Chapter 3

Author: Codfish
The research institute's car was due to arrive that evening.

That morning, I returned to school to collect my graduation documents.

As I was about to leave, several girls stopped me at the entrance.

"You're Audrey, right? Principal Bennett's precious daughter?"

The moment one of them spoke, the other two burst out laughing.

"What precious daughter? I heard Audrey got kicked out of her own home and is about to be sent off to some remote place in the mountains!"

I recognized the girl who had spoken first. She was Vera's closest friend at school.

She stared at me for a moment before suddenly grabbing my wrist and ripping off my bracelet.

"I heard this is your most treasured bracelet."

Dad had given it to me when I was fifteen. It was also the only gift he had given me in the five years since Vera came to live with us. I wore it every day.

"Give it back."

I tried to snatch it back, but the other two girls blocked my way.

The girl shot me a malicious look. Her voice was sharp and shrill.

"Who are you trying to impress with that attitude? Do you think being a Bennett and growing up with Liam means you can do whatever you want at school?"

"Everyone knows the principal kicked you out of his house. How pathetic! Your family and your childhood sweetheart don't care about you. They chose Vera!"

The three girls burst into laughter. Students who passed by turned to look at us curiously.

I spotted Liam beneath a tree in the distance. He looked in our direction, and Vera stood beside him.

The girls were speaking loudly enough for everyone nearby to hear. I knew Liam must have heard every insult they hurled at me.

Yet he did not come over. He could not even bring himself to say a single word in my defense.

Instead, Vera walked over to us on her own.

"Alisa, don't say that. Audrey must be really upset."

She spoke softly, as if she genuinely cared about my feelings.

If I had not seen the mockery in her eyes, I might have believed she was the kind and gentle girl everyone else thought she was.

"Come on, give Audrey's bracelet back."

She took the bracelet from Alisa and held it out to me.

I eyed her suspiciously and reached for it.

But just as I was about to take it, she suddenly pulled her hand away.

The thin silver bracelet snapped under the sudden strain and fell to the ground.

My face instantly changed. I hurriedly crouched down to pick it up.

Vera covered her mouth and gasped. Then, she backed away in alarm.

"Oh my God, Audrey! How could you do that? I was only trying to return your bracelet!"

Only then did Liam finally approach us.

He stepped in front of Vera and glared at me with disapproval.

"What in the world are you doing? Vera was only trying to help you, and you had to take your anger out on her? You even ruined your own bracelet just to get back at her?"

"Why do you always have to pick on her?"

I could hear the whispers around me, but I could not be bothered to explain myself.

Just like everyone else, Liam had already decided that Vera was the innocent one and I was the villain who always caused trouble.

But I no longer cared.

In just a few hours, I would leave that place and cut off all contact with them for good.

Liam's expression grew impatient.

"Vera's party is tonight. You'd better stop causing trouble."

I clenched the broken bracelet in my hand and walked away without looking back.

By 5 p.m., I had packed all my belongings. I was ready to leave my home of eighteen years.

Just as I was about to shut down my computer, someone suddenly barged into my room.

I turned around to find Liam storming toward me.

"Give Vera her necklace back!"

"What?"

Before I could even process what he had said, my parents and Ethan entered my room behind him.

Vera stood among them with a pitiful expression on her face.

"Vera's necklace went missing after she spoke to you this morning. You must have stolen it! Hand it over right now!"

I forced myself to stay calm as I looked at their hostile faces.

"I haven't done anything. What gives you the right to accuse me of stealing?"

"You refused to give Vera the necklace before. You must have taken it on purpose this time!" Ethan said firmly."

"Stop wasting time with her. The party is about to start."

At Liam's words, they began searching every corner of my bedroom.

Dad spotted the suitcase beside my bed and paused. His voice turned cold.

"What's this supposed to mean? Are you trying to threaten us by running away from home?"

Vera was about to pick up the report, but Liam got to it first."What's this?" My parents hurried over to look. The moment they read the report, their faces changed. It was a rescue report from five years ago. The names of the deceased were Vera's parents. But the contents of the report shocked them even more."…When the rescue team arrived, the victims showed no signs of life…"Vera's parents had already died by the time the rescuers reached the scene. They could not have given up their chance to survive for my parents' sake.Yet for the past five years, our entire family had believed that Vera's parents had sacrificed their lives to save mine. We thought their sacrifice was the reason my parents had survived and our family remained whole.Mom stared at Vera in disbelief.Five years ago, when Vera was thirteen, she had come to our door in tears and told us that her parents had sacrificed themselves. My

Vera held her phone out for everyone to see.The screen showed a new post from the Williams Research Institute. In one corner of the photo was the side profile of a girl. Anyone who knew me would recognize me at once."See? I told you her running away was just an act. Audrey was only throwing a tantrum. She went to the school ahead of time, that's all."She acted as if she were defending the others, but every word she said was an attack on me."How could she do this? She deliberately played this cruel joke on you and made you worry about her all night. I'm sure she'll be back soon!""That's enough, Vera."Ethan pushed her phone aside."It's not fake. We went to the school and asked them ourselves. Audrey agreed to cut ties with us. She isn't going to Williams College. She's going to the Williams Research Institute.""She isn't coming back.""What?!" Vera was stunned. For a moment, she almost lost the composure she had maintained for years."What right does she have to get i

The next day, Liam and the others drove for more than three hours before they reached a small town in the mountains. They found an administrative staff member at Williams College and asked to see me.She greeted them with a smile at first. But when Liam mentioned my name, she stopped searching through the records.I was the only student this year who had received special admission to the research institute's classified program. Of course, she knew who I was."May I ask who you are?""I'm Audrey's mother. We heard she arrived at the school early, so we came to take her home."The staff member eyed them warily. "You claim to be a student's family. Do you have any proof?"Liam handed her the document I had left behind. "She left this at home before she came here. It even has her signature."The staff member checked the document but still refused to reveal anything about me."Audrey Bennett is a specially selected student at our school. I'm afraid we can't disclose any information

Vera had invited many of her classmates and friends to her party. The two-hour party was lively, but Liam could not shake the feeling that something was wrong. He checked his phone over and over, but I never messaged him.I had stayed away from Vera's party, just as they wanted. I had not cried or made a scene, yet he still felt that something was off.As the party drew to a close, he could not resist sending me another message.[Audrey? Why aren't you replying?]The moment he sent it, a notification appeared in the chat.[You are no longer this person's contact.]He stared at the notification in disbelief. He could hardly believe his eyes.He could not wait for the party to end. He rushed upstairs without a second thought. Vera called after him several times, but he did not stop."Audrey!" He pounded on my bedroom door."What in the world are you doing? Are you really blocking me over something so trivial?"The room was dead silent. There was no response from inside. He f

Mom blamed me too. "Audrey, what has gotten into you? Do you really have to make everything about yourself on such an important day for Vera?"Just then, I saw Vera slip something into my cabinet. Then, she shouted, "Oh my God! Here it is!"She acted surprised and held up the necklace with my portrait on it. Tears filled her eyes as she looked at me."Audrey, if you didn't want me to have the necklace, you could have just said so. Why pretend to give it to me willingly, only to steal it back later?"I was about to expose her lies when Ethan let out a cold laugh."Looks like stealing the necklace wasn't enough for her."He pointed at my computer screen, where I had saved the birthday videos I had copied earlier."I gave you that hard drive so you could edit the videos for Vera's party. What are these videos doing here? Were you planning to play your own birthday videos at her party?""I didn't plan to do that," I protested. But Liam cut me off. He looked at me with disappointm
