Chapter 1

Author: Perfect Timing
I threw the wedding invitations that had Victoria Cademere's name printed on them into the trash before heading to my usual salon.

The hairstylist hesitated as she held the scissors, repeatedly asking me if I was sure that I wanted to cut my hair short.

It had taken me four years to grow my hair out until the tips reached my waist. I only did so because Travis Somerson had once promised to marry me when my hair reached my waist.

My hair had finally reached my waist.

Travis had also stuck to his word and was about to marry me.

However, I didn't want to keep my long hair anymore.

I was just about to nod and give the hairstylist the green light when my phone started ringing.

Travis was video-calling me.

His voice echoed from the receiver the moment the call connected. "Where are you?"

I didn't answer him.

Meanwhile, Travis could see the hairstylist standing behind me, as well as the pair of scissors she was holding. He frowned and asked, "You're cutting your hair?"

I nodded.

Travis suddenly burst into laughter as if I had just told him a hilarious joke.

"You look awful with short hair. It took so long for you to grow your hair out. What's gotten into you? Why do you want to cut it short?"

A few years ago, when I was growing my hair out, Travis constantly mocked me by saying that I wasn't feminine at all.

I would argue with him every single time, trying to convince him that a woman's femininity wasn't tied to the length of her hair.

However, at that moment, I didn't make a single retort. I simply nodded at the hairstylist and said, "Do it."

Travis finally realized that I was serious as he watched the hairstylist move the scissors closer to my hair. His smile faded away.

"Do you have to throw a tantrum and cut your hair just because Victoria accidentally typed her own name instead of yours on the wedding invitations, Harper Ellis? Do you have some loose screws in your head?"

Travis realized that his words were rather harsh when I remained silent. He softened his tone and suppressed his frustration before continuing, "You grew your hair out for so many years just for the wedding that's happening next month, Harper. Don't cut it, okay?"

I didn't say a word.

"I'm coming to pick you up. I made a reservation at a restaurant with delicious dishes. It just opened recently."

Travis always behaved that way. He would take me to a newly opened restaurant every time after he took his frustration out on me.

As a result, it had become a routine between us for the last few years.

It didn't take long for Travis to show up outside the salon. A smile stretched across his lips when he noticed that I hadn't cut my hair.

I started sneezing the moment I slipped into his car. My senses had been immediately assaulted by an overpowering perfume.

My nose was sensitive to smells, so I never used any perfume.

Travis also never used any air fresheners in his car.

The scent of the perfume was quite unique and sensual.

"Who sat in the front passenger's seat today?" I asked.

Travis' lips immediately curved down into a scowl.

I had no choice but to remind Travis that we had already broken up."It's over between us, Travis," I said. "Stop interfering with my life. You can stop causing a fuss now, okay?"Travis tried to hug me, but I quickly stepped aside, dodging it. Unfortunately, he still had a death grip on my wrist."Let go of me, Travis!" I shouted. My wrist was starting to ache from how much force he was exerting. In a fit of rage, I raised my other hand and delivered a hard slap across his face."Let go, Travis! Travis stared at me in disbelief, as though his ears were playing tricks on him."Are you sure, Harper?" he asked."Yes," I replied. His voice was still colored with disbelief when he asked, "Are you sure you don't want to marry me?""I'm sure."The impatience in my voice sent Travis into a fit of rage.A vein pulsed in his forehead as he pointed an accusing finger at me. "Weren't you the one who was desperate to marry me, Harper? You even told me that your mother's dying wish was for you to marry me. What are you playing at this time?"It really seems that the older you get, the more cunning you become. How did I never notice how scheming you are?"Travis finally realized that I wasn't joking when he saw me carrying my belongings out of the room.Unfortunately for him, he had misremembered Mom's dying wish. Travis seemed surprised by my lack of enthusiasm. He took my hand and led me toward the jewelry sets, helping me try them on, one after the other. His eyes lit up when I tried on the fourth set of jewelry. "This set looks good on you! It totally matches your style."Brandon chuckled and said, "You sure are a big fan of ruby necklaces. You had the same awed look on your face when Victoria tried on a ruby necklace too."The air turned awkward the moment the words left his lips.I took the necklace off and carefully placed it back in the display case."I need to talk to you in private, Travis," I said before turning around and heading back to my room.Travis trailed after me as he rushed to explain himself. "Let me explain, Harper. Victoria mentioned wanting to buy some jewelry for herself and asked me to recommend a store to her. That's why I told her about Brandon's store."Coincidentally, I was also there when she decided to drop by. We just happened to run into each other becau
