Esther

“I can’t think,” I whisper, my heart rate going up.

“Why is that?”

“I have self-control,” I whisper more to myself than to him. “I won't let it happen.”

“Can’t let what happen?” He asks, his voice still low.

“You know what.”

“Are you sure?” His breath brushes against my cheek. “You look as if your control is...Slipping.”

I try to protest. “It’s not sli...”

Dominic’s lips crush into mine, I wrap my hands around his neck, and he places his hands on my back, on my bare skin between the pants and the crop top. He pulls me close, his grip is tight as if he would pull me closer if he could.

“Wait,” I breathe.

Dominic pauses and slowly pulls away, taking a few but long strides away from me. He stands against the wall on the far end of the room, and quietly looks at me. I take note of the distance between us with dissatisfaction.

This man should be the king of creating awkward silences. His eyes rake my body, but his face reveals nothing.

I look down at my outfit, and I feel my cheeks

EstherI walk to the far end of the room, to an empty table, and I pull a seat, wondering what I’m even doing in this room with a bunch of werewolves. Did I really think they would suddenly accept me? I scan the room and my eyes meet Pretty’s, who shrugs, seemingly also confused. The silence in the room is deafening, as if I’m crashing an exclusive party. Which is almost true, because I’m not part of these species. Dominic mouths something to Pretty, and she giggles. The wolves look at this exchange with beaming faces, their smiles shatter my heart, but this is how it’s supposed to be. He is supposed to be with a werewolf mate, and they should be happy together. At Pretty and Dominic’s table, there is Aiden, Josh, Hilda and a single empty seat. I steal a glance at the table, hoping Aiden would look up, but he keeps his eyes on the plate, as if he is ignoring me on purpose. The room slowly gets filled with whispers and chatter. Everyone speaks about casual stuff like the food and

Esther I put on the ruched satin silk dress with a slit that goes all the way to my upper thigh. Its soft pink colour complements my pale skin, and even I gasp when I look at myself in the mirror. The door instantly opens, and Dominic practically throws himself inside the room. “Haven’t you heard of knocking? What if I was naked?” “There’s nothing I’ve seen before,” he looks me up and down. I watch him, waiting for him to say something. Instead, his gaze lingers on my lips, then he smirks for less than two seconds, it’s almost missable. “Are you okay?” He asks, his face now blank. “You ask as if you care,” I roll my eyes. “I do care. I need you to be extra careful. There was a vampire on these grounds, but they left.” “Do you know who it might be?” My tone comes out as a little hopeful. It was probably my uncle, he might have needed to be nearby to open the blocked communication channel. “No one recognizes his scent. You thought someone was here to break you out? Would you ra

Dominic I am sitting behind my desk and staring at the long email from Oscar, that bastard! His subject line is ‘This is every evidence that shows why Princess Esther is guilty.’ Almost at the same time, another email pops into my inbox, and it’s from the vampires’ council with a request to meet two days from now to discuss a way forward regarding Esther. The thought that she will be leaving me in two days fills me with dread. I glance at the email from Oscar, wondering what kind of madness he wrote, and I make a mental note to call my spies for an update on what the vampires are up to. My gamma knocks before opening the door, and I shut the laptop before looking up. My beta follows a few seconds after. I sigh because I’m tired of feeling like a parent who is always solving my children’s squabbles. If it’s not squabbles between my pack members, it’s between alphas of other packs, and they never bother to solve these problems on their own. Sometimes, this is enough reason for me to

Esther “To protect you.” Aiden covers his mouth with his other hand, his eyes widened. “Shit! Can we forget I told you that piece of information? Dominic is going to kill me.” “No, you know I can’t just let it go. I won’t ask him. Please.” I take his hand in both of my hands, and he looks down at my hands. I slowly let go when I notice the horizontal lines on his forehead. He presses his lips together, motions towards the couch, and I nod to encourage him to sit. I follow him and we sit side by side while I try to ignore the feeling that I offended him. He sighs before placing the paper bag between us and taking out a bag of jelly beans. I take out a packet of chips, and we snack in silence. I steal glances at him, waiting for him to say something. “Dominic is your mate, if he kills you, he dies, if he rejects you, he dies, if you reject him, he dies.” He casually pops a handful of jelly beans in his mouth. “I know,” I roll my eyes with a sigh. Aiden gazes at me, his face blank

Esther ‘Esther,’ the voice says again, with a little more urgency. ‘Uncle, is that you?’ ‘Thank goodness I found you. I can’t speak for long, but we need to talk about your upcoming trial. How are you?’ He asks. ‘How did you...’ ‘I found a witch who helped me open the telepathic channel for a few minutes,' he interjects. 'We don’t have enough time. Did you find out what the wolves want to do?’ ‘I can’t listen in, all the rooms here are soundproof.’ ‘Damnit!’ ‘I really want to leave this place. It doesn’t matter whether I die or I leave, but I would rather stay with Charles than stay here.’ And watch as Pretty acts like he owns Dominic. ‘I know. Is Dominic that bad?’ He asks. ‘No,’ I shake my head as if he can see me. ‘But I would rather be amongst my kind. I can’t trust werewolves and a Lycan.’ ‘Agreed. I will do everything in my power to make that happen, and when it does, you can reject him. You can’t reject him while you are there, they would definitely attack you, yo

Esther “Do you think she heard us?” I whisper, taking my top off and wrapping a towel around myself.“You know it’s soundproof.”“Then hide somewhere,” I place my hand on his back, nudging him in the direction of the walk-in closet. He doesn’t move, instead, he turns around and faces me. “She’s not a vampire, she knows my scent.”“I forgot about that part,” I exhale.“Just don’t open.”“No, what if she gets suspicious? Why are you so relaxed?”The knocks get loud, frantic, and I look around the room, panicking, but Dominic seems unbothered. If she accuses me of having an affair with her fiancé, it would be really over for me, for my family. Charles will feel humiliated, and he’ll get mad. The werewolves, especially Oscar, would also want to make me pay for hurting his sister.“Princess Esther,” Pretty says with a slightly raised voice through the intercom.“Do you think she knows you are in here?” I ask Dominic.“She might,” he shrugs.“Just hide or go, jump out the window or somethi
