𝐁𝐞𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐭

"Sorry I'm late."

Nobody even looks up. They're all skating around, yelling at each other like a bunch of kids who never grew up.

I wasn't supposed to be late. I meant to be early, professional, first day and all that, but I went home first because my head was a mess and I needed a minute. That minute turned into me sitting on my couch going through the players list, name after name, position after position, until none of it stuck because my brain kept sliding somewhere else.

To his hands…His annoyingly perfect abs that I can't seem to get off my mind and to last night, God I feel like a sex freak—with all those images running wildly through my head.

I have zero business thinking about that right now.

The captain's picture is missing from the file. I noticed it before I left, and didn't think much of it. Every other guy has a photo stapled to his page, some blurry team shot, but the captain's page is just stats, no face, nothing.

Maybe he forgot to pose for the picture.

My coffee was still untouched and it sat pretty on my counter with my half eaten sandwich. I stood in the shower way too long like the water could actually wash last night off me.

It couldn't.

Then traffic, every single light red, my hands tight on the wheel the whole drive over telling myself this is fine, this is normal, nothing weird is happening. I should be excited that I wasn't part timing anymore, and have landed a real job at the most prestigious university in the country.

"Everyone line up!"

I snapped back as the team scrambles into something that's supposed to be a line. My skates hit the ice, my legs remembering what to do even after all these years, and I stand there with the speech I've rehearsed a hundred times ready to go.

I open my mouth to speak.

But someone breaks off from the group. Skates straight toward me with a smirk already on his face like he owns the whole rink, and my stomach drops out from under me before I even register why.

No.

It can't be.

"Coach." One word. That's all it takes for me to wish the floor would open up and swallow me immediately. I skate closer, right up to the boards, close enough that whatever he says next stays between us.

My whole body goes hot then cold then hot again. He leans in. "We meet again."

I was screwed.

Not the normal kind either, the actual, literal, I-slept-with-a-student kind, except worse, because he's not just some student. He's the captain—the captain of the exact team I was just hired to take to a championship. The same captain whose face was missing from my file like the universe already knew this was coming.

Was it Micah? Or Michael?

Of course it had to be the one dude that I couldn't remember his name, out of every bar in this city, every stranger I could've gone home with.

My mouth stays shut.

What am I supposed to say, thanks for last night, please forget you saw me naked eleven hours ago, in front of a team I've known for four minutes? I turn away from him like he's just another player, my heart slamming against my ribs, and face the rest of the team instead.

"My name's Beckett. I'll be your coach this season." Hopefully he will get the message that I'm ignoring him and leave me alone.

"I've seen your record. I don't care about it." A few of them shift on their skates. "What I care about is whether you're willing to work, because talent without work gets you nowhere, and I'm not here to make friends. I'm here to win."

Nobody says anything.

I keep going anyway. "Some of you are gonna hate me by the end of this season. That's fine. Hate me all the way to the championship, I don't care how we get there."

A couple of them almost smile at that.

"It's already getting late, so that's it for today. Be here tomorrow, on time, no excuses." I hear myself say it and almost laugh, since I'm the one who just broke that rule five minutes into the job.

A few of them actually laugh. I'll take it.

"You're dismissed."

They break apart, skating off toward the locker room in twos and threes, sticks clacking, voices overlapping, until it's just me and the lights humming overhead.

And him.

Michael or Micah haven't moved.

Everyone else has cleared out and he's still standing exactly where he was, like leaving never crossed his mind, like the rest of the team walking off around him is just noise he doesn't need to bother with.

I turn to actually look at him for the first time since he skated in front of everyone.

Under the rink lights he looks different than he did last night, not less good-looking unfortunately, that would have made this a lot easier but he was more devilish handsome than he was last night. Like there's a whole other version of him standing there now, one that knows exactly what he's doing to me and isn't sorry about it.

Not even a little.

I cross my arms, tell myself it's a professional stance. It isn't. We both know it isn't, neither of us says so.

"Can I help you with something?" I already know the answer's gonna be a problem before I even finish asking.

Michael or Micah lips slowly pulled in a smile, like he's been waiting the whole time for me to ask, like he knew I would before I even opened my mouth. He tilts his head, just slightly, that same smirk stuck to his face and not going anywhere.

I should tell him to go home.

I have every reason to.

Instead I just stand there and wait, because as much as I hate admitting it, I want to hear what he says next.

He leaned in close enough to whisper into my ear. "I need help with a lot of things.”

𝐀𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫Reyes called me into his office earlier that morning, way before any of this hallway business started.I'd already pitched him the idea a few days back, sat across his desk and laid out exactly how this team could actually win their next big game if someone who knew what they were doing got involved. Game plays I remembered from my own playing days, half of it recycled from a coach I had a decade ago, but Reyes didn't need to know that. Men in his position never ask where good ideas come from, only whether they'll work. He ate it up and offered me a spot on his staff right then, like I'd handed him the answer to a problem he'd been stuck on for weeks. Men who run teams like this are always looking for a shortcut, and I know exactly how to sound like one.I couldn't care less about actual hockey. Whether this team wins or loses next month has nothing to do with me. I just needed a reason to be here, something that would put me in the same building as Beckett every s

𝐁𝐞𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐭My mind was racing. Why was Alister with the AD? Did he tell Reyes about us? Did he tell him I was seeing a student? If Reyes knew, my job was gone. Just like that. No warning, no chance to explain myself, just gone. I thought about the season, and how fast a job could disappear over one bad rumor, true or not, no matter how hard I'd worked to get here.My hands started shaking, I put them in my pockets so no one would see.The hallway felt smaller than it had a minute ago. Just me, Malakai, Reyes, and Alister, standing under the fluorescent lights like this was a normal Tuesday morning. It didn't feel normal. Nothing about it felt normal.Malakai stepped forward first, he looked calm. Too calm, maybe, like he had no idea what kind of morning this could turn into, like walking up to the AD right now was the most natural thing in the world."Morning, Director Reyes."Reyes turned to him and smiled. "Malakai. Good to see you out here, what's got you off the ice this earl

𝐁𝐞𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐭A hand waved right in front of my face, close enough that I flinched back on instinct before I even registered whose it was."Whoa. Hey." Malakai pulled his hand back, brows pulled together. "You good?"I blinked, the rink coming back into focus around me, the sound of sticks and skates I hadn't fully been hearing a second ago suddenly loud again. I'd been so deep in my own head that I hadn't even noticed him skate over, hadn't noticed anything really.I've been too busy running numbers I hadn't asked for and planning my resignation letter, half convinced I could plan my way out of the mess Alister had dropped on me the night before if I just thought about it hard enough. The next match had been announced, posted up on the board outside the office like a countdown, and somewhere in my head I'd already decided that once it was over, I was done.Handing in my resignation. Ending all of it, cleanly, before it had the chance to end on its own in some way I couldn't contr

𝐁𝐞𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐭"Used to." Alister repeated it slowly, his eyes meeting mine. "Not anymore?"I smiled at him. "You shouldn't do this, Alister.""Do what?""This." I gestured vaguely between us, at the lunchbox still sitting open on my desk, at the whole ridiculous scene he'd set up like we were still two people who got to have easy dinners together after work. "Whatever this is supposed to be. Even if you don't respect me enough to stay away, you could at least respect the woman you're marrying. She deserves better than whatever this is."Something flashed across his face at that, quick, there and gone, gone fast enough that I almost convinced myself I'd imagined it. "It's a business marriage, Beckett. You know that. There's no love in it.""That doesn't make it not real.""It makes it exactly as real as it needs to be." He leaned back in the chair, unbothered. It was as if we were discussing the weather instead of the woman he was about to stand at an altar with soon. "The only pers

𝑴𝒂𝒍𝒂𝒌𝒂𝒊I pushed her off me.Not gentle about it either, hands landing on her shoulders and shoving back hard enough that she stumbled a step before catching herself against the side of my car.For a second neither of us moved. She stood there with her hand pressed flat against the passenger door, chest rising and falling too fast, staring at me like she genuinely hadn't expected that reaction, like kissing someone who'd just spent five minutes telling her to go home was supposed to land any other way.The parking lot was almost empty by now, just the two of us and a handful of cars under the security lights and the whole building behind us gone quiet for the night. My whole body still felt wrong, like something had gotten under my skin and I couldn't shake it loose fast enough."What the hell are you doing?""Malakai—""No, seriously." I wiped the back of my hand across my mouth like that would undo it, like I could just scrub the last ten seconds off my skin and pretend the

𝑴𝒂𝒍𝒂𝒌𝒂𝒊I was so pissed by the time I got to my car.Not about the stats. I could care less about running numbers tonight, and Beckett knew that too, which was exactly why I'd used it as an excuse to stay in the first place. What I was pissed about was the man showing up out of nowhere with his stupid lunchbox and his stupid smile, standing there in Beckett's office like he owned it and saying stuff like can't strategize on an empty stomach and a whole body that needs food to function.Funny how that works, like he was scoring points off me while Beckett just sat there and let him ruin our conversation. And Beckett didn't even chase him out.Instead he just told me to go home, like that fucker showing up unannounced wasn't the actual issue here.I could still see the way his eyes never left mine the whole time we were going back and forth, sizing me up the same way I was sizing him up. Both of us knew exactly what we were really fighting about even though neither of us said i
