Chapter 1

Autor: Washing Wheat
One blazing midsummer day, 49 of my colleagues and I are suddenly added to an unfamiliar gaming group chat. A notification window popped up with a message.

"Attention, players. This is a survival game set in an apocalyptic world. Players who succeed in surviving for a week will get a share of the 100 million dollar prize pool."

The system then dropped a ten-million-dollar gift that anyone could claim, as if it were afraid that we wouldn't believe it.

My colleagues, who at first believed that we had somehow gotten ourselves involved in a scam, immediately changed their tune when they got their hands on the money.

"Oh, my God! So, all I have to do is survive for a week to earn so much money? Who even cares about working anymore?"

"Hurry and tell us more! Stop dawdling!"

The assistant manager, Frank Gideon, calmly chimes in, "What happens if we don't survive? Or if someone quits halfway through the game?"

"The game will be reset if all players perish. If there is a winner, the game will end. The players who quit halfway will have to return all the money that they claimed from the gift earlier."

The group chat fell silent for two minutes before those who failed to claim the money earlier cried out that they had lost out. Meanwhile, some insisted that they wanted to leave the group chat.

However, all 50 players remained in the group. The temptation of the 100 million dollar prize pool was too strong, so they ended up staying even if they weren't sure if the system was being truthful or lying to them.

Since nobody left, the system listed out the first set of choices for us to select.

"Please choose your safehouse:

"1. An apartment built of plastic in the biggest desert in the world with no water or electricity

"2. A military armory

"3. A luxury RV with a full tank

"4. An air raid shelter in the city with airtight doors

"5. A campsite with ample supplies on Seafoam Island."

"You should pick the campsite, Ms. Johnson! You're usually so good at keeping track of things. Our minds would be at ease with you taking stock of our resources!"

"He's right, Ms. Johnson! We can even form a team later!"

In the end, I was the only one who chose the plastic apartment in the desert.

The manager, Riley Johnson, sent a string of exclamation marks before asking, "Have you lost your mind, Molly Hampton? The game is named 'War of the Plants'. You're going to burn to a crisp within three days if you stay in a plastic apartment in the middle of the desert with no water or electricity."

"Did Molly just pick the first option she saw because she wanted to be cool and different?"

"She's just a junior manager too. Her choice makes no sense at all. What a fool."

Riley was a social butterfly and was the darling of the company. The moment the words left her lips, several male colleagues began mocking me as well. Those who were considering picking the plastic apartment in the desert also immediately changed their selection.

We were locked into our selections once the five-minute timer was up.

The system then sent us a reminder. "All players have temporary administrative rights. The players who selected the same safehouses are free to form teams with each other. Team members will be sent to the same location."

Riley tagged everyone in the group chat and said, "Did anyone choose the campsite on Seafoam Island? Let's form a team and have a party there!"

Dozens of male colleagues immediately sent Riley requests to team up with her.

Feeling incredibly smug, she tagged me and said, "Oh, I didn't expect so many people to want to team up with me. Why don't some of you join Molly? It's so sad that nobody picked her."

Riley wasn't wrong. Despite there being 50 players, I was the only one who was alone.

Frank finally spoke up to smooth the situation over after the rest of the players relentlessly mocked me. "Let's not fight among ourselves. When does the next step begin, System?"

Both Riley and I were reborn after we perished in our previous lives. The game was called "Magnet Apocalypse" from the very beginning in our last lives.Frank had immediately claimed the reverse photosynthesis skill for himself. To increase everyone's survival chances, I had chosen the safehouse that had ample food and water, and also the skill that provided me with unlimited storage space. I had also teamed up with many people, sharing my resources with them. However, when we entered the second stage, Frank began convincing me to team up with him instead. As a result, I let my guard down around him and told him where my resources were located.Frank then sent screenshots of our conversation to the group chat and accused me of hoarding the resources for myself, urging my teammates to attack me. At the same time, he painted himself as a saint and offered to keep watch over the resources. In the end, Frank and my teammates locked me in the warehouse to die. Before Frank left, he s

Frank raised his voice and shouted, "I did no such thing! Stop lying!""Just because you haven't done it now doesn't guarantee that you won't do it in the future," Riley retorted coldly. "You're a natural-born traitor, after all."I opened the door just as Frank and Riley reached the peak of their argument.Frank immediately schooled his furious expression into a calm one when he spotted me. He hurried over to me, reaching out to pull me into his arms."I knew that you still had me in your heart, Molly! Let's team up now. Riley's going to show up any second now!"I dodged away from his hands and calmly said, "You only have a teleportation skill. It's useless during this magnet apocalypse."Mistakenly assuming that I was worried about his safety, Frank rushed to explain himself. "It's fine since we'll share skills once we team up. I'll be able to use your reverse photosynthesis skill as well. We'll be able to survive till the very end of the game!"The words had barely left his l

Just then, Riley suddenly came online. She tagged everyone and said, "I was too stubborn in the past. I didn't properly analyze the situation and led everyone astray."She then sent a photo to the group chat. The photo showed Seafoam Island. Most of the metal equipment was stuck together thanks to the magnets, leaving the island bare.Riley was standing all by herself with a few bags of resources sitting at her feet."All my teammates are dead," she said forlornly. "I hope someone can find it in their heart to team up with me. All of us used to be colleagues, after all. I've retrieved all the resources from my storage space. I just want to survive this disaster."She sent her location into the chat. She sounded like she was on the verge of tears when she continued, "This is my location. I don't want anything else. I just want someone to help me survive."A long time passed before someone finally replied, "Where are your supporters, Riley? Didn't you say that you were going to hav

The magnet storm intensified on the fourth day.Every piece of metal in the city was stuck together. The roads were covered in warped metal blocks. Broken steel bars protruded from the walls of many buildings.Barely anyone spoke in the group chat anymore. Most of the messages were notifications from the system."Connor Edwards has been eliminated."Sonya Larkman has been eliminated."William Green has been eliminated."There were only 25 survivors left in the game. Half of the players had perished. Some of them died being crushed under the magnets, while some were killed by their teammates to steal their skills.Just then, I received a friend request from Frank. He bombarded me with a barrage of messages the moment I accepted the request."I knew that you still had me in your heart, Molly. Riley was the one who tried to drive a wedge into our relationship in the past. She said that your selfishness led everyone to ostracize you. I swear on my life that I will protect you!"W

The group chat fell silent for a few seconds before it was flooded by question marks and angry messages."'Magnet Apocalypse'? Isn't the game supposed to be 'War of the Plants'?""Is the system pulling our leg?""What the hell is going on? Why are only magnets falling from the sky? What about the plants? This is supposed to be a plant apocalypse!""This is all your fault for leading astray, Riley!"I sent a photo into the group chat amidst the building chaos. The photo showed countless magnets falling outside beyond the balcony. Meanwhile, there was a lit candle in the apartment. The air was dry and warm. There was a tablet and a laptop on the coffee table, along with a novel that was flipped open. The messages in the group chat halted for a few seconds before everyone started blowing it up again."How are you living so comfortably, Molly?""Were you the one who changed the name of the game? The system did say that everyone had administrative rights before it was revoked.""Y

Riley's message immediately enraged everyone in the group chat."Now isn't the time to worry about the inventory anymore!""Are you planning to use the resources as leverage against us by hoarding them for yourself?""Say something, Mr. Gideon!"The argument in the group continued to escalate.Just then, Frank suddenly tagged me. "Your safehouse is in the desert, Molly. There aren't a lot of metal objects there, so the damage should be less severe. Send your location to me. I'll teleport everyone there to weather this crisis."Riley's temper exploded. "Why do you keep seeking her out, Mr. Gideon? Do you like her or something? I disagree! Anyone who dares look for Molly can kiss my resources goodbye forever!"Frank's words were laced with helplessness when he replied, "Stop causing a fuss, Riley. Our lives are on the line here.""Causing a fuss? Don't you need my unlimited storage space? Swear to me that you'll never contact Molly again. I'll let you enter my storage space to su
