Chapter Fifty-six

Thalina

My body, which had felt so heavy, like a weight I could never lift, now felt light and warm, every ache replaced by a lingering heat. Except for the faint, delicious soreness between my thighs, a reminder of him, of us, each time the cool air of the room kissed my skin.

My cheeks flushed as flashes of last night played in my mind. My heartbeat quickened, the thrum of excitement coursing through me. He called me his mate. He called me his. And he claimed me.

A quiet squeal almost escaped my lips, but I froze when my eyes shifted to the side of the bed. There he was, still sleeping. His chest rose and fell steadily, his features softened by sleep. He looked peaceful, breathtakingly gorgeous, and I couldn’t tear my gaze away.

Last night had been unlike anything I’d ever experienced. Was it just the thrill of Professor Maverick calling me his mate? Or the way he claimed me, slow and steady?

Chapter Sixty Talon Maverick It had been days, but the memory still remained, clear as day, as though it were etched into my mind. The betrayal was still fresh, like an open wound which would take forever to heal. I kept asking myself the same questions over and over again. Why do I feel this way? Why does it feel like my heart is being ripped apart, piece by piece? Why do I feel betrayed when I had believed whatever I had with her was for fun and pleasure? The moment I saw her walking in with that unfamiliar guy, something inside me tore apart, something I didn’t know existed. I waited for her. I sent her multiple texts—dozens—but not a single response. And when she finally came out, she wasn’t alone. She was with him. What was she trying to prove? Was this her way of showing me that I didn’t matter? How could she do this to me? I knew I shouldn’t feel like this. I knew a woman shouldn’t have this kind of power over me. They were supposed to be nothing more than instrum

Chapter Fifty-nine Thalina This couldn’t be. No, it shouldn’t be. I shook my head and pinched myself, trying hard to shake off this imagination—or nightmare, whatever it was—but the reality stared back at me, unyielding. Fenris was Selene’s brother. What the hell! I had sworn never to associate with Fenris again, not after what he did to me. Yet, all this time, I’d been close to his sister, sharing nearly everything with her. Thank goodness I hadn’t told her about Professor Maverick. That would have been the biggest mistake of my life. Fenris’s eyes stayed locked on mine, his gaze unsettling, as though he were seeing me for the first time. His lips parted, like he wanted to say something, but he clamped them shut almost immediately, leaving me confused. Was this a coincidence, or had it been planned? Could Selene be someone other than who I thought she was? Had she been planted in my life to spy on me? The thought gnawed at me, and I couldn’t ignore it. After all, I co

Chapter Fifty-eight Thalina The harder I tried to hold back my tears, the more relentlessly they flowed. I couldn’t believe he’d done this to me—after everything we’d shared. Did none of it mean anything to him? Did I mean nothing to him? Had nothing changed since the day we first met? Was this still just a casual fling to him? And why… why did it hurt this much? Why did it feel like my heart was splintering into shards, breaking in places I didn’t even know existed? This morning, I thought, would be the start of something new for us. I thought it would mark a deeper bond, a turning point in whatever this relationship was supposed to be. But he ruined everything, reduced it all to nothing. And if it was all truly nothing to him—then what about yesterday? What about the way he called me his mate? The way he claimed me like he never had before? And this mark on my neck? My hand brushed against the raised skin of the mark, and a fresh wave of tears fell. Did this mean nothing

Chapter Fifty-seven Talon Maverick My heart twisted in my chest as I drove to the castle, the only thought in my mind being Kaed. Vaelora had woken me early that morning with the news—Kaed was awake. I hadn’t wasted a second. I needed to see him. The last few hours had shown me just how much he meant to me. The thought of losing him, of a world without his steady presence, had shaken me to my core. He wasn’t just my brother; he was my anchor. Just like Mother, Vaelora, and… Thalina. Thalina. The memory of last night settled over me like a soothing balm. For the first time in what felt like forever, I had slept soundly. No tossing, no turning, no waking in a cold sweat from the nightmares that had plagued me for so long. I didn’t know how she’d done it, but with her, I had found peace. It was warm. It was calm. It was everything I’d ever wished for. As much as I couldn’t vividly remember what happened last night, I could still remember that feeling, the

Chapter Fifty-five Thalina He rolled off me, leaving my body trembling from the aftermath of his magical fingers. Every nerve in my body still buzzed with the lingering intensity of his fingers driving me to places I’d only dreamed of. My breaths came in short, shallow bursts as I watched him move with precision, unable to tear my gaze away. Professor Maverick’s eyes stayed locked on mine, dark and hungry, like a predator sizing up its prey, waiting to devour it. Slowly, he moved to the edge of the bed and unbuttoned his shirt. Each movement sent a spark through me , his fingers working the buttons free one by one. When he finally pulled the fabric from his shoulders and let it fall to the floor, the hard, chiseled lines of his chest left me breathless. My nipples hardened as if called to him, and a soft whimper escaped my lips at the thought of his chest pressing against mine. God, I wanted him—all of him. I’d always wanted him, but tonight was different. The h
