Chapter 3

Author: Drunken Dumpling
"Vanessa, is that what you want too?"

My eyes landed on the cluster of fresh love bites exposed along Derek's neck as he tilted his chin upward.

The sight scraped across my heart like a thousand tiny needles, leaving behind a slow, lingering ache.

The amethyst pendant had been our token of love.

Seven years ago, we had met at a gemstone exhibition in Silver Ridge because we had both reached for the same piece of amethyst. On the night that we got together, Vanessa had braided the cord herself and tied the pendant around my neck.

We made a promise for a lifetime.

I knew Derek liked it since he had asked Vanessa for it more than once. She had never given it to him.

However, this time, she looked away with hesitation and guilt in her eyes.

"Maybe you could—"

"Sure." I let out a quiet laugh and tore the pendant from my neck, dropping it into Derek's hand.

Watching him eagerly fasten it around his own neck, I nodded in approval. "It suits you."

Vanessa looked at me in surprise. Ignoring her expression, I picked up Sadie and walked away.

Back at the villa, Sadie was still crying so hard she could barely catch her breath.

Ignoring the pain twisting in my chest, I took her little hand in mine. "Sweetheart, if I wanted to take you away from here, would you come with me?"

Her tears fell even harder. "Daddy... can't we stay?"

I swallowed the lump in my throat. "But your mom and your grandmother don't want us here anymore."

I forced myself to meet her eyes.

"Do you really want to spend the rest of your life calling her Aunt Vanessa?"

I selfishly wanted her to be only my daughter who would choose me without hesitation and to love me the way only a child can love a parent.

But life didn't work that way.

She hugged her Barbie doll tighter against her chest. It had been Vanessa's birthday gift to her last year.

"Daddy, I just want one more birthday with Mommy."

She stubbornly refused to change what she called Vanessa.

Closing my eyes, I pulled her into my arms and nodded. "Okay."

...

January 5th was Sadie's birthday.

I'd reminded Vanessa two days in advance so she would have time to prepare. This might be the last birthday our daughter ever celebrated with her mother, and I wanted her wish to come true.

That morning, Sadie woke up early and put on her little dress. Then she looked up at me nervously.

"Daddy, Mommy's coming to my birthday party, right?"

"Of course she is." I forced a smile and sent Vanessa a message.

"It's your daughter's birthday today. Where are you?"

The message disappeared into silence. No reply came.

Sadie lowered her head and tightened her grip on the ribbon wrapped around the cake box. "Mommy isn't coming, is she?"

A long while passed before she seemed to convince herself otherwise.

"It's okay." She forced out a smile. "Aunt Vanessa is busy. We shouldn't bother her. Daddy, let's eat cake."

It was the first time she had called Vanessa "Aunt Vanessa". Little by little, she was beginning to accept the truth—that she simply wasn't important enough to her mother.

But the trembling corners of Sadie's mouth and the redness gathering around her eyes betrayed her heartbreak.

Watching her pretend to be strong felt like someone had poured gasoline over the frustration and grief burning inside my chest. The pain spread through me, scorching everything in its path.

I opened my phone and pulled up Vanessa's chat window.

"You don't even have time for your own daughter's birthday? Do you really love Derek that much? So much that you have to spend every waking moment with him?"

My thumb hovered over the send button. For a long time, I couldn't bring myself to press it.

Then a new message appeared.

"Come to the McBride estate."

Vanessa left that very day. It was as though she had aged ten years overnight.Sadie learned what had happened from me later.I asked her, "Do you blame me for not letting you see her one last time?"Sadie shook her head. That maturity beyond her years surfaced once again. "Aunt Vanessa wasn't someone who could be a mother. So there's nothing to regret."Just as I had once done with Vanessa, I began teaching the women in the village the gemstone business.Over the years, amethyst became known for its quality and honest pricing. Little by little, it earned a reputation people trusted. The next time I heard Vanessa's name was in the news. After returning to the Capital, Vanessa refused to marry Derek, no matter what anyone said. She even fought back with a knife in her desperation to resist. But it changed nothing. In the end, the elders forced the marriage through.Eleanor had always believed she was an excellent judge of character. She never expected to be deceived by someone s

I almost laughed myself breathless. When I finally straightened again, my expression was blank, my eyes cold. "Vanessa, you disgust me."She froze. Disbelief filled her face. "What... did you say?""I said you disgust me, Vanessa."Humiliation flashed across her expression. She took a step toward me, only to be shoved back by the women standing between us."I already apologized! What else do you want from me? You used to..."She didn't finish the sentence. She didn't have to. I knew exactly what she meant.I stepped out from behind the others and slapped her across the face. The look of disbelief returned to her eyes as I let out a cold laugh."What was I like before? Hopelessly in love with you? Willing to forgive anything you did?"You're right. I loved you once. I loved you enough to leave Silver Ridge and follow you to the Capital. I loved you enough to watch you and Derek together and still keep loving you."But Vanessa, no one's love is endless."I tilted my head and l

The moment we heard Vanessa had arrived, the smiles vanished from Sadie's face and mine. With the McBrides' resources, I hadn't expected to stay hidden for long.I straightened my clothes and headed toward the entrance.Long before I arrived, I could already hear the women teasing her."So you're the woman Grant chose? You don't look very useful.""No kidding. You're not tanned, you're not sturdy. Someone like you wouldn't even get a second glance around here.""Look at those soft hands. She probably spent her whole life letting Grant support her. Women are supposed to provide for the family, not spend their days acting delicate."Vanessa's voice cut through the crowd, cold with anger. "A bunch of country bumpkins lecturing me? That's rich. I'm not here to argue with you. Go get Grant."That only made the women laugh harder."Listen to that. The pretty little thing thinks she can't be criticized.""Someone who spends her days drinking coffee and chatting has the nerve to look

Grant's POVMeanwhile, on the flight to Silver Ridge, the passengers around us were buzzing with gossip."They're saying Vanessa McBride ran out on her wedding.""Vanessa McBride? Ran out on her wedding? Wasn't this the wedding she'd always wanted?""I heard she ran because of an ex-boyfriend.""Wasn't Derek Holloway the ex? Everyone knew he was her first love. Didn't she leave for Silver Ridge after he broke her heart all those years ago?""You're behind on the gossip. She had another man in Silver Ridge. Apparently, they even had a daughter together."I almost laughed.Beside me, Sadie pulled off her sleep mask. "Daddy, are they talking about Aunt Vanessa?"I gently pulled the mask back down over her eyes. "You heard wrong. Go back to sleep. I'll be here."Sadie slept all the way until we landed. The moment we stepped into familiar surroundings, her mood visibly lifted. She immediately started walking toward the exit.I quickly caught up to her."Slow down, sweetheart. W

Third-Person POVThe car rolled to a stop in front of the villa.Vanessa stepped out, straightened her clothes, and slipped her usual expressionless mask back into place. She told herself that while she would apologize this time, Grant needed to learn something too. He couldn't keep taking Sadie and leaving every time they argued. She pushed open the door, fully expecting Grant to pull her into his arms the moment he saw her.Instead, the person standing there with his head lowered was Derek. His eyes immediately reddened."Vanessa, where did you go? I was so scared you'd abandoned me..."Vanessa frowned. For the first time, she found Derek unbearably annoying. Impatient, she pushed past him and headed upstairs."Grant..."But Grant wasn't there. Not upstairs or anywhere. More than that, everything connected to him had disappeared from the villa.Half the closet stood empty. The suits that had once filled it were gone. So were the racks of colorful children's clothes. The pl

At the office, Vanessa collapsed onto the couch and absentmindedly scrolled through our old messages.Over the past six months, there had been pitifully few of them. Most were from me asking whether she'd eaten on time or slept well.Every time she had spent the night in Derek's room, I would inevitably go silent the entire following day, as though this was my way of venting my anger. The messages grew fewer and fewer. Until a week ago, when I stopped asking about her life altogether.Vanessa sat up, her brow furrowing.A single screen was enough to hold an entire week's worth of messages. There were only three. The first two had been sent two days earlier, asking whether she would be coming to Sadie's birthday party. She vaguely remembered me mentioning it, but she had forgotten. At the time, she had even assumed Sadie was making a fuss to secure her place in the family.Vanessa felt a flicker of irritation. Hadn't she already said she would apologize? Couldn't they wait for h
