Chapter 4

Author: Cece Jones
"I just wanted you to calm down," I said. "George is my friend. I won't let you hurt him."

I helped George to his feet.

Bertrand grabbed my arm, jealousy blazing in his eyes. "You went to Acreatic with this guy for days! Have you forgotten you're my wife?!"

He was about to explode with accusations, but I met his gaze and said calmly, "Did you forget? Because of your secretary's sprained ankle, we never actually registered our marriage."

His face turned deathly pale in an instant.

"It wasn't because of her ankle, Annie. The company had an emergency…"

"Oh?" I cut him off. "What kind of emergency is more important than getting married? Go on, tell me."

George chuckled from the sidelines, adding fuel to the fire.

I waited in silence for Bertrand to answer, but he fumbled and stammered, unable to say a word.

I wasn't surprised.

"Bertrand, let's end this."

I didn't plan on telling him about the baby. I was afraid he'd lose control and try to take my baby's ashes away from me.

"No! Annie, I won't agree to this! This is because of him, isn't it? You want to break up because of that guy?"

He couldn't comprehend it. In his mind, all he'd done was delay the wedding. How had it come to this?

George, now pulled into the drama, let out a bitter laugh.

"If it weren't for you, she wouldn't have lost the—"

I quickly grabbed George's arm and cut him off. "Forget it. Let's just go."

Bertrand burned with jealousy as he stared at my hand resting on George's arm. "Annie, let go of him. Don't try to provoke me. You know how I get when I'm jealous. I don't know what I'll do."

I met his gaze without flinching. "I'm only doing what you taught me. There's nothing going on between me and George. So why are you so furious?"

Those were the very same words Bertrand had once used to scold me.

He staggered back a few steps, his face awash with regret.

"That's not what I meant, Annie…"

He tried to explain, but I no longer cared to listen.

After leaving the airport, I found a peaceful cemetery and laid my baby to rest.

For the child who never got the chance to be born, I chose the name Noan.

Once everything was arranged, I returned to the hotel, utterly drained—body and soul—from days of travel and emotional upheaval.

But just as I lay down, Bertrand's urgent shouting and pounding echoed from outside the door.

Reluctantly, I opened it.

He burst in, frantically searching the room before turning on me with rage. "Where is he?!"

"Who?"

The absurdity of his question made me laugh, bitterly.

"Bertrand, I'm not as dirty-minded as you think."

He clenched his jaw. "You moved out of our home because of him! You even threw away our keepsakes! Annie, do all these years mean nothing to you?!"

I looked into his bloodshot eyes and spoke softly, "You're right, Bertrand. I regret it all."

I had been so desperate to marry him, I hadn't even realized I was pregnant. Just a few months ago, I'd humbled myself and taken a menial job at his law firm.

But instead of acknowledging me, Bertrand had kept our relationship a secret and allowed Marina, his secretary, to order me around as she pleased.

"Annie," Marina had once said, "if you can't beat me, then what good are you?"

In my naivety, I accepted the challenge.

But every bit of credit for my work was stolen by Marina.

When I found out, I confronted him, and we had a vicious argument.

Face flushed with anger, he shouted, "Stop being unreasonable, Annie! Marina's skills are well-known in the industry. You've just entered the field. How could you possibly have written such an impressive report?"

He had forgotten that my father had been a brilliant lawyer too.

As I looked at Marina's overly painted lips and the smudge of lipstick on his collar, I lost all will to fight.

After that, I quit his firm and stopped keeping tabs on him altogether.

Maybe sensing my withdrawal, Bertrand suddenly tried to make amends. And for a brief moment, I thought maybe we had a chance.

But time and again, he chose Marina over me.

What he didn't realize was, the day we were supposed to get married was the last chance I was ever going to give him.

"Did you hear about that lawyer, Bertrand Callum? He killed someone. They say it was his secretary.""Oh my god, that's terrifying..."The bridal shop employees, who had taken a liking to me, whispered among themselves.I never imagined Bertrand would go down such a dark path."Good thing he was foolish enough to let you go. Otherwise, I'd never have met someone as amazing as you, Annie."George grinned smugly and, true to form, posted a photo collage on social media to show me off. That night, George's phone buzzed nonstop.Curious, I glanced at the screen, and to my surprise, the sender was Bertrand.I scrolled up.To my shock, George had sent Bertrand dozens of photos of me, each captioned with something more outrageous than the last.[My darling Annie went shopping with me today. She's head over heels for me.][She gave me a handmade gift for my birthday.][Annie packed me a heart-shaped lunch...]Reading his childish captions, I couldn't help but let out a laugh.Geo

"Annie… please… give me another chance," Bertrand pleaded, his face soaked with tears.I looked at him and shook my head. "Bertrand, there's no going back for us. I will never forgive you. From now on, don't come to Noan's grave again. Having a father like you is a disgrace to him."Bertrand staggered a few steps and collapsed to the ground.I turned away and gently placed a bouquet in front of Noan's headstone.Everyone who once hurt us had already received their punishment. Even the reckless driver who caused it all had long paid the price he deserved.Noan was probably happy now. After that, George and I left.Bertrand couldn't help chasing after us."Annie, I won't visit Noan again, I promise. But can I at least—"Before he could finish, George cut in sharply, "No. Bertrand, you already owe her three lives."Bertrand's face turned pale as he looked at me, more defeated than I had ever seen him.I tugged on George's hand and said softly, "Let's go."Behind us, the wind c

I looked into George's puppy-dog eyes, full of pleading, and slowly shook my head."No, George. Let the world believe Annie is dead."My father had passed away three years ago from an illness. That was part of why I kept compromising with Bertrand for so long. But the moment he abandoned me, I'd already stopped thinking about going back."Alright!"And just like that, I returned home with him.George treated me with genuine care. He never hid our relationship the way Bertrand once did.Everyone knew he was pursuing me. His friends respected me deeply, and under his encouragement, I learned many new things.Time passed quickly.A year later, Bertrand suddenly sent me a photo.[Look, I brought new flowers for Noan.]Memories I had tried so hard to bury surged back like a tide. As I stared at the headstone in the photo, my eyes grew wet despite myself."George," I said softly, "can I go back to see Noan?""Of course," he replied. "You're Noan's mother. You have every right to

"Annie, I..."Bertrand never imagined he'd face such an impossible choice. He knew he'd betrayed me. And now, asking me to give up my life was shameless beyond belief. But Marina had once saved his life. And now, she was carrying his child. He couldn't just leave Marina to die.I cut him off before he could say more. "Bertrand, what if I told you... I'm carrying your child too?"Before he could respond, Marina shrieked in disbelief."Annie, how low will you stoop to save yourself? You two haven't been together in ages!"Bertrand's face darkened as he turned to me, disappointment clouding his eyes."Annie... when did you become so afraid of death? To stoop to this? Making up a lie like that just to survive?"His words froze the blood in my veins. He had betrayed me. And he'd forgotten everything about that wild, reckless night we shared.Who did he think I was then?I stared at Bertrand on the screen, my heart crumbling as he said coldly, "Pate, I choose Marina. Let her go n

"I think you need to calm down, Annie. Let's talk again once you've had time to cool off."Bertrand stared at me, stunned. Despair and sorrow flickered in his eyes. Then, without another word, he turned and fled.I collapsed onto the bed, empty and numb. I didn't notice that the door hadn't fully closed behind him. That night, two men broke in and kidnapped me."You'd better behave," one of them growled.A cold blade pressed against my skin, sending a violent shiver down my spine."I won't scream," I whispered, trembling. "You don't have to—"A sharp pain shot through my neck. Darkness consumed me before I could finish my sentence. When I woke up, my limbs were tightly bound. I was in an empty and unfamiliar warehouse. There was only one other person—Marina. She opened her eyes and immediately panicked as she took in the scene. "Wh-what's going on? Where am I?"It was clear she had no idea why she'd been kidnapped. But I did.Bertrand's rise to power had earned him more than
