Coming out of the funeral home, the afternoon air felt suffocating. I clutched the urn tighter against my chest, feeling the weight of Alexander's remains – the weight of three years of care, of sleepless nights, of promises kept.

A black sedan suddenly screeched to a halt in front of me, tires squealing against the asphalt.
