Veyra POV

We’re guided back to the cells. As I step into them, I stop when I see the five mats. Five. Today started with five of us. Now, there are only three.

“That was awful, I’ve never been so close to dying,” Riven mumbles, and I turn to face her.

“Are you joking!” My words are harsh, and she stares at me.

“She’s not wrong, Veyra, we were all close to dying.” Sera sits on her mat.

“I don’t mean that, I mean you two running off and leaving Olivia. She died because neither of you would stay and help!” How could they just run away from her like she was nothing?

“What were we supposed to do, risk our own lives for her?” Riven stares at me.

“Yes! You were! As if it were you who was hurt, you would have expected us to! Actually, you expected me to protect you, but you couldn’t even help her to safety?”

Sera sighs. “I saw the silver flakes on it; they were in her bloodstream. She would have died anyway.”

“Yeah, but at least she would have died with some dignity and knowing people cared!

Dagen POVI knew she was up to something, the others thought she was being stubborn, that she was exercising her right to tell us to get fucked, without saying it. Not eating, they thought was her fighting back, but I knew it wasn’t, which is why I stayed up.And here, I am. Pinning her against the wall after I caught her on camera sharing food when she was warned not to! She’s smirking like she’s winning, when she’s actually losing. She needs to stop helping others, as they make her weak. She leans closer and spits the chewed-up food into my face.“Then I don’t eat it, I won’t swallow one more bite of your food,” she snarls toward me.Her words hang in the air between us, it’s like a blade, sharp and final. She stands there, defiant but trembling, her chest rising and falling fast as she stares at me. No, she stares me down like I’m nothing more than another threat that she is intent on killing and destroying.I should hit her, that’s what everyone expects me to do. Hell, I know she

  • Omega's Reckoning The Trials   Food

Veyra POVDagon storms away, but he didn’t take the plate of food. I guess that’s a win for me.Walking back to the mats, Riven and Sera are staring at me. “Do you want to die?” Sera asks quietly.“No, but I also won’t be told what to do.” I pick up the plate and hand them food again. Sitting, we eat quietly, but we don’t speak. I can see them, they are trying to hide that they are eating. If Dagen didn’t want me to feed them, he should have taken the food with him. When we finished eating, we lay down.I watch Riven and Sera fall asleep, but I can’t sleep now. I shouldn’t have slept today. Instead, I begin to pace the small cell and when that doesn’t help. I begin to exercise. What else do I have to do? Exercising is a bonus right now because I need to keep my strength up. I do anything I can within my limited space—press-ups, sit-ups, and every type of exercise there is. When my arms are dead, I begin with squats.Eventually, I become too tired to stand, fall onto the mat, and pass

  • Omega's Reckoning The Trials   Orders

Veyra POV“Right, up.” More guards come, and I sigh. Another trial already? It’s either that or we are all being punished for my behaviour. I hope not, though. We’re guided out and into a large room, the walls of which are stone and bare. We walk in and are pushed towards the other Omegas. There must be at least sixty others here, maybe more. Just looking around, I can tell who has a place in the main dorms and who are like us, in cells and such.Standing at the front, I wait. Riven and Sera push closer to me, and I now notice the Alphas seated close by as well. So is this going to be a public display of beating me for not following orders? I feel like it is.“Today’s trial begins now. You will be in groups of three. Only one person can win in the groups of three.”One? Riven and Sera sob behind me. So I can’t save them?“Today’s trial, you will stand between the Alphas. They will give you commands. If you refuse to do them, you will be punished. If you refuse to submit and follow ord

  • Omega's Reckoning The Trials   Pushing Them

Maddox POVWatching Dagen punish Veyra is hard. She deserves it for refusing to follow orders, but that’s not what makes it hard. I’m not sure if Vane and Rael have realised, but the way Dagen is acting isn’t him. He’s trying to prove a point, maybe that he doesn’t care for her? After his wolf failed to kill her and then defended her against the cats, everyone watched him closely. We agreed last night to feed her, but Dagen made us aware that she had tried sharing it with her cell mates. She was willing to take the punishment this morning for sharing it.What she wasn’t willing to do, however, was let them be punished for her behaviour. So, I have a plan to destroy her little team. When Dagen steps back, I look at Riven. I want to do something extreme, something that pushes her and makes her turn on Veyra. The fact that Veyra took her punishment means Riven and Sera will see her as a way out.“On your knees, here.” I point down and she follows the orders. I don’t say anything, I just

  • Omega's Reckoning The Trials   Taking Their Punishments.

Vane POVI watch Veyra, I think we’re all a little drawn in by her. We are eager to see how well she does without carrying others who wouldn’t help her. Which is proven right now.For a moment, Veyra says nothing, then she nods, accepting the punishment that should be Riven’s is not hers.See, now I don’t want to give it to her. Sure, it’s the rules, and I have to, but it feels wrong. Stepping toward her, she keeps her chin raised, and my head shakes. “Had you not made an alliance with these people, you would be far stronger right now.”The blade cuts across her arm, and she hisses but doesn’t make any other sound. Sitting back down, I look to Rael. He rubs his hand across his jaw, his expression is unreadable as his gaze settles on Sera.He doesn’t speak right away; instead, he watches her. His silence is far more suffocating than any command that could be given. Sera is already trembling. Her hands are clenched at her sides; it’s like she’s holding herself together by sheer will alo

  • Omega's Reckoning The Trials   Their Betrayal

Dagen POVI admire Veyra. She doesn’t like the idea of others getting hurt or being punished. She wants to help her two little friends, but they aren’t.Right now, I think she realises that. I think she’s noticed how she is just a shield for them; if they can put her in front of them for every task, they will.Tomorrow, I will have her fight one of them, or maybe both? You see, they think giving her their punishment is better than the shame they would feel by doing what they are ordered. It’s not, why would I want to claim and use one of them? They are weak. They can’t even carry their own punishments. Had they been more like Veyra and fought for their chance to survive, fine, but they aren’t.They are merely leeches, sucking Veyra dry at every opportunity they have. She gave them her food, and they can’t even carry the weight of their own orders, or their own punishments. This is why this trial is here. An alpha wouldn’t do this. They would fight to live, and they would play the game

  • Omega's Reckoning The Trials   Her Fighting Back

Rael POVI lean forward, keeping my elbows on my knees and just watch. I’m more interested now, this wasn’t how today’s trial was meant to go, but I’m not about to complain. Dagen’s sudden twist adds exactly the sort of tension we need.Fear.Betrayal.Blood.And it is all neatly wrapped up in one moment. Tomorrow's group combat trial is going to be good, but this? This is the kind of preview that makes it better.Sera hesitates, and I can see the panic. She’s trembling, her eyes dart to Dagen as if she is waiting for him to say it’s a joke. He won’t, and she knows it. That’s why she charges. Her scream is shrill and too high-pitched to be convincing. It wouldn’t even scare a cub with her battle cry, and it doesn’t even get a reaction from Veyra.I’m glad, it shouldn’t, not when she’s already bloodied and humiliated and hasn’t dropped from our crap.At first, Veyra doesn’t move. I can see it, the calculating, Sera stumbles forward with the grace of a newborn pup. The moment Sera gets

  • Omega's Reckoning The Trials   Fierce

Rael POVHer back is a mess. It’s covered in lashes and bruising. The blood is dried thick, especially where the whip had split her skin. The silver has left burns that will ache for days. So the ointment is needed as it will heal her quicker. She’s too proud to admit there’s pain. Even now, pressed against the cold wall, she’s hissing through her teeth like she’s not willing to show weakness. She doesn’t scream, she just trembles, staying silent, stubborn and likely seething.I press the ointment deeper into the worst areas across her lower back, and her muscles tighten under my touch. The scent of her hits me again, it’s raw and a mixture of sweat, blood, and something else. It’s that same pull I felt in the arena that coils tight in my gut.I shouldn’t be this close to her, but I don’t stop either. Her body is warm against mine, tense but alive beneath my grip. I don’t even realise what’s happening. I’m so focused on the feel of her that I don’t notice until I’m too far gone. My he

Veyra POVSomething shifts in him.The careful movements give way to something deeper, firmer. Each thrust grows more deliberate, more insistent, like instinct is pulling him out of the restraint he's clung to. I feel it in the tension of his muscles, in the way his fingers press harder against my hips, holding me in place like he’s afraid I’ll vanish.I know I should be afraid. I know what rogues are... what they become when instinct takes over, but I don’t pull away.Instead, I arch into him.My breath comes faster, not from panic but from need, sharp and staggering. The pain that once consumed me has been replaced with something I didn’t expect. Pleasure. Rich and overwhelming, like it’s blooming through every nerve ending. My wolf leans into his without hesitation, drawn to the strength he’s offering, to the rare and careful way he’s giving it.He groans low in his chest as he sinks deeper, filling me completely with each thrust. The rhythm isn’t brutal, he never becomes careless,

  • Omega's Reckoning The Trials   Taking What's Needed

Veyra POVHe doesn’t move like I expect him to.There’s no wild snarl, no rip of fabric, no hands dragging me down into the dirt. Just a pause. A slow exhale. One of his hands brushes against my waist, then stills as if he’s giving me a chance to change my mind. When I don’t, his fingers drift toward the hem of my shirt, curling beneath it with deliberate care. The fabric is stiff with dried sweat and blood. It clings to me in places, but he’s patient, peeling it upward, inch by inch, until my stomach is bare. My skin prickles under the touch of air, but it’s his silence that unsettles me more. He’s not grinning or gloating. He’s looking at me like I’m something fragile. Something breakable. My voice is rough, wary. “You’re not doing this like a rogue.”He doesn’t answer. Just eases the shirt higher, over my ribs, past my bruised arms. I wince when he lifts it off my head, and his touch softens instantly, like he noticed. Like he cared. He folds the ruined shirt and sets it aside, as

  • Omega's Reckoning The Trials   Too Weakened

Veyra POVI crawl to the pile of items and grab the meat, shoving it into my mouth without caring how it tastes. It won't save me. Even I know that. I thought I was ready to die, but now that it's closer, I'm not. It's not the pain, not the burning heat under my skin, not the way my body refuses to move. It's the thought of dying that scares me. I was ready. Now, I want to live. But living means asking one of the Alphas to knot me.My pride won't let me. But maybe... if one of them offers again, if they suggest it, if they give me even a fraction of an excuse... maybe then I can say yes. I can take what I need and go back to surviving this trial on my own terms.I can't move. My body's done. My wolf is slipping further away, curling back into herself, and the last of my strength is gone. I know I'm exposed. I'm lying out in the open. Anyone can see me. The scent of the other Omega's body is going to draw the rogues soon, maybe even a boar or another predator. Still, I can't do anythin

  • Omega's Reckoning The Trials   Falling

Veyra POVMy whole body aches. The connection to my wolf is thinning, and I know it’s because I keep refusing to mate. That, and the rejection is ripping us apart. I’ve accepted I’m dying. I’d rather go because of that than be killed by the Omegas or the trials.Call it stubbornness, I know it is, but I want to die my way. I’m not giving them the satisfaction of winning.Only that’s not looking likely now. The other women were laughing, mocking me as they walked off. I didn’t see it coming. One second I was alone, the next I was tackled and thrown into the pit. I can’t stay here, but every part of me hurts. If I bring my wolf forward, shifting will kill me. The strain will finish what the bond started. I have to get out on my own. I need to figure it out. Standing, my body sways and pain rips through me. The mark on my neck burns like fire. My wolf probably won’t help even if I asked. My choices are killing us, I know that.I push against the wall. It’s just mud. That’s going to make

  • Omega's Reckoning The Trials   Her Fall

Dagen POVWe stay silent as the cameras follow her. Veyra moves carefully, not with the desperation the others show, but with a slow, calculated pace. She stops suddenly near a patch of dense undergrowth, crouching low.The camera zooms in automatically, and we see it. A boar, rooting around a fallen log, oblivious to the danger creeping closer.“She’s hunting?” Rael mutters, disbelief threading his voice.“She doesn’t have a choice," Vane says quietly. "If she wants to survive, she has to eat."We watch as Veyra moves closer, almost invisible against the thick shadows of the trees. Her wolf is close to the surface, not fully shifting, but enough that her movements are sharper, faster. When she strikes, it is fast and brutal. One sharp thrust with the sharpened branch she carries, straight into the boar’s neck.It thrashes once, twice, then goes still. She wastes no time. Dragging the body back toward a cave, she cuts it open with quick, brutal efficiency, taking thin slices of meat.

  • Omega's Reckoning The Trials   Their Plan

Dagen POVNothing much happened throughout the night. It was relatively quiet for Veyra anyway; three other Omegas are dead, two of them to the rogues and one of them to a trap. The others have gone to sleep but I've been watching all night. I don't want to care about her, I don't want to care if she lives or not, but I do. So the moment I laid down and tried to rest, my wolf didn't settle, so instead, I sat here all night and watched her fall apart piece by piece because of the bonds, rejection, everything. The sound of the door has me look up, and I see the maid carrying in the tray. She places it down before walking out. I'm not sure if I'm even hungry, what I do know is my wolf is unsettled. Maddox claiming she has made my wolf eager to be next, despite the fact it's not right. I pick at the food for what feels like forever before the others walk in and sit down. "Anything fun?" Rael looks to me and waits. "No, it was an uneventful night." My shoulders shrug slightly. "I won

Vane POVThe hours pass slow and heavy. None of us speak much after that. The screens glow in front of us, the only light in the darkened observation room. I try to keep my gaze moving between the different Omegas, watching them stumble through the forest, some trying to build shelters, others just curling up under trees and hoping the night spares them. But no matter how much I try to spread my focus, my eyes keep dragging back to her.Veyra.She’s still tucked into the little shelter she built, her body hidden behind the thick wall of branches and thorns she dragged into place. She’s smarter than the others. She chose a place off the main paths, dug in tight against the trees, hidden and protected by the thorns she wove around her. She’s been still for hours now, only moving when she adjusts the branches or shifts slightly to ease the stiffness in her body. I know she’s awake though. There’s a tension in her even when she lies still. A readiness.Dagen tenses suddenly beside me. His

We all can.“She won’t make it,” Maddox mutters, but even he sounds like he doesn’t believe it anymore.Maybe she won’t. Maybe the Heat and the bond and the fucking rejection will tear her apart before the night is over. But looking at her on the screen, seeing the way she still moves even when every step looks like it shreds her open, I know the truth. She’s not giving up. Not even close.I shift in my chair, my jaw tight. The bond inside me pulls again, sharp and constant. It’s worse now, seeing her like this. It’s like a thread buried under my skin, tugging harder every second she keeps breathing.“If she does make it,
