt me, I'd call Anthony and tell him about it.

He always reassured me, telling me not to read too much into things.

He'd sounded so patient when he comforted me. All the while, he'd been turning around and using everything I told him as material for a joke.

As it turned out, all those times he'd volunteered to smooth things over between Rowena and me were because he was tired of listening to me.

I thought we had a solid friendship. Apparently, I was the only one who felt that way.

The video ended there.

I couldn't remember how I got home.

Once I was lying in bed, I tapped on the group chat again. No one had said a word.

The video remained at the top of the screen, sitting there like a live grenade.

I knew they were waiting for my reaction, wondering whether I'd go back feeling heartbroken, tell everyone it was fine, and insist I'd simply misunderstood.

Then, they could all relax and carry on as if nothing had happened.

Ten minutes later, another notification appeared. Someone had posted the video again. But this time, they made sure to tag me.

They'd grown tired of waiting, so they were practically shoving the video in my face to force a response.

I sent Anthony a private message. A part of me still wanted to believe he hadn't meant what he'd said.

"They made you say that, didn't they?"

Instead of replying, he called.

The first thing I heard was a burst of laughter from the other end. Anthony didn't speak until it died down.

"No one made me say anything. I'm just tired of pretending. Do you really think I enjoy listening to you unload on me every time something goes wrong? Hansel, do you ever think about anything besides your own feelings?"

I could barely process what I was hearing.

"Is that why you decided to stab me in the back?" I asked.

Anthony didn't sound even remotely guilty.

"Yeah. In fact, I've wanted to do it for a while. You'd call me in the middle of the night crying because Rowena stood you up again. Meanwhile, Lucas spent his entire day volunteering with kids with cerebral palsy, feeding them, cleaning them up, and helping with their physiotherapy.

"You two aren't even in the same league. If I had a choice, I'd rather have Lucas as my friend."

I stood there in stunned silence.

Then, Amelia's angry voice came through the phone.

"When Aunt Elena was in the hospital last month, Rowena couldn't get away from work, so Lucas stayed with her for seven days straight. Where were you when Rowena needed you?"

For a moment, I couldn't answer.

When Elena Burke was hospitalized, I'd planned to stay with her and help take care of her. But Rowena had been the one who suddenly sent me on a business trip.

The call ended abruptly.

Almost immediately, the bridal boutique called.

"Mr. Bowen, don't forget to bring your fiancee along for tomorrow's fitting. We've finished all the alterations exactly the way you requested."

My throat tightened as I spoke. "Go ahead and sell the suit to someone else."

After all, I wasn't getting married anymore.

A week later, I was revising a design proposal when my assistant knocked on the door.He sounded hesitant as he said, "Hansel, there's a woman here who insists on seeing you. She doesn't have an appointment.""Tell her I'm not in."Before he could leave, the door flew open, and Elena rushed inside."Hansel, please. I'm begging you. Will you go see Rowena?"I paused. "What's wrong with her?""She… hasn't eaten or drunk anything in three days. She's stopped going to work, canceled the wedding, and locked herself inside the apartment you two used to share. She won't open the door for anyone.""That's her problem," I said."You're the only person she wants to see!" Elena retorted. "I'm begging you. Just visit her. Say whatever you want. Marry her or don't—I don't care. Just do something to pull her out of this—"Her voice broke, and she began to cry. "She's my only daughter. I can't stand by and watch her die."I set down my pen and looked at her."Mrs. Jennings, didn't you say

When I opened my eyes again, hers was the first face I saw.She sat in the chair beside my hospital bed, the collar of her silk blouse slightly askew and her long hair loosely pinned up, with a few strands falling against her neck. She was hunched forward with both elbows braced on her knees, looking utterly drained.I pulled my hand out of hers. The movement immediately caught her attention, and she looked up at me."Hansel, I changed the flowers and the desserts. Everything's the way you wanted now. Once you're better, we can have the wedding again."I turned my head and looked at her. "How long was I out?""Three days."She choked up. "I deleted the group chat and blocked all of them. I'll never see Lucas again. And about your mom… I'm sorry. I got there too late. Can you forgive me?""I want to see my mom," I told her.Rowena's eyes grew even redder. "I'll take you.""No," I said. "I want to go myself."I pushed back the covers, only for a sharp pain to shoot through m

"Have you lost your mind? You don't even know where he is—"Rowena hung up before Elena could finish. The bridal party group chat was already flooded with messages trying to change her mind.Amelia was the first to speak up. "Rowena, Lucas already agreed to stand in for Hansel. What more could you possibly want?"One of her friends immediately chimed in, "Exactly. If a guy like Hansel wants to leave, let him. Good riddance."Rowena stared at the screen. She could barely stand to read what they were saying. Her thumb began scrolling upward almost on its own until she reached the screenshots Anthony had posted of his old conversations with me."Anthony, Rowena didn't reply to me again today. Did I do something wrong?""She's been so busy lately. I'm scared I'll bother her, but I really miss her.""We went for my suit fitting today. She told me Lucas had already tried it on, so there was no point in me doing it. Am I being too sensitive? I know I probably am, but it really hurt."

My phone was turned off. The call went straight to voicemail. When Rowena finally spoke, her voice was so hoarse that she barely sounded like herself."Hansel, I had the wedding set up the way you wanted. Please stop being mad and come back, okay?"She stared at the screen, waiting for my familiar profile picture to appear, but it never did.She sent another message. "I changed all of it. Don't you at least want to see?"A red exclamation mark appeared beside it.Everyone turned to look at Rowena."Rowena, have you lost your mind? Do you really love Hansel that much?""Lucas has waited for you all these years. Are you seriously going to choose—"Even Elena looked stunned. She had never seen her daughter so rattled before."Is Hansel really that important to you?" she asked.Rowena said nothing.Instead, she stared at Lucas, her gaze so intense that he instinctively took a step back."Did Hansel really head to the hospital last night?" she demanded.Lucas shrank under her

Lucas quickly caught Rowena by the arm."Rowena, I'm sorry. I felt bad for Hansel last night, so I let him out to see his mom. I just didn't expect him to disappear and not come back."Elena let out a cold laugh. "See? This is the husband you picked. He walks out without a word on his wedding day and leaves everyone hanging. What's he trying to prove?"Amelia bent down, picked up the wedding suit, and held it against Lucas. Then, she turned to Rowena with a grin."As far as I'm concerned, there's only one man who should be my cousin-in-law, and he's standing right in front of you."The others immediately joined in."Come on, Rowena. Everything's already set up. Just switch grooms and go through with the wedding."Another friend patted her on the shoulder. "You and Lucas grew up together. You know each other inside and out. If this isn't fate pointing you in the right direction, I don't know what is. Stop fighting it."Anthony, already dressed in his groomsman's suit, nodded a

I left with my suitcase, checked into a hotel, and started applying for jobs.Unlike Rowena and the rest of her wealthy friends, I needed a paycheck to support myself.A week later, Rowena was discharged from the hospital. I blocked her number and decided that whatever I had once owed her, I'd repaid it.Then, late one night, I came across an article trending online.Someone had left poisoned bait near an office building, killing several cats. One of the photos showed an orange cat being placed inside a black plastic bag.I hadn't even finished reading the article when someone started pounding on my hotel room door. When I opened it, Rowena was standing in the hallway, her eyes bloodshot with rage. She shoved her phone in front of my face. The same article was on the screen. "You did this, didn't you?"I instinctively defended myself. "No, I didn't."Then, her gaze dropped to the phone in my hand.I still had the article open, and I'd accidentally enlarged the photo of the d
