Chapter 9

Penulis: Loe Yann
"Rhea can't be dead! That's impossible—I was just home a few days ago, and she was sleeping in the bedroom," Bill said, his voice rising in panic. "And Luca—I even took him out to eat at a hotel! How could they be dead?"

He lunged at the officer, trying to stop him from pulling back the white sheet.

"Mommy, aren't we right here? Why does Daddy act like he can't see us?" Luca asked, his little hand clutching mine tightly. He seemed confused by Bill's grief.

"Sweetheart, we're not part of this world anymore." I stroked his soft hair. "That's why Daddy can't see us."

The police led Bill away to an office for questioning, while the medical examiner focused on us. His face was grim as he worked, carefully preparing our bodies.

Bill's protests echoed down the hallway, alternating between sobs and claims of how hard he worked to provide for us, how much he loved Luca.

"Spare me the act!" the medical examiner finally snapped. "Your wife died on June 22. You went home on June 23 and didn't even

The news of our deaths blew up in the community. When word got out about Bill's role in everything, his company's stock tanked hard. Bankruptcy followed soon after. But Bill didn't care. He trailed my dad back to our hometown, showing up outside his house every day, begging to know where we were buried. My dad, already at the end of his rope, finally chased him off with a mop. With nowhere left to go, Bill slunk back to our apartment. The place still reeked of decay, but he acted like he couldn't smell it. He collapsed onto our bed, clutching his phone. Scrolling through old photos and videos, he let the tears flow."Rhea, it's all my fault," he mumbled. "I couldn't save you. But how could you be so heartless and leave me behind?"The pillowcase was soaked with his sobbing, but all I felt was a cold, bitter satisfaction.'You cheated. You abandoned us. You let Luca suffer. And now you're acting like the victim?' I stood silently by the door, Luca's little hand in mine.I'd made my peac

The next day was mine and Luca's funeral.Family and friends filled the funeral home, their faces heavy with grief.Luca and I shared a small, cramped coffin."Mommy! Look how many people came! Why won't anyone talk to me?" Luca chirped, zipping around the room and zooming through people like a little ghostly ninja.Meanwhile, I hung back, watching Bill like a hawk. There he was, Mr. Picture-of-Grief, in a black suit with a white flower pinned to his chest. People kept coming up to him with those classic funeral lines:"Stay strong, Bill.""My condolences, man."Bill just stood there, locked on my black-and-white photo. Then he muttered, voice all wobbly, "Why? Why did you have to hold a grudge against me? If you'd just swallowed your pride and coaxed me a little, I wouldn't have ignored you."His eyes shimmered, tears right on the edge.Wait. WHAT?'You're blaming me? Was it my fault you shacked up with Ima? Was it my fault you bailed on your own kid?'I shot toward him, ready to slap

Luca pressed his tiny hands to his face, then gently placed one of mine against his cheek."Mommy, it hurts. Can you blow on it for me?"He held onto me tightly, completely unaware of the foul odor filling the room....At their shiny new home, Bill and Ima sat talking about Luca."He's just being stubborn," Ima said sweetly, guiding Bill's hand to her stomach. "Once he becomes a brother, he'll behave better. Bill, I'm pregnant."Her face lit up with a smile.Bill's eyes widened, his excitement bubbling over as he cupped her face and kissed her. "Have you been to the doctor? Do we know if it's a boy or a girl?"Ima shook her head. "It's only been a little over a month. It's too early to tell.""Alright, alright." Bill stood up and started pacing, his grin stretching ear to ear. From that moment on, he dumped all his work onto his staff and dedicated himself to doting on Ima....In the apartment, Luca's stomach growled painfully, the emptiness gnawing at him. Days alone had worn him do

"Bill, I'm starving. Let's go already," Ima whined, giving his arm a shove. The bedroom door, left slightly ajar, creaked shut with a soft click."Fine. Let's go. It's not like it's cold in the car anyway," Bill muttered.I screamed. Begged. Tried to shove him toward the bedroom.Just look! Please, just look! But my hands went straight through him like smoke.***They ended up in some fancy hotel restaurant, the kind with spotless white tablecloths and expensive cutlery. Ima wasted no time, ordering enough food to feed a small army."Luca, sweetie, let me peel some shrimp for you," she said, putting on her best look-how-maternal-I-am act.Luca, starving, didn't care about the show. He stuffed his face like he hadn't eaten in days—because he hadn't.Once he was full, Ima handed him her phone with cartoons queued up. Then she took a sip of wine before leaning in toward Bill, her eyes doing all the talking.Bill instinctively wanted to pull away. But then Ima gave him a sly sm

I darted to the kitchen. The eggs were toast—literally. Charcoal-black and smoking like a tire fire. The apartment was choking on smoke, getting thicker by the second. I hovered there, useless and furious at myself.I couldn't fix this. I couldn't save him.Because I was already dead.Maybe Luca was meant to go with me. Maybe today was his day too.And then I heard it. The front door unlocking.Bill.He stepped inside, already scowling. The second he saw the smoke, he started shouting. "Rhea! What the hell is this? Can't you see the place looks like a BBQ pit? Are you blind?"He stomped into the kitchen, slapped off the stove, and cranked the exhaust fan.Luca peeked out from behind the couch. The second he spotted Bill, he ran straight into his arms, sobbing hard. And what did Bill do? Did he ask him if he was okay? Nope. He frowned. "Where's your mom? She left you here alone to go grocery shopping, didn't she? Unreal."Then, he whipped out his phone and started firing off
