Xander’s POV

The hall was too loud.

Men were shouting and drinking and dancing on tables with blood still under their nails from a war that had ended.

Noctaryn and Aurion pressed shoulder to shoulder like they had never wanted to kill each other, celebrating as if the cost of this peace could be washed down with wine.

I sat in the chair in the center of it and watched them because that was what a king did. A king watched.

Ashton’s POVI could not get caught. That was the only thought running through me as I dragged myself up on my elbows, the cold burning through my cloak and into my bones until I could not tell where the pain ended and the ice began.I could not get caught. Not like this. I forced my head up and the world tilted. Xander was already in the air, sword in his hand, he was about to land it on Zeth's neck.He was really going to kill the sun king. The sight tore something out of me, and before I knew what I was doing, I screamed.“Xander!” My voice cracked on his name and I tried to stand but my legs gave out and I fell back into the snow, so I lifted my hand instead, reaching for him even though I knew he would not see it.Zeth moved before the blade could hit him. He turned and ducked under it on instinct and his fist drove into Xander’s side with enough force to make the guards behind them flinch, but Xander did not move back.He swung again, and his voice was low and cutting.“I was be

Noctaryn and Aurion pressed shoulder to shoulder like they had never wanted to kill each other, celebrating as if the cost of this peace could be washed down with wine. I sat in the chair in the center of it and watched them because that was what a king did. A king watched. A king remembered who was loyal and who was already forgetting the price that had been paid to put this crown on my head. “Your Majesty,” one of my captains shouted over the music, his face red and bright with drink. “Dance with us. Show them how a king celebrates.” I hesitated because my chest was still tight and Ashton had been gone from my side for too long, and because the way Zeth had looked at me before the toast had left something cold sitting under my ribs. But a king didn’t brood during a feast, so I stood. The moment my feet hit the floor the

Zeth’s POV“Xander,” I said, loud enough to cut through the noise. “It’s time you gave a toast to this victory, don’t you think?”The hall roared. “Toast! Toast! Toast!”I kept my grin in place and my hand on his shoulder, but my eyes were already past him. Ashton was standing by the side door, both hands locked over his stomach. I didn’t move my head. I just let my gaze hit his for half a second. "Go."Xander frowned and tried to look around me. “Later. I need to...”“Now,” I cut in. “They need it now. Before the wine runs out.”He hesitated, then lifted his cup. “To blood spilled and enemies broken,” he said, and his voice filled the hall like it always did. Deep. Certain. “To Noctaryn.”The wolves lost their minds. Cups clashed, loud. Noctaryn warriors hugged Aurion warriors and they cheered each other. Xander dragged a chair to the middle of the room and sat."Tonight we feast... Let's dance."The music was louder now. That was my window.I dropped my hand from his shoulder, clapp

Ashton’s POVI already knew Brenda knew. The moment her eyes dropped to my hands, something in her face settled. Like a door closing. “Excuse me,” I said, and I tried to step around her. Her hand shot out and caught my wrist. Her nails dug in. “Where are you going, Consort?” she asked, voice low and sweet in a way that made my skin crawl. “The celebration isn’t over. The King will want you there.” I pulled against her grip. “Let go of me.” “I don’t think so,” she said, and her smile widened. “You look unwell. Maybe we should get Xander. He should see you like this.” Panic moved through me. I twisted my arm and shoved her back with my shoulder. She stumbled and gasped, but I was already moving past her, both hands locked over my stomach. A few people turned. A few voices hushed, but no one stopped me. Zeth’s eyes followed me all the way to the doors. He didn’t move. He was still holding Xander’s shoulder, that fake grin on his face, and I understood he was giving me tim

  • Omega of Two Packs   Light Under My Skin

Ashton’s POVThe celebration had reached its peak and the hall was drowning in noise.Wine spilled across tables and men were shouting Xander’s name like he was untouchable. Songs clashed with laughter and the air smelled of smoke, sweat, and victory.Xander was drinking cup after cup and he had not looked at me once. Not the way he used to, where one glance said everything he could not say out loud.Zeth was on the other side of the room doing the same thing. He kept his eyes moving over the crowd like he was expecting an attack, and every time my gaze found him he looked away.So I sat alone at a side table with an empty cup in front of me and Brenda’s note burning a hole in my pocket. Watching. Pretending I was not part of any of it.That was when I saw them.Brenda and Lord Merrick were standing in the corner with their heads together. Their cups were full but neither of them was drinking. They were talking too low for anyone else to hear.“Those two are always scheming,” I though

  • Omega of Two Packs   The Cold Knows My Name

Ashton’s POVI stood at the edge of the balcony and watched the north like it would answer me if I stared long enough. The wind was sharp and it cut through my coat, but I didn’t go inside. Because inside was quiet, and quiet made me think, and thinking made me remember. Zeth’s hands on my waist. The way he had hissed my name like it was a secret he wasn’t supposed to keep. The heat of him, even through the fabric, like he could press all of his anger into me and call it something else. I put my hand on my stomach. The bulge was more visible. I tried to pull my mind away from him. I tried to think of Xander instead. Xander who was out there somewhere, in the cold, making choices that would haunt him for the rest of his life. But it wasn’t working. Something about Zeth still caught in my chest and pulled, and that was crazy. That was dangerous. That was treason wrapped in skin. I went inside. The room was too warm. I sat on the bed because I didn’t know what else to do
